About the Owner

Your hosts are Gary and Mayumi. Mayumi is a professor of music psychology at Hokkaido University in Japan and we divide our time between Japan and Seattle. Gary built the building, which won an award for the best new residential building in Washington State in 2008. Unfortunately that was a bad year to try to sell high-end green built condos (or anything). Gary has recovered from our developer's gamble and now works as a property manager for Windermere. We would prefer to keep our separate lock-off unit full of our books but your stay sure helps pay for our airfare. If you would like to learn more about our building please visit:

Save your money

  • 1 of 5
We arrived to our vacation rental to find this property in very poor condition. The bed linens looked and smelled foul , as they were clearly unsanitary. We opened the mini refrigerator to put our perishables in, and the overwhelming stench was unbearable to the point of nausea. After contacting the owner for some assistance or compensation he responded with a poor excuse, there is nothing wrong with this unit, end of story. Save your money and keep looking around, as the place doesn't even come close to the pictures advertised here. We got burned this time, as we moved out after 1 night , no compensation here. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

Owner's Response: VRBO owners are not hotels. I have a minimum stay and a 30-day cancellation policy. This guest obviously had changed plans. I met them on Friday night and they said everything was fine. The next morning they called and said they wanted to "check out." When I explained to them that I do not give refunds they claimed that the room wasn't as promised. The excuse they gave was that the refrigerator "smells like shit." This is a micro-fridge that is only 4 months old. I checked it and I did not smell anything.

I immediately called VRBO and was advised that I did nothing wrong, but I did do something wrong, I should have asked for them to request the cancelation in writing then I could have had this malicious review stricken from the record. Please read the other reviews.

This is from the VRBO website:
What do I do if a traveler threatens me with a negative review in order to receive compensation?

If the threat was sent via email, you must include the complete email string and all email headers.

Cute Studio

We booked this place for a long weekend visit to the Seattle area. It is perfect for those wanting to stay in the Capitol hill area, walking distance to everything you need. Gary was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommend this studio!!

Beautiful Neighborhood

  • 4 of 5
This place has all the beautiful amenities that are mentioned. It was a warm time in Seattle and there was no A/C or even a fan. The only way to get somewhat cool was to leave the sliding door that opens to the street open. No booklet with contact information or what to do when leaving as they said there would be. Otherwise very enjoyable in a beautiful neighborhood.

Very nice area and easy transit to downtown

  • 4 of 5
We stayed here for a week and really enjoyed the condo during our 6 day stay. We wanted something that was small and inexpensive as we were looking merely for a place to crash at night before continuing our adventures downtown each day. The unit was easy to find and very clean. The first 5 days our shower had almost no pressure and we would have to let the water run for about 10 minutes prior to getting in because the water wouldn't heat. For some reason once the owners (who own the adjacent home) got home on day 5, we had immediate pressure and heat. Not sure if it's somehow hooked up to their main line in the house but it was kind of a bummer to have to work around.
The TV had NetFlix, the bedding was very comfy, and there was a mini fridge and sink available as well. The unit did not seem to have A/C (or at least controllable by the renter) and so we resorted to buying a fan at Target for the stay as it was very hot that week. There is almost no noise on this quaint street so getting sleep isn't an issue. The communication with the owner was pretty good, a few discrepancies (no checkout time on the instructions we were given) but overall an easy stay. I would highly recommend bringing a fan if you are here during the summer months. Overall I would recommend this condo if you are looking for a clean bed at a good price and don't mind taking the bus to town every day (around 20 minutes to downtown, and $4.50 round trip).

Great for a short stay

  • 4 of 5
This unit was great for a short business trip. The location is cozy and quiet, but it's within walking distance of many amenities in Capitol Hill and steps away from a bus that takes you downtown in ~15min. Gary was helpful and quick to respond to questions before and during my stay. I'd definitely stay here again for another short trip, and I'd recommend it for anyone who doesn't need to use a stove.
