About the Owner

Aloha! I'm Lisa. I'm Hawaii born and raised, Honolulu and Hilo, and haved lived here on this property for thirty years, raising four children with my husband, Christian. I love to share my culture, our Islands' stories and history with all. Cherish my morning coffee, appreciate interesting and considerate people, like a few dogs at my feet, gardening and yard work, and getting in the ocean every week!

Guestbook comments from the owner

From the moment we walked through the door, I felt all the tension just slide from my shoulders. We were surrounded by beauty, both inside and out. Our host, Lisa, thought of everything we could possibly have wanted: the freshest fruit, right from the garden/trees, books about the island, even Hawaiian music CDs...and the best coffee EVER. She is a wonderful resource about the property and the history of the island.

The house has lots of art and is tastefully appointed, but still feels like a place where you can relax. The animals are part of the welcome committee.

Lisa, mahalo for a wonderful visit. Aloha to you and Christian and Mariella, Hobbs, Maca and co. See you next year!

A little gem!

  • 5 of 5
What a superb house! If you decide to stay you will not regret it. The house has such a lovely relaxed and peaceful holiday feel. Close to the beach, shops and the fantastic little village, Holualoa. There is a really nice little restaurant there that Lisa recommended. The family went there several times and we where never disappointed.

Lisa was very happy to help me organise and recommend several restaurant, helicopter flights, beaches and day trips. She helped make our trip so very memorable.

The three bedrooms with bathrooms are beautifully decorated and appointed. Two of them have fantastic views of the ocean and the Kona coast. The third has a beautiful view of the garden. The fourth (my bedroom) was a bit stuffy at night as you could not open the french doors as there where no fly screens. I ended up sleeping in the window seat in the Kitchen rather than the 4th bedroom. I did not mind as I got to enjoy the day dawn. The view was fabulous any time of the day. I also had someone bring me a cuppa tea in bed every morning.

The kitchen is amazing, the pictures that line the walls are fantastic, the garden is beautiful and the view is superb.

I take away many fond family memories eating, drinking and playing in and around the house. It was a great location for a family reunion.

During our stay we did not turn on the TV once. There is just so much to do, see and experience. The best experience was the many nights we sat on the lanai watching the sun set with a glass of bubbles and chatting with family.

I would love to visit again!

Everything we were looking for ...

We had an excellent stay at Hale Akala. The house and grounds are beautiful, inviting, and relaxing. The owner Lisa is very friendly and knowledgeable about local activities, beaches, shops, restaurants, etc. She even took my wife standup paddleboarding! We did a lot during our trip but sometimes the simple things stick with you: sitting on the lanai in the cool morning air, sipping freshly brewed Kona coffee while taking in the expansive view -- a perfect start to another great day in Hawaii.

A very special slice of Hawaii

  • 5 of 5
We highly recommend this home. It's hard to express how welcome and comfortable Lisa made us feel throughout our stay at Hale Akala. The vibe of this home made it possible for us to relax and be "in the moment" as we scurried around preparing for our son's wedding in Kona. We were able to relax and actually enjoy the wedding preparations in a peaceful, beautiful environment that contributed to almost stressless preparation because it was so well-furnished and equipped.

The ten-acre setting couldn't be more beautiful. Lisa has cultivated a vast array of tropical flora & fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple - which she invited us to pick as we liked. We felt as though we were living in a gorgeous botanical garden, far from the madding crowd.

Clearly this is a home not just a rental house. It reflects Lisa's thoughtful knack for creating the perfect blend of comfort and beauty. The home is brimming with anything one could need for daily living plus many special extras - a glorious collection of art, music and books, a rockin' sound system, comfy window seats for dreaming, reading and relaxing, plus stunning ocean vistas from the lanai. We were six adult family members and everyone had plenty of space for alone time. From the enthusiastic welcome of the friendly dogs, to the horses and cows in the back pasture, to the mysterious comings and goings of Hobbes the cat, we experienced a lived-in Hawaii which could never be matched by a luxury hotel or villa. We felt completely transported to a Hawaiian paradise. (If you have a phobia of animals or allergies, this may not be the place for you.)

A small suggestion we made to Lisa was to have a clearer sign at the entrance - it was difficult to find even with our GPS. The elevation is about 1200 ft & driveway is very steep and hard to see. We drove by twice, in full daylight and just couldn't see the driveway!

The location was perfect for us - we weren't looking for lively night life or a house on the beach. However, the beaches are closeby and Lisa has all the equipment for snorkeling, boogie boards, etc. We went snorkeling one day and appreciated not having to rent equipment. You are walking distance to the charming artist's village of Holualoa with its lovely, eclectic galleries and cafes. The drive into Kona to Safeway for groceries, farmer's market and the like is about a 15 min. ride on scenic winding roads. Ditto for restaurants.

Owner's Response: I aim to please and am happy when a guest finds the home as enveloping and welcoming as I envision. The driveway approach can intimidate but boldness is encouraged. Once one finds their way, they know it for the rest of the stay. The driveway markers have been improved with street numbers made to be more visible. Thank you, Mary Beth!

Stunning Views From Beautiful Property

  • 5 of 5
This ranch house was very nicely decorated, clean, and very comfortable. Window seats throughout the home and large porches for reading or just relaxing provided exceptional ocean and/or garden views. The owner, who lives on the property, was very friendly and provided us with some island history and very helpful suggestions for dining out.

Great Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5
The house was wonderful and so comfortable. Our host was very helpful and thought of every detail. Everyone had there space and enjoyed all the cool spots in and outside the house. We had great fun picking and eating the fruit on the property. We drove all over the island and had great adventures, and were happy to get back to the house and watch the sunset and enjoy dinner. I will be back soon

Owner's Response: The property itself is a wonderful experience, picking the fruit in season, digging kitchen scraps into the compost pile in the garden, picking flowers or just peeking in on all the little corners of the yard while the birds chirp overhead or the social cat follows you about. The home and the yard will delight! Thank you Yoko.

Location

From the Owner

Hale Akala is a special piece of Kona. Built in 1895 by Manuel Silveira Goularte, a Portuguese immigrant who raised his thirteen children here. It was utilized by cowboys of the neighboring Greenwell family's Palani Ranch, to re-supply and breakfast in the 1920 and 30s. It was abandoned and left to the elements before WWII, eventually being purchased by Christian's grandparents, William and Margaret of Honolulu, in 1945. Wanting to retire to Kona (where Margaret's great grandparents, Reverend Asa and Lucy Thurston, part of the company of first Christian missionaries to the Islands, who arrived in Kailua-Kona, the seat of Hawaii's ruling Kamehameha reign in 1820, lived until the 1860s), they chose the cool uplands of Holualoa. Hale Akala has been in the family for four generations. Cattle roam the surrounding ten acres of pasture and you'll hear an occasional bull bellowing from nearby Palani Ranch, in the quiet evening hours.
