Large Open Lanais, Ocean Views, 4 Bedroom, 3 Bath, Fully Appointed Kitchen.

Featured in the coffee table book, The Hawaiian House Now, the home is a historic 1895 structure, modified in the 1940s and retaining the charm of old Hawaii with architecture and furnishings of the day, while satisfying the needs and aesthetic of today's lifestyle.

Panoramic views of the ocean, Kona coast, tree canopy, landscaped yard, and surrounding pastures will amaze. The cool 1,200' elevation of Holualoa, the open lanais, spacious bedrooms, and a well-appointed kitchen are sure to please. The rural feeling of Hale Akala and the large established yard with old plantings of avocado, ulu (breadfruit,) fig, starfruit (carambola,) dragon fruit, pineapple, banana and lime trees is guaranteed to take you away from life's stresses and please the senses.

Four bedrooms to choose from, of which three have their own private bathroom within. The fourth bedroom, with a full-sized bed, is on the lower level of the home and adjacent to the TV/sitting room. Three sets of French doors extends to a terraced area in the yard, providing the room beautiful light. There are no bathroom facilities with this room. The main floor level consists of kitchen, dining, living room, two lanais, and two bedrooms with queen-sized beds. Upper-level master suite has a king-sized bed, two window seats and a single day bed. The window seats can sleep children under the age of nine. The day-bed area is separate from the master bedroom, with a work/desk area adjacent. In total, one king, two queen, one single, and one full bed will accommodate eight in beds. The window seats allow for two more. A wonderful fireplace on the main floor living area will warm you on chilly winter nights. Lower floor accesses the yard and outdoor cooking terrace via stairs from the kitchen as well as from the ocean-side lanai.

A charming 1940-era guest cottage with an appealing screened-in lanai, small kitchen and full bath, privately situated across the driveway, sleeps two in a queen bed, and allows parties of ten to twelve adults to use the entire property. About the Owner

Aloha! I'm Lisa. I'm Hawaii born and raised, Honolulu and Hilo, and haved lived here on this property for thirty years, raising four children with my husband, Christian. I love to share my culture, our Islands' stories and history with all. Guestbook comments from the owner

From the moment we walked through the door, I felt all the tension just slide from my shoulders. We were surrounded by beauty, both inside and out. Our host, Lisa, thought of everything we could possibly have wanted: the freshest fruit, right from the garden/trees, books about the island, even Hawaiian music CDs...and the best coffee EVER. She is a wonderful resource about the property and the history of the island.

The house has lots of art and is tastefully appointed, but still feels like a place where you can relax. The animals are part of the welcome committee.

Lisa, mahalo for a wonderful visit. Aloha to you and Christian and Mariella, Hobbs, Maca and co. See you next year!

Amazing property and house

  • 5 of 5
Our group loved our stay at Lisa's home! It is a wonderful property, and we had a great time picking fresh fruit off the trees in the yard, petting the horses and exploring the area. The house itself was great for a group. We fit a large group comfortably, and enjoyed cooking together in the kitchen and eating on the lanai overlooking the ocean. There were beach towels, snorkeling gear, and boogie boards for trips to the beach. Lisa was very welcoming and accommodating and I think everyone in our group would highly recommend staying at the house!

Home away from home

This home has everything one could possibly want for a place to live, let alone for a vacation rental. It is a lovely old home in a wonderful location - unless you prefer beachside. The views are lovely and it felt cooler than the the air felt ocean side. I would have given it five stars if not for the noisy roosters from the neighboring property. If you are early risers you may not find this to be a problem.

In choosing a vacation rental, you are choosing the mood, feelings and memories of your trip. With my children fresh out of college and mother still able to travel, there was a small window of opportunity to enjoy some vacation time together, so we chose Hale Akala, and very glad we did. Not only was this a great location to explore the many treasuries of the Big Island, but the perfect place to inspire feeling, thoughts and thus conversations of our dreams, memories, family history and culture, the things you store away in your heart, that seldom get to come out and play.
Never have I come to the islands and not hushed off every day for some outdoor adventure, but this home had so much to explore and things to do that there were days we never left. And with all of it's books, music CD's, artwork, collectable / furnishings, gardens, comfortable views, and wonderful host Lisa, my mother was very content staying back on the days we hiked and snorkeled. At evening we cooked together in the kitchen and then took our wine to the lanai for stimulating conversation late into the night. It was these conversation that became the highlight of the trip and memories that will last. And now we are on our way back again, this time with mother and brothers to this magical place on the hill were hearts come together.

Perfect Vacation Rental in Kona

  • 5 of 5
It was such an honor to stay at this home steeped in Hawaiian history and surrounded by a stunning art collection. The house had plenty of room for our party of six and we enjoyed several wonderful dinners with local friends using a well appointed kitchen and separate dining room. The grounds are spacious with views of the coast. The garden offered lots of fresh avocados, star fruit, lilikoi, bananas and papaya. The house is on the south side of Holualoa within walking distance to the galleries, restaurant and other amenities in the village.
All in all this is the ideal property for relaxation and as a base to explore the big island.

A little gem!

  • 5 of 5
What a superb house! If you decide to stay you will not regret it. The house has such a lovely relaxed and peaceful holiday feel. Close to the beach, shops and the fantastic little village, Holualoa. There is a really nice little restaurant there that Lisa recommended. The family went there several times and we where never disappointed.

Lisa was very happy to help me organise and recommend several restaurant, helicopter flights, beaches and day trips. She helped make our trip so very memorable.

The three bedrooms with bathrooms are beautifully decorated and appointed. Two of them have fantastic views of the ocean and the Kona coast. The third has a beautiful view of the garden. The fourth (my bedroom) was a bit stuffy at night as you could not open the french doors as there where no fly screens. I ended up sleeping in the window seat in the Kitchen rather than the 4th bedroom. I did not mind as I got to enjoy the day dawn. The view was fabulous any time of the day. I also had someone bring me a cuppa tea in bed every morning.

The kitchen is amazing, the pictures that line the walls are fantastic, the garden is beautiful and the view is superb.

I take away many fond family memories eating, drinking and playing in and around the house. It was a great location for a family reunion.

During our stay we did not turn on the TV once. There is just so much to do, see and experience. The best experience was the many nights we sat on the lanai watching the sun set with a glass of bubbles and chatting with family.

I would love to visit again!

Everything we were looking for ...

We had an excellent stay at Hale Akala. The house and grounds are beautiful, inviting, and relaxing. The owner Lisa is very friendly and knowledgeable about local activities, beaches, shops, restaurants, etc. She even took my wife standup paddleboarding! We did a lot during our trip but sometimes the simple things stick with you: sitting on the lanai in the cool morning air, sipping freshly brewed Kona coffee while taking in the expansive view -- a perfect start to another great day in Hawaii.

From the Owner

Hale Akala is a special piece of Kona. Built in 1895 by Manuel Silveira Goularte, a Portuguese immigrant who raised his thirteen children here. It was utilized by cowboys of the neighboring Greenwell family's Palani Ranch, to re-supply and breakfast in the 1920 and 30s. It was abandoned and left to the elements before WWII, eventually being purchased by Christian's grandparents, William and Margaret of Honolulu, in 1945. Wanting to retire to Kona (where Margaret's great grandparents, Reverend Asa and Lucy Thurston, part of the company of first Christian missionaries to the Islands, who arrived in Kailua-Kona, the seat of Hawaii's ruling Kamehameha reign in 1820, lived until the 1860s), they chose the cool uplands of Holualoa. Hale Akala has been in the family for four generations. Cattle roam the surrounding ten acres of pasture and you'll hear an occasional bull bellowing from nearby Palani Ranch, in the quiet evening hours.
