1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 3

Renovated barn sits just over the state line from the Berkshires, nestled on ten acres of the rolling hills of glorious Columbia County. It overlooks 1000 acres of Audubon Sanctuary and a crystal clear babbling stream which runs about 9 months of the year. We are on a lovely road for walking with beautiful views of the Taconic Ridge. The cottage is perfect for a person or couple who needs a get-a-way with no distractions unless they want them. It's a multi-level open plan cottage with original 1904 beams. Downstairs is an entry room, bath, wood-burning stove, and a living room/dining area with a modern kitchen. Upstairs is a bedroom with a Queen sized bed and a study/den that includes a 2' x 8' desk top/work surface and a daybed. The study area has a large window opening to the stream, a native meadow and woods. All systems are new and the kitchen is fully equipped.

The barn also faces our flower and organic vegetable garden with a little orchard beyond. Beyond the pine trees, set in the meadow, is a 16' by 36' pool surrounded by hydrangea and plantings.

Hillsdale bridges the Bershires and the Hudson Valley. We are conveniently located one mile from the hamlet with its IGA, wine shop, gift shops, diner, fine restaurant, amazing library and the beautiful 400 acre Roe Jan Park. We are four miles from Catamount skiing. The cottage is a short drive from three great small towns. Ten miles east you'll find the Berkshire town of Great Barrington with desirable shopping, dining and entertainment. Heading west, we are 15 miles from the dynamic town of Hudson with antiques, galleries, restaurants and Club Helsinki. Millerton is 17 miles south. The amount of first-rate activity in this rural setting is astounding. Not only are there extraordinary arts, dining and shopping but also the great outdoors - trails, fishing, biking, Bash Bish Falls, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail and climbing. Cultural highlights include Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood, Barrington Stage Theater, Berkshire Theater Festival, Shakespeare and Co., Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and many museums. (Note: Sign on cottage is a family heirloom, not a commercial venture.)

Ten stars plus! Gorgeous. Well tended to. Amazingly situated, clean pool. Inspired garden. Lovely hosts who are friendly/helpful to check you in:). My husband and I returned from our long weekend stay at the barn and already look forward to returning. What a superbly created wonderland of taste, beauty and comfort! Great walks to take in each direction.
PS One of our many favorite things was hearing the gently gurgling creek right outside the main bedroom window as we fell asleep.

Write a book.

There's one major constant for anyone attempting to write in New York City. Everything gets in the way. So, sight unseen, desperate for quiet and the luxury of getting through the day at one's own pace, I pushed a few buttons and i got lucky. A picturesque setting complete with babbling brook just below my picture window offered a perfect metaphor: braincells freed from gridlock. And the convenience of eateries -- a classic diner and a fab restaurant are minutes away. In short, the algorithm adds up: I got a lot of writing done.

Snowy week in the Berkshires

  • 5 of 5
I spent a week at the barn and it is as bright and spacious as the pictures indicate and the views from the windows are beautiful. I did a lot of local hiking and snowshoeing, as well as on the property where I could watch the deer. I was happy to find my favorite Berkshires restaurant, John Andrews, was only a few miles down the road. Claudia and John were very warm and helpful. I will definitely be coming back.

Heaven in the Berkshires

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at this blissful cottage for two weeks in late August early September of 2013 and again in October 2013 for a week. It is exactly as advertised with very comfortable furniture, a modern and efficient kitchen, a cozy queen sized bed and an awesome view from the desk upstairs looking out to the meadow with deer munching on apple trees. The owners, Claudia and John, are lovely and very accommodating people and sharing the pool worked out great. The garden is glorious and, as artists, we both painted in several areas on the extremely scenic property. The cottage is a stone's throw to Great Barrington, a beautiful New England town with triplex movie theatre and lots of great restaurants. It's also close to Lennox, Shakespeare and Tanglewood. I recommended the property to a writer friend of mine and she has since rented the place herself as the "perfect" writing retreat and will rent again this winter and spring. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Perfect Retreat!

  • 5 of 5
I came to the cottage to get some writing done on my book. I was overstressed, overworked, and sorely in need of a quiet refuge in which to write. I was overjoyed with my entire stay! Not only is the cottage charming, warm, comfortable and inviting (even in the gloom of winter), but it was absolutely perfect for getting quality work done. The huge picture window overlooking a running stream through the woods is placed right over a custom-made wall-to-wall desk (with plenty of outlets). It made me feel as lucky as Thoreau. With the added benefit of having very reliable Wi-Fi and cellular service.

I not only got more than I expected to get done on my book, but I had a wonderful, relaxing time as well. The kitchen was well-stocked with all the dishes and equipment I needed to eat in when I wanted, and I loved having the option of the wood-burning stove (though it was plenty warm enough without it when I was there). The cottage felt very roomy, and there are some very nice touches, such as the granite sink in the bathroom, overhead fan and air conditioning, new hardwood floors throughout, inviting artwork on the walls, very tasteful decorating, nice, big windows that look out over the woods, and plenty of places to put your stuff and clothes. The bed was very comfortable and between that and the sound of the brook outside, I got some of the most restful sleep I've gotten in ages.

The owners were so welcoming and helpful, and their Tibetan Terrier was adorable. I also loved that it felt so completely secluded, yet was conveniently located to so much else going on. The Hillsdale Diner is only about a mile away and is great for some local ambience and well-priced meals. I'm really looking forward to returning next time with my husband, just for a romantic getaway.
