About the Owner

Our brother and sister in law moved to Costa Rica about 9 years ago. They kept encouraging us to visit and finally, in 2012, we were able to come to Esterillos Oeste for 10 days. We have traveled to many countries and stayed in resorts. Nothing prepared us for the unforgettable experience of staying in this quaint fishing village! We walked to the beach, to the grocery store, to restaurants, and to local bars. We went zip lining, on a cruise to Tortuga Island, and horseback riding. The best, and most interesting, thing about our stay is that we did not want to go home. Period. We loved the people and the relaxed way of life. We loved the variety of things to do close by. We had never felt this way about any of our travel destinations before and we decided right then to make our goal to retire in this village!

We live in Pennsylvania and started coming to Esterillos Oeste for a month during our coldest weather. We brought family and groups of friends to share this unique experience. Everyone had a wonderful time and plan to come back. Perhaps we caught the Pura Vida fever but we never wanted to be anywhere else!

Great vacation!

My family stayed here and had a wonderful time. We spent a lot of time in the pool and at the beach. We loved seeing the macaws fly over the house every day. We also saw a sloth.

The house is located near the end of a quiet road so there isn't much traffic. There are several bedrooms to choose from and even one downstairs so my mother-in-law didn't have to climb the stairs. We loved grilling outside but we also enjoyed eating out on those nights we were too tired to cook. Los Almendros has wonderful food!

The most difficult decision we had all week was whether to go swimming in the pool first or the ocean first. It was nice being able to boogie board right out front of the house.

When we were making our reservations the property managers were very helpful and answered all our questions. They helped us make reservations to go on the zipline and horseback riding. We also took a boat to Tortuga Island one day that was a lot of fun. One day the guys went fishing with a local fisherman and caught fish for our dinner. We were able to grill it on the BBQ and it was delicious!

We will definitely be back with the rest of our family. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Location

From the Owner

We had been looking at this home every time we came down for a visit. We loved the original features such as the arched shuttered windows. Casa Trasmallo had been owned by a famous writer from San Jose. He had been an ambassador to the United States and was an honorary Fellow at Columbia University. He brought his family to this beach home during the 1980's and after his death his family continued to use the house as a favorite getaway. It was named Trasmallo after the net which was used by local fishermen. We think of the name as a special type of net that brings people of all walks of life into its shelter.

Amenities

From the Owner

I remember walking by this house one day and watched as children splashed in the pool, someone was cooking on the bar-b-que and a few were lazily swinging in hammocks under the rancho. I thought of my own family and I could see us all there enjoying our day. We loved the arches on the covered front porch and the shutters in the arched windows. What we loved the most was the serenity and beauty of the gardens and outdoor spaces. It seemed that everything about it said 'relax'. We knew this was the perfect place for us.
