If you want to check dates and respective pricing you can do this very accurately on the upper right of this web page in the reservation box. Just enter the in / out dates and click detailed pricing. The quote will be correct; we keep the online info up to date.

A veritable nature preserve of 70 secluded acres on a ridge at the Napa/Sonoma county line, home has a breathtaking vanishing edge pool with views to Mount St Helena and beyond. 300 degree views of both the Sonoma and Napa valleys are seen from the 1200 sq ft Summit viewing/dining deck just behind the main house. Nature is just BIG up here. Every design choice has been made to to improve ones ability to sense and absorb the splendors of rural Sonoma county. We do our utmost to create the ultimate vacation environment, anticipating ones every need. The gardens at the house are at their beginning: wisteria will droop over the metal armature at the front of the house and roses will abound in the side yard. A floral cutting garden and herb garden are established adjacent to the house and designed for resident guests' use.

Every one of the 7 bedrooms has its own bath. The media room can act as an 8th bedroom since it has it's own adjoining bath and can accommodate 3 twins and/or a King. The pool is 60 feet long and the surrounding deck exceeds 3000 sq ft with barbecue area and fire-pit. 8 person (known to hold more!) hot tub, bocce in the back yard, and a media room with 70' flat screen and surround sound. Extensive area for outdoor seating and dining including dining tables both inside and out. The kitchen was designed for our chefs, thus professional quality: 10' island, 4' range, 3 refrigerators, 2 dishwashers, options for state of the art cooking equipment, etc. The owner. a european trained interior designer, has used antique furnishings and finishes throughout. The refinement of the design adds much to the overall experience and level of relaxation affordable at this awe-inspiring property.

Particulars:

We have a caretaker who lives on a neighboring property, so unlike most VRBO rentals, you can be assured of better oversight and assistance; someone is almost always on call. There is firewood on the premises and the fire pit will be stacked, ready for your match to set them alight. The pool is truly chemical free with numerous in-water benches.

Check-in is guaranteed by 4:00 p.m. and checkout is at 11:00 a.m. We do our very best to accommodate early check ins and late checkouts, but cannot make any guarantees until one week prior to arrival in case the house is occupied on your arrival or departure date.

Events:

We now have access to a nearby rural event facility or can help you locate a back-roads venue of choice. Ask us about any size or type of rural wine country event; we have a 5 star event planner on staff. The size and scope of this property affords unique venue choices for wine tasting events, dinner parties for all celebrations, ceremonies, rehearsal dinners, even hayrides to a private dinner on the Summit deck if you are in the mood! A separate event fee, deposit and insurance will be required.

Corporate Retreats:

We are uniquely well configured to provide both the mind expanding natural environment plus the required amenities and services to truly insure blue ocean level creativity.

Location, unique features:

We are so high up, 2500 feet (we are slightly above neighboring Pride Winery), that we are actually rarely affected by the bay area fog or “marine layer”. For vacationers this guarantees endless warm summer nights and much hotter average temperatures during the day - ideal for taking advantage of the pool and grounds. All the bedrooms are air-conditioned to be sure. This is basically a state of the art “green” structure with superb climate control. For cooler periods we have radiant floor heat throughout. The 70 acre ranch is located near the Napa/Sonoma county line and thus uniquely affords easy access and touring of both valleys. We are 15 minutes from the corner of Highway 12 and Calistoga Rd in the Sonoma Valley or just under 15 minutes from the center of St Helena in the Napa Valley. From the Ranch you can drop down to the center of either valley, approaching your destinations from the “side” thus avoiding the encumbered main valley north/south traffic. We are 2 hours from San Francisco, Oakland and Sacramento. There is an airport in Santa Rosa, 40 min from the house; several commuter flights per day from Seattle, San Diego and LA.

The house is located off of a mile and a half one lane winding, gravel and dirt road.

Sleeping options:

We can convert the Media Room to become an 8th bedroom. A large space, yet this is not a traditional bedroom, does not have closets,or AC but has large ceiling fan and additional fans can be added. Does include full private bath. Has 3 twin beds with option for an additional king. When set up with optional king mattress, the majority of theater seating is eliminated, then this room no longer functions as a media room for other guests. Obviously accommodating a group of couples vs a group of singles a different set up. There are a variety of daybeds/trundles on property; fees can apply for additional guests, linens and or set ups, please inquire for full details.

Culinary options galore:

We are pleased to have a myriad offering of culinary and wine services for our guests. We are fortunate to have the renowned wine country chef John Ash and his staff managing our culinary offerings. Many believe John to be the “Father of Wine Country Cuisine”. The sky is the limit for culinary events or classes, winery tours or private tastings, or any scale of private dining or catering that John and his staff can arrange to meet your preferences.

About the Owner

I am interior designer trained in both the US and France. I totally gutted and rebuilt this farm house, making sure it retained the character of rural wine country living but included all the comforts of a brand new home. Because my background is specifically in hospitality design, I think you will find that I have done well to anticipate the guests' needs as they come to the house for profound rest and relaxation as well as to partake of the wonders of both the Sonoma and Napa wine country region.

Guestbook comments from the owner

WHOA! Talk about an IDEAL house! I had the opportunity to visit the Ranch Above St. Helena not long ago and was stunned by the enormity of this place! 70 acres total! The drive along St Helena road was an experience in itself. If you’re driving from the Napa Valley side, you will pass privately owned wineries, mammoth redwoods, ferns, ponds, creeks and an iconic looking rock that resembles a Polynesian Tiki God. Just keep your eyes out and you’ll see what I mean.  During my stay, I encountered quite a variety of natural wildlife—turkeys, vultures, squirrels, foxes, even a peacock! The safari drive up the gravel road was equally thrilling. I cannot wait to mountain bike these spots! They feel secluded, but are not located too far away from downtown and other major cycling routes (such as Highway 29 or Silverado Trail).

I also happen to be an art history major, and was taken aback by the quality of the interiors. The eclectic style is fun, refreshing and incredibly romantic. Sofas, beds and benches are covered in paisley, floral and striped prints, linens and furs. As soon as you enter the doorway, you are surrounded by beautiful objets d’arte: Grecian busts, prism chandeliers, rustic shutters, Aubusson carpets, French garden pillars, Rococo mirrors and an intriguing collection of shells and books.

On a separate morning, I even decided to host a tea using a rented set of Noritake China. They have quite a selection that you can rent including linens and other decorative accessories. With the caretaker’s assistance, we played harpsichord music through the Sonos music system. Later, we moved to the outside to enjoy the wisteria and flower gardens. My girlfriends and I felt as if we had become characters straight out of a Jane Austen novel. We all dawned Kentucky Derby hats, sundresses and pearl necklaces. Definitely had a lot of fun playing a game of Bocci in the back while drinking wine and Mint Juleps. It was both wonderful and rare to find a house that has the ability to satisfy my unique party themes!

Great home for a big group!

  • 5 of 5
We spent a wonderful long weekend at The Ranch Above. We had a group of 12 people and the place was perfect. Each bedroom had it's own bathroom which was perfect since not everyone in the group knew each other. The guest house was amazing with two large, open, private bedrooms. The views were great. The only downfall was that we weren't expecting to be in the middle of the woods, we thought we would be able to explore the property a little bit more. The drive up to the house was a little scary in the fog and the bus we had picking us up was really too big to get up the road but the bus company fixed that the second day by bringing a smaller bus. We were glad to have the owners help us book the travel since we didn't know how small and windy the road was to get up to the house. They also recommended an amazing chef who came in to cook a birthday meal for us. Overall it was an amazing weekend and I would recommend the house to anyone looking for a comfortable space and a relaxing getaway. I can't wait to go back!

Company Off-site

  • 5 of 5
I had the job of finding a home for a group of 10 co-workers to spend 3 days on an off-site. This location was great for these purposes - each of us had our own beds, only 3 people had to share a room, there were many large seating areas, a great kitchen for group cooking, a beautiful pool area with a fire pit and grill, and stunning views. We got a lot done and spent quality time with each other in such a remote location. The wifi was a little iffy, but was expected at this location and with 10 people trying to use it at once. The media room was perfect for a rainy day movie showing, and the pool deck was perfect for yoga/meditation - we had an instructor come up. I was very satisfied with the caretaker's accessibility.

Amazing Wine Country Home for Large Groups

  • 5 of 5
I had the job of finding a rental home for a group of 8 couples for our wine country trip. Fortunately I had rented from this owner before and she let me know about her new property. This place is fantastic. The views are amazing from the home and the observation deck above. We enjoy cooking our own meals and the gourmet kitchen was perfect- huge range, multiple fridges, even a Vitamix. There is also a large DCS gas grill which we were able to use as well. The rooms are comfortable, each with it's own bath, and the layout is perfect for a large group. We used the outdoor fire pit nightly as well. It was too cold to swim, but the pool was great to look at. Access to the wine country, both Napa and Sonoma, was pretty quick, in spite of the mountain road and driveway. Beautiful morning hikes as well. All in all, we couldn't have been happier and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Exquisite property

  • 5 of 5
As beautiful as the pictures of this property are, they just don't do it justice. The home, the setting and the views are stunning. The owner Blair and Nicole, her manager, made every effort to make us comfortable and feel welcome. My friends surprised me with dinner the first night provided by Napa Valley Crust (www.napavalleycrust.com)They came up to the house with their food truck/wood burning pizza oven and cooked us delicious fresh pizzas, oysters, salad & appetizers. They were so friendly and fun and I would highly recommend them. Nicole recommended Chef Richard Perot to us for another meal at the house. Chef Perot was delightful and very talented. We had a fresh fall BBQ menu and he and his staff came early, prepared the meal, the tables and served us a fabulous dinner. They cleaned up and packed all the left overs for us to enjoy. I Highly recommend him. (www.chefperot.com) We ate at a fancy restaurant one night as well, but if we had it to do all over again, we would have all the dinners at the house. The cozy beautiful atmosphere just can't be beat. The dining room, kitchen, living room, media room and outdoor space is so perfect for large groups. We had so much fun just hanging out and laughing and talking. We enjoyed the fire pit at night, the views of the sunrise and sunset at the summitt deck. The only issue we had was with our driver who had not scoped the property ahead of time and could not get her vehicle up to the top to pick us up. Blair and Nicole work with drivers on a regular basis and have many companies that can easily make it up with appropriate vehicles. I would recommend working with them to arrange transport or making sure the company has scoped the property ahead of time. This truly is a 5 star property. It's not just a place to stay, it's very much a part of your vacation. ENJOY IT!:)

Private and Classy

  • 4 of 5
The Ranch Above is a stunning and comfortable retreat for a large group. While it takes a bit to get there, including over a mile of steep gravel road, it's worth the drive. If you go, leave time to just hang out there, don't spend all your time down in the valley. Views and privacy are wonderful. However, the pool was not heated so non-summer swimming isn't really an option.

Owner's Response: The pool will have solar heat by the spring. As it is a vanishing edge design, it cannot have a cover; this precludes gas heat. Solar heat will extend the swimming by about 1 month in spring and fall which should mean from mid may to mid oct. Much beyond those dates, the solar cannot overcome the cold nights we have in this part of the country. Normally the pool would be warm in early Oct but we have had an unusual cool and wet Oct. Bad for the grapes as well!!

birthday getaway

  • 5 of 5
My friends and I stayed at the Ranch Above for four nights to celebrate my birthday, and had a fabulous time. The house is beautiful and we had plenty of room for all guests. Probably could have fit more, but had a couple of last minute cancellations, so we were very comfortable. We spent our first night sipping wine and enjoying each others company around the fire pit. Nicole was fantastic, helping us with casual food deliveries on Wed. and Thurs., and bringing the fabulous Chef Perot in to cook for us Friday and Saturday. She set up transportation for us to the wineries of our choice, so no one had to worry about navigating the road after wine consumption. The directions to the house may seem a little complicated at first glance, but it was actually not that tough. Come in from the Santa Rosa side if you can, but coming from St. Helena was fine. Our only wish was that the pool was heated, as even after days of over 90 degree heat the pool was icy. I highly recommend the Ranch Above.

Owner's Response: Hello Sally,

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our property; we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. It was truly a pleasure to have you and your guests at the property.

Many guests have desired a heated pool so we are moving forward with solar heating, which should be available by next spring. Normally the pool would be warm in early Oct but we have had an unusual cool and wet fall. Bad for the grapes as well!!

We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back for a nurture stay in the wine country!

Cheers!

Location

From the Owner

I have been an interior designer all my professional life and am honestly consumed by the creative process. That said, I am always striving to refine the environments I create. For me that refinement means bringing the beholder closer to nature and their own creative process - to both uplift the inhabitant with the level of aesthetic musicality I provide, but of equal import, to maximize one's sense of relaxation. In my experience a relaxed mind is a creative (or playful) mind. What could be better or more important to life on this planet? I am ever amazed by the splendor of this region and I hope to provide environments that make this fact more available and deeply appreciable. Come meet the fox and bobcat and all their cohorts that roam on this ranch - may they cause you to pause and rejoice in the wonder of life.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Sonoma County/Santa Rosa at 15 Miles Car: necessary

EXCEPTIONAL ACCESS TO BOTH COUNTIES / WINERIES. The elevated yet central location of this property affords maximum privacy yet easy access to not one but both Wine Country valleys. There are a bounty of boutique wineries in the immediate vicinity. We provide more info on wineries and vineyards at blairspangler.com. Traffic especially in Napa county has become very problematic on weekends. With one 2 lane country road the only north/south option, traffic slows to a crawl from 10am to 7 pm in high season. From the Ranch you can drop down to the center of either valley, approaching your destinations from the “side” thus avoiding the encumbered main valley north/south traffic.

RURAL LOCATION: The drive up to the ranch is spectacular but curvy. The driveway is a gravel rd of one mile - all weather passable; I zip up it in my prius with ease. But it is wise to plan ahead as a run to the grocery store is a 1/2 hour plus errand. We are happy to assist with stocking the house and/or arranging drivers etc. The caretaker is often available to run errands for a minor fee.

WARM NIGHTS, UNIQUE WEATHER DUE TO ELEVATION: After purchasing this one-of-a-kind location, I was surpriseD to learn how unique the weather is here. This is basically a state of the art “green” structure with superb insulation, climate control etc. For cooler periods we have radiant floor heat throughout which is so comfortable.

We are 2 hours from San Francisco, Oakland and Sacramento. There is an airport in Santa Rosa, 40 min from the house; several commuter flights per day from Seattle, San Diego and LA.

Amenities

From the Owner

The sheer size of this property is its fundamental uniqueness and prowess. The views and sense of vastness afforded by its ridge-top location, above both the Napa and Sonoma valleys, fills one with a sense of the magic of this geography and the profundity of the time honored agricultural and culinary traditions thriving in the northern California wine country - (like no where else this side of the atlantic or pacific actually). Nature is all but undisturbed and thus busily flourishing. I have lived in numerous other areas of both Napa and Sonoma counties, but until I moved here in mid 2012, I had no idea such an undisturbed sense of the wild still existed in this part of the world. The wildlife is abundant and with that comes a sense of profound stillness encouraging one to truly disconnect from the pressures and pace of our everyday world. A place to 'get back to your roots' and consider what life is essentially about; where you have been and where you want to go. Halcyon days await.....Come kiss the stars.
