Property Details

Updated: May 18, 2015
Owner built on the bluff overlooking Kachemak Bay.

This 6 acre property, has a large lawn leading down to the 300 ft bluff where you can pick a salad from the 30 x 72 foot greenhouse. A trail leads through birch, alder, and spruce along the small creek to the bluff where you can smell the sea, watch ravens, eagles, and gulls soar at eye level and view rafts of otters floating beyond the beach.

Close to town and new to VRBO, this custom built home will appeal to those who appreciate something special. Window sills and stair rails were hand milled with local cottonwood and there are many other special touches not ordinarily seen in a vacation rental. Visitors will enjoy a very clean, comfortable and private setting.

There is a new 12 inch Queen 'sleep innovations' bed in the bedroom with custom dressers. There is a fold out queen futon in the living room to accommodate 2 other guests. The owner lives in a separate home 100 feet away and will be available to answer questions, perhaps facilitate your way across the bay, and help make your stay in Homer as enjoyable as possible.

About the Owner

I first came to Alaska in 1976, In 1977 I began a journey around the world that lasted four and half years. In 1982 I settled back into Alaska in earnest. I built a cabin across Kachemak Bay, then began building our home on the Homer Bluff in 1995. Everything on our property is custom built, including your lodging. The timber frame portion of our house is made from beetle-killed spruce off this land. I have worked in mineral exploration, carpentry, fishing, as a teacher, and presently as an RN in our local hospital in the Emergency Department. I met my wife, Robbie, the green thumb of the family, in our hospital in 1989. Our daughter, Hailey is in her first year of college.

We love to travel and meet people from different places and cultures which is the primary inspiration for having a vacation rental. I think we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and it is good energy and a great pleasure to share this with others.

The pictures on the home page describe it well. What a view of the bay and the glaciers. Steve and Robbie were great host and we enjoyed the fresh vegetables from there greenhouse and garden. I usually do not write reviews, but this place is very nice and the owners are great. We will be staying there again on our next visit to Homer. Thanks, M & M

My husband and I came here for 2 nights late July 2014. The booking process was simple. Steve left easy directions. The property is perfect for a couple. Very comfortable beautiful place. And the grounds and greenhouse are inspiring! Had a fabulous dinner with the veggies from it. Very quiet as well. Thanks Steve and Robby. We will send friends and we will be back! T and C

From the Owner

We are fortunate to live in an area of such sublime natural beauty. To see each day's unique texture and color of the sea or a simple walk to sit near the bluff fills the senses and affirms how grand it is to be alive.

Homer has many attractions to entertain visitors with varying interests. Although there is more going on in the summer, winter provides good opportunities also. Our new modern library aimed at Grewink glacier is a welcome place to explore or sit around the fireplace with a good book. The Oceans and Islands Visitor Center offers exhibits and live bird viewing cams with trails leading down to the slough and Bishops Beach. The Pratt museum has outdoor and indoor exhibits that showcase local history. There is a fantastic network of cross country ski trails and a rope tow for downhill skiing and tube sledding at Olson Mountain. Trolling for Winter Kings has become increasingly popular.

In the summer Pier One theater on the spit offers local theater. The annual shorebird Festival occurs every spring and the Wooden Boat Festival happens in the fall.

Across the bay is the 400,000 acre Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park which is accessible by boat taxi for those who enjoy hiking among mountains, rivers, lakes, and glaciers. Seldovia and the artist community of Halibut Cove are also easily accessible by boat, ferry, or plane.

Although the Homer Harbor is primarily home to a local fishing fleet there are also many excellent charter operations for bird and sea creature viewing as well as Halibut and Salmon fishing.

From the Owner

Gardens and trails to explore on the property. A peaceful, uncrowded setting. Sidewalk a mile up to Ocean Overlook Park or 2 miles down into town. Great Bird Viewing off the Bluff framed by the Kenai Mountains and Homer Spit. Plenty of room for your boat if you're down trolling for Kings or fishing for Halibut.
