(Please also see my waterfront home in Fairhope, AL. It is VRBO listing number 170332. A good place for folks from New Orleans to go be on the water.)

This wonderful, cozy apartment with your own private entrance and shared front porch in an 1889 Eastlake Victorian House is your gateway to the heart of one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities in the world.

In the Lower Garden District historical section of New Orleans, this house is just two blocks from satisfying your craving for antiques of the finest kind, the best roasted coffee, food at some of the most amazing restaurants, and booze at an incredibly eclectic collection of bars on Magazine Street.

It is just three blocks from the Convention Center (if you, unfortunately, have to work), and Mardi Gras World, where you can see how that party started, and where many of the parades start during Mardi Gras itself. As a matter of fact, between Mardi Gras World and St. Charles Street, 30... Yes... THIRTY parades go within six blocks of this house (but not right in front of the house). That's good, see? You won't find anybody sleeping it off on your porch in the morning.

Speaking of St. Charles Street, a six-block walk, past some of the most beautiful and elegant houses, between Magazine and St. Charles, gets you to the streetcar. The closest stop is St. Charles at Felicity. $1.25 (exact change please) gets you a ride on the best way to travel in the U.S.A.!

You say you want to party... Hmm... No problem, but remember that this is a residential neighborhood, and I like my neighbors, so the real partying will be done out in the city. If Magazine Street and its pleasures are too sedate for you, head down Annunciation Street toward the Warehouse District, CBD, and the French Quarter. a 10-minute walk gets you to The Rusty Nail, Bellocq, Ugly Dog Saloon, Dino's, The Circle Bar, Republic New Orleans, and on and on...

Feeling more thoughtful... The wonderful National WWII Museum, one of the most popular attractions in New Orleans, is a ten-minute walk away as well, and is great for kids, too. The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the Confederate Memorial Hall Museum are right next door. By the way, if all the walking starts to bother you, and you have taken full advantage of the streetcar, a phone call will get a cab to the house in 5 minutes.

Food... Well, what can I say? Cochon, Annunciation, Eleven 79, Mayas Nuevo Latino, HiVolt, and Half Moon are some of our favorite places within short walking distance. there is no limit to where you can eat, and we will be happy to give you a list, suggestions, and so forth.

To sum up, in terms of location, you have it all right here at your fingertips! Enjoy!

About the Owner

After traveling a great deal, this native of Mobile (whose mother was a true Beatnik who lived on Royal Street in the Quarter in the early sixties), and his wife, a true Frenchie, bought this house as a way to recapture and exercise their love for the Deep South, France, and urban living, all in one fell swoop.

Paradise on the Front Porch

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I loved the 3 weeks we spent in Sabin's home for Mardi Gras. He went overboard to be helpful and kind. So much is nearby this location, good food, great walks, and you can get around easily. we loved sitting on the front porch and chatting with the locals as they walked by. One time several costumed Indians rode right by in the street on horses . The service personnel were great! I can't recommend this home away from home enough. EVERYTHING is provided!

I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay, and that you were able, during your house-hunting, to find a place quickly, and that you are moving back to New Orleans permanently. The city will most definitely benefit from lovely folks like you!

Perfect Overflow Apartment or Apartment for 2

  • 4 of 5
We were a group of 4 women meeting in New Orleans for a long weekend. One from our group wanted to have a separate space. Sabin was very helpful in offering a joint rental with this apartment and the large one next door. It worked perfectly; our friend was able to escape when she needed alone time. The space is large (sitting room and bedroom) with a nice-sized kitchen and bathroom.

Perfect end-of-day getaway

  • 5 of 5
This is a particularly good location if you're visiting NO for an event at the Convention Center. It was an easy 10 minute walk for me to the upriver end of the Convention Center (though keep in mind that it could be another 10 minutes to get to where you need to be, because it's a REALLY long building!) I like walking, especially with nice cool weather like we had during my November visit, and routinely walked to the Quarter, Downtown, along the river, etc. For late nights or times I was too wiped out to walk, it was an inexpensive taxi ride back to the house. On the couple of occasions when I needed to cab it somewhere from the house, I called for a cab, and they came promptly. (As another reviewer pointed out, there aren't a lot of cabs just cruising by). Although some people may prefer to be more in the center of NOLA action, I personally preferred more of a "refuge". I loved the fact that after a day of meetings and dining out and going to clubs, rather than returning to a sterile hotel room that could be anywhere, I could come back to a nice, quiet, roomy and comfortable place with high ceilings, ceiling fans and interesting decor, where I could pour myself a glass of wine (that didn't cost $12), make a snack, turn on the TV and feel like I'm someplace I'd be happy to call home. Plus, as much as I like meeting friends for a good southern breakfast, it was great to be able to have a full kitchen and prepare myself a nice healthy breakfast while still in my jammies! By the way, the owner is super-nice and responsive, and has prepared a wonderful "Welcome" booklet with lots of helpful tips about enjoying the city. I would most definitely stay here again.

Perfect for Conventioneers and Magazine Shoppers

  • 5 of 5
I stayed here for a few days in October. Went for a morning run into the Quarter and along the river each morning. Walked to the Convention Center (15-20min) for my meetings daily.
Walked to the Irish Channel for shopping and coffee.
A car would be ideal - unless you enjoy the 15-20min walks (which I do). Taxis require a phone call - as rarely do they pass right in front.
The house itself is lovely. Nice amenities. Perfect front porch for sitting and watching. I am booking a trip back already.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed everything, and that the location work out for your convention needs.

Indeed, we are within a 15-minute walk (2-3 blocks) of shopping on Magazine Street, the restaurants and hotels in the business district (4 blocks), the streetcar (5 blocks), and the convention center itself (3 blocks). I can't remember if you had a car, and the parking right in front of the house is great, but there is also a taxicab stand just two blocks away on our same side of the street. You can call them, or just walk up to them if they have a car in the stand. Fortunately, it is a residential area, and not the in the middle of Manhattan, so it stays respectably quiet without being far from anything.
We certainly look forward to you coming back in November, and thank you again!
