About the Owner

Hi! My name is Christina and I am a new co-owner of these homes with my brother, cousin and our families. We are proud to have recently acquired this unique 12-acre estate.

I am a school teacher, who currently teaches Kindergarten. My husband and I are raising our three children in his hometown state of northern New Jersey. My brother, Nick, works in finance; he and his wife are raising their three children in our hometown state of Vermont not far from this property. As for my cousin Kiri, he grew up and lives in NYC. He works as a R.E. Broker and the locals enjoy poking fun calling him a city slicker.

We all love the great outdoors and jumped at the opportunity when this property came on the market. We have made immediate improvements and plan to make many more as time and finances allow. We are humbled to have you as our guests. Your suggestions are welcomed and appreciated as we embark on this new adventure. I look forward to communicating with you!

Great family getaway

  • 5 of 5
My extended family rented out the 5BR side for a 5 day vacation to get together and enjoy the great outdoors in the green mountains. We had a great time and the estate was everything we could have asked for. We had a great time at the pool and surrounding areas. The Stowe bike path was great, as well as the Ben & Jerry's factory and the Jeffersonville farmers market had tons of local food, arts and crafts to choose from. Being so close to Smuggs we also got to check out their comedy show and hypnotist at night while the in-laws watched the kids!

We had a great time and will definitely look to rent again next summer!

Checking out the other reviews I just wanted to state we saw no mice droppings, and had no issues with the property. It may have some "dated" wallpaper but everything was in good working order, and I was not concerned for the safety of my 3 small children (4,3 and 1yo). We brought our own pool toys and bikes and would not expect a rental to provide this as it can be an issue with insurance these days. (I have owned vacation rentals myself so know first hand.)

Thanks Nick and Christina!

Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5
14 people for a family reunion rented both sides of the big house. Beautiful private grounds with exceptionally clean pool (someone came every third day to clean) and we'll maintained tennis courts. BBQ and charcoal grill worked perfectly. It was nice to have both to cook for 14 people. Madonna (larger house with bigger master) is very dated but comfortable. Sterling side is beautifully decorated making it quaint and comfortable. Fully stocked kitchen (cups/playes/mugs/utensils).
Fireplaces inside made for cozy fires and outside pit is a plus for Smores. (Although tree branches are very close to the fire pit so beware of stray flames)
Incredibly private setting at a great rental price for Smuggler's Notch. We are planning on extending our family reunion from a long weekend to an entire week next summer. We loved the zip lining, hikes, Gondola up Stowe and the restaurant The Family Table. ( all within 5 miles of the house).

We can't wait to come back in winter!

We can't wait to come back in winter!
  • 5 of 5
Our large family with kids of various ages stayed at Sterling House last week-from August 10 to August 15. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed with this place and what it had to offer!

The space around the house looked clean and the grass was neatly trimmed. As we took a walk around, we discovered that the swimming pool was safely fenced and its water was clear and warm. Playing at the tennis court was another opportunity for the kids to be safe and have fun.

The interior of the house was also well designed and super clean. The kitchen was spotless and fully stocked, with the brand new refrigerator and dishwasher. We cooked dinner and had barbecue, since the grill was provided at the porch. In the evening we made s'mores and gathered together in this cozy living room. The large dinning room table had plenty of space for us to eat inside and simultaneously enjoy the spectacular views this place has to offer. The large patio was also an opportunity for us to enjoy our morning coffee while looking at the beautiful scenery. All the rooms were spacious, clean and stocked with clean linens and towels.

The places around have to offer a variety of activities for grown ups and kids. The famous Smuggler's Notch Resort is located right across the street. We also visited 158 Main Restaurant & Bakery, located 5 minutes away---we highly recommend its Blueberry Pancakes and exceptional Eggs Benedict.
As a mother of 6 year old, 4 year old and a 3 month old baby, I was primarily concerned with safety of my kids and cleanliness I was going to find here. I might say that my expectations were exceeded and we enjoyed our stay. My older nieces and nephews had fun and were impressed with this place as much as their parents were.

I highly recommended this place to my friends and more family. We can't wait to come back here during the winter time and enjoy the fire place and the sauna.

Nice place, poorly managed

  • 1 of 5
Upon arrival, the place looked very promising, as shown in the pictures. It offered us lots of privacy and space.

However, there were some issues we faced during the stay that ranged from inconveniences to serious health & safety risks:

1) Minor Issues:
Leaky kitchen faucet (they'd placed a container to catch the dripping water, which overflowed and got the floor wet). The basements were damp and smelly. There were no pool toys for the kids, while their house description says "children welcome".

2) Serious Issues:
-The smoke detector kept going off even if we boiled water. Nick, the owner, admitted he was aware of this and said he had them fixed, but hadn't checked. He just told us to disconnect it.

3) VERY serious Issues:
-The garbage dumpsters close to the chalets were not emptied and bears raided them every night. Nick hadn't checked this out so we weren't aware until we saw the mess created by the bears. Luckily, none of us blundered into a bear.
-There were mouse droppings in the utensils drawer, which we discovered the night before we left. Disgusting! Mouse droppings can contaminate the air and can cause severe and sometimes fatal respiratory issues. WE WERE IN THIS ENVIRONMENT FOR ALMOST 3 DAYS. I am asthmatic and at higher risk for pulmonary issues. One of the main illnesses caused by rodent feces: hantavirus. Please research this illness, since I am not allowed to post links in my review.

After the trip, I spoke with Nick about our issues. He was only willing to refund the small cleaning fee. This, to me, was just not enough. No garbage cleanup, bears coming to the house because of it, and mouse droppings in the drawers! I tried to amicably resolve our displeasure with him by asking for a refund of 20% of our rental, which I thought was fair compensation for the mess we endured and the unnecessary risks he put us in. He chose to not compensate us any further.

It's a nice property, no doubt. But it's unhealthy to stay in and not managed well. My review is meant to help you make a better decision on where to stay. Given that these owners don't seem to care about the health or satisfaction of their guests, I suggest checking out the tons of beautiful resorts in the area (everything is close by) that seem much cleaner and organized.

Owner's Response: We'd like to take a few moments to address Hasmeet's comments, sharing our thoughts with him, as well as our past and future guests.
1) MINOR CONCERNS-A) We apologized for the inconvenience that the faucet was leaky, and we tried a temporary remedy. This was done as a last resort, since our handyman was on vacation. On his return the faucet was fixed.
-B)About elevated humidity in the basement which does occur during the summer. To end the mustiness, we switched from the original dehumidifiers & installed new self-draining units, to insure our guests' wonderful time on our estate.C) Since our visitors' stay is our number one priority, we put every effort to make it secure and child friendly. Therefore, no pool toys are provided in our property solely for safety reasons. This is because children of every age stay there, and we believe that it is the parents' right to incorporate the toys that their children are comfortable playing with.
2) SERIOUS CONCERNS-Our estate follows Vermont's present local fire code, which mandates the installation of hard-wired interconnected smoke detectors. It is plausible that either high humidity, such as from kettle's steam, or strong breeze might have triggered one detector. To rectify this problem, we switched to autonomous room-specific detectors, until we resolve the glitches of the state-of-the-art interconnected system.
3) VERY SERIOUS CONCERNS-A)Black bears are indigenous in Vermont, but rare in our area.Understanding our guests' concerns we installed bear-proof dumpster lids, to prevent any future incidents. The dumpsters are MORE THAN 200 FEET from the estates' chalet. According to NABA, black bears are herbivores with extremely timid attitude. They do not attack humans, even when they are cornered with their cubs. -B)The vast majority of our guests adored our neat place and its hygiene. Therefore, we are surprised that only Hasmeet may have found mouse droppings and only in a drawer, at the very last evening of his stay. Would that have happened due to a door left open during his stay? Might there be something else? A guest who visited right after him did not report any mouse droppings, demonstrating that there is certainly no infestation problem, and that our estate's environment is safe and healthy. According to the CDCP there has been only a single incident throughout the beginning of record keeping, making Vermont one of the safest states for camping & outdoor.
Furthermore, Hasmeet DID ACCEPT A 10% REFUND!

Fabulous family vacation spot!!

  • 5 of 5
My family and I stayed here for a week in July 2014. We rented both sides, there were about 25 of us. It was so much fun. The scenery was fantastic and the road getting there from Stowe is one I will never forget. So scenic. Having my whole family together in one place was worth every penny and then some. I just couldn’t imagine having to stay in a hotel and having separate rooms. There were plenty of dishes and cooking utensils, bath towels, and bedding. We did have a slight problem, but I called Nick and he resolved it almost immediately. If we’re ever heading up to Vermont again, this is the only place I want to stay. Thank you Nick and Christina!!

Perfect Spot for our Large Group!

  • 5 of 5
Our large group (9 adults, 12 kids) had been looking for an alternative to a hotel for the Bitters Lacrosse tournament in Stowe and took a chance booking this property, which was newly listed on VRBO at the time. Boy, did we hit the jackpot! Right from the start, the owner was extremely pleasant, responsive, and helpful in helping us through booking our large group.

The property and house is just as it appears in the photos - absolutely beautiful, with breathtaking views. The property is obviously very well taken care of. Beautiful perennials are planted all along the walkways, porch, and driveway. The access staircases to the pool and down to the tennis courts appear to be also newly installed and really add to the charm of the property. The kids absolutely LOVED the tennis court and the pool. The pool was immaculately clean and the pool deck had plenty of chairs and loungers to just relax and take in the gorgeous July weather. The hot tub on the deck was not working during our trip but all the other great things about this place easily compensated for that. We did not use the saunas, but peeked in and can see how amazing those would be in the winter after a day of skiing. Having the Brewster River Grill right across the end of the driveway was convenient on the nights we didn't want to cook. The food was great, and the owners were extremely hospitable.

The house itself had everything we needed - clean towels, household items, grills, kitchen appliances, and more. There was PLENTY of space for all of us and it was just perfect for our large group. More than enough bedrooms to accommodate everyone, and the older kids and teenagers loved having the bunk beds and additional sleeping options on the bottom floor. PLENTY of bathrooms and showers as well.

We also had a chance to meet extended family of the owners, who came to check and clean the pool, and do some minor yard work. We loved hearing a bit of history about the property and how Nick and Christina came to own this beautiful place.

Our deposit was returned very promptly upon our return. I truly can't say enough wonderful things about this house and our overall experience renting. We definitely hope to return many times.

Location

From the Owner

Once you drive into the estate you will understand, 'Why this property?'. Location is PRIME. You will not find another estate privately owned and close enough to Smugglers' Notch in which you can put on your ski boots and walk to the resort. Smugglers Notch was voted the #1 Ski Resort in the East by the readers of SKI Magazine in 2014 and has been voted the #1 Family Resort for fifteen years in a row as well. Smuggs is branded as 'America's #1 Family Resort'. You'll be amazed at the breathtaking grounds and views. My cousin, Kiri, says there is a sort of 'firewall for the mind that keeps you in the moment'. Last time we were up here was Christmas and there was an ice storm. Everywhere we looked the views worthy of a post card. The sun was shining on the ice and the ice's weight arched all the trees and framed the roadways. This reminded me of how much of a beautiful backdrop I had growing up.

The property allows for year-round activities. Explore 12 acres of wooded terrain. Track animals or admire birds. Roast s'mores by the outdoor fire pit. Sit in the hot tub overlooking the mountains, take a dip in the pool, or swing your racquet on the private tennis court.

Take a short drive to the small town of Jeffersonville just down from the mountain road. Hanley's General Store and The Farm Store offer food, groceries, and Vermont made goods. Head to the Smugglers Notch Distillery to sample the local vodka. Restaurants, like The Mix and 158 Main, allow for dining choices off the mountain.

Last but not least, take a drive or hike through the mountain pass road (Rte. 108) that connects Smugglers Notch and Stowe. This narrow, twisting road delights visitors with natural waterfalls and immense rock cliffs. Best viewed during foliage! Please note, the mountain pass is closed during winter months for safety.
