Home Built in Forest in Private Nature Reserve And 50 Private Acres With Trails.

The Laughing Falcon Nature Reserve is a private getaway encompassing 50 acres within Rancho Colibri. There are several mountain hotels in Guanacaste, a couple of the most renown are just a few miles beyond the ranch. Typically over a hundred tourists from the local beaches travel daily up to the resorts to go on the zip lines, horseback riding, visit hot springs and spas, go birding, etc.

Rancho Colibri is located where the Pacific Dry Tropical Forest and 'cattle country' meet. The Guanacaste Conservation Area encompasses over 400,000 acres of protected regions in Costa Rica's Pacific Northwest. In an area of small farms and large haciendas, Rancho Colibri sits on a hilltop with a fantastic 360 degree view. In collaboration with 'the family next door' at Hacienda Las Imagenes, we are a practical demonstration of sustainable ranching and agroforestry. We offer a combination of forest and wildlife activities, together with ranching and 'cowboy experiences.' Trail riding is available at several locations nearby, as well as professional rodeo training, as Las Imagenes is the country's largest breeder of Performance Quarter Horses and offers some of the best equestrian facilities.

The weather in Guanacaste often will be dry and 'in the 90's,' whereas at the ranch we'll be 10 degrees or so cooler than the coast. The 2400 square foot house (of which a third is covered deck) is literally set in the forest with a western view looking out on the Pacific.

Every room has a forest and ocean view, along with deck. The master suite is located on southern end of house, with queen size bed, bathroom and walk-in closet. Second bedroom is on northern end of house, with queen size bed and shared bath. Third bedroom is in loft, with two single beds and shared bath below. There is a family room in loft and balcony, with couch (and two air mattresses available). Main room with kitchen and living room has a 20 foot ceiling (all rooms have ceiling fans). A bar between kitchen and living area seats 4, and a round table for 6 typically sits on deck in front of kitchen, but can also be brought inside. Glass sliding doors and screens open up from each room to deck. A washer and dryer are located between kitchen and northern bedroom.

A couple miles after the Vandara Resort and about a mile before the fork to the Borinquen and Buena Vista Hotels, you will turn left onto our private road--known as Cuesta del Diablo. This is the original road to the mountain haciendas, and you will wind your way uphill for a mile to arrive at our ranch house. 4-wheel drive is recommended, as you'll be travelling on several miles of gravel roads (and there are opportunities for 'off roading').

While there are incredible experiences to be had at Laughing Falcon, we want to make sure that it is 'the right fit.' There is not a TV and currently we do not have wifi--the local 3G network is available and smartphones work around much of the property. We are 'off grid' and can provide power usually 'around the clock,' but our preference is to curtail energy usage by 9:00 p.m. (we provide battery operated night lights). Most of our appliances are propane powered. Our energy is provided through a combination of solar, propane (including generator), and batteries. We plan to expand to wind and add more solar panels, but we seek a minimum of power lines and infrastructure (no overhead wires here!). Our region is nationally one of the primary geothermal energy production zones as well as wind power, and you can check this out if you wish.

While many people visiting Costa Rica will seek beach areas along our coasts, often visitors like to combine their visit with mountain regions. Couples, families and groups traveling together often have various interests--we are well positioned and provide more than 25 years of experience in meeting various expectations. About the Owner

A native Californian, I moved with my family in 1972 at age 11 to Costa Rica, where I went to school and was a resident for 20 years. In 1990 I married another native Californian, who was one of my WorldTeach volunteer teachers. Since 1987 I had been managing the Finca Colibri, and when we came across this property together in 2000, we decided to sell my original farm and establish Rancho Colibri. Graduate school then kids pushed construction on the ranch off until 2013, when we decided it was time to build our ranch house and offer a place for our children to experience the 'Costa Rica I had grown up around.' Our family currently resides in Marin County, California; where we work in the risk management and real estate fields--my specialty being Vacation Homes.

In the early 90's I was the director of Audubon of Costa Rica, and since '86 I had been farming and consulting throughout Costa Rica. For 15 years I managed a farm about a half hour west of the international airport in San Jose. I have travelled throughout most of Costa Rica, as well as internationally, and when we came across this property we knew it was something special. By the early 2000's Guanacaste had become Costa Rica's premier tourist destination, and the international airport in Liberia has become a great gateway to the region. While the beaches are fantastic, those living in Costa Rica know that the cooler mountains are the 'place to be.' Our property was segregated from one of the larger haciendas, and lies at the top of a hill with fantastic 360 degree views--to the west is the ocean and to the east is the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. As we are surrounded by the Guanacaste Conservation Area (now encompassing more than 400,000 acres) our views will always be of the Dry Pacific Forest that characterizes our region. As the forest is regenerating around us, in order to respond to our growing tourism industry as well as better land management, wildlife is increasing in numbers and restoring its natural balance. By visiting our surrounding area, tourists will provide economic incentives to continue to protect environment and enhance the attractions available. Our private road begins 2 miles (3.2km) past the entrance to Vandara Hot Springs & Resort (where you cross the Tizate River), 3 miles (5km) before the Borinquen Hot Springs and Luxury Mountain Lodge, and the Buena Vista Hotel. As you drive along the road, Rancho Colibri expands the top of the hill on your left--directly across on your right is the canopy tour and zip lines at Vandara. The Borinquen and Buena Vista Hotels also offer zip line canopy tours, along with other adventure activities, restaurants, archeological sites, etc. Rancho Colibri coordinates activities for the local Buena Vista Equestrian Community, offering trail riding, professional rodeo training, clinics, etc.

Birding and wildlife viewing are excellent throughout the surrounding area, beginning with trails exclusive to guests staying at Rancho Colibri and heading out from the Guest Ranch to surrounding properties.

Views from the house and ranch encompass the Gulf of Papagayo--the nearest beaches are accessible within an hours drive from the ranch. The nearby Tizate and Salitral Rivers offer excellent swimming holes and some impressive waterfalls, and can be reached within an hour's hike or 15 minute drive. On the ranch there are natural pools along the creek, but as most visitors arrive during dry season, typically there is very little water. We have special arrangements to use the pools at the surrounding resorts--especially the Vandara pool alongside the Tizate River.

Hot Springs can be found at the surrounding resorts, as well as 'out in the wild.' A first class complete service spa is located at the Borinquen Hotel just up the road.

Our season typically runs from December-June (September-October access is difficult due to heavy rain); you may inquire about reservations for July-August and November. Ranch house is surrounded by natural environment, and is located within a working ranch--this is "the real thing." Accommodations are very nice, but we shy away from the term "luxury." Peaceful/relaxing or adventurous/strenuous?

We are perhaps the best Guest Ranch in Costa Rica and the only home in the area! Besides access to all the services that hundreds of tourists visit our area for daily, we offer privacy--both at our home and the attached 50 acres of forest and trails for your exclusive use. You likely won't find anyone on surrounding 4,000 acres+ either, so there is plenty of space to have to yourselves--yet restaurants and amenities are a short 15 minute drive away. For more than 25 years our company Mesoamerica (Institute for Central American Studies) has managed educational travel, study abroad, and group travel to Costa Rica and Central America. We have expertise in various fields and more than 40 years experience 'cutting through red tape' and 'getting things done where others have failed.' In your case, your party is our primary focus and we'll do our best to make sure you have an excellent experience.
