This residence is perfectly situated at the foot of Telegraph Hill and central North Beach. It is 2 blocks to the heart of North Beach, 'Washington Square', which is Little Italy and showcases the many local shops, restaurants, coffee houses etc. The church that faces Washington Square Park is famous as the site where Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were married in 1954. It is a short walk to Coit Tower, the Embarcadero along the Bay, the home to the America's Cup staging ground, Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 where you can catch Ferry's to Alcatraz, Sausalito and Angel Island. Also, easy access to local transportation which can take you anywhere in the City in approx. 15 minutes. You can see and also walk within 10 minutes to the 'Crooked Street' which is world famous. China Town is adjacent to Little Italy and therefore also a short walk. No better place to stay in SF and enjoy all it has to offer.

Please see article featuring North Beach published by the San Francisco Chronicle below under 'Other Activities'.

Great apartment in SF

  • 5 of 5
This apartment is great. Wonderful views of the Golden Gate and of Lombard Street. A great neighborhood -- good enough for Joe DiMaggio to marry Marilyn. The landlord makes it all very easy. I locked myself and he showed up 10 minutes later, calm and easy. The online booking works. It's got a bunch of steps but if you don't like hills, go to LA.

Upper Beautiful View Apt-Hrt of North Beach/Telegraph Hill -Central to Everythin

  • 5 of 5
Great location in San Francisco with a nice view of Lombard Street. We were able to walk to numerous popular neighborhoods like Fisherman's Wharf and Telegraph Hill etc. I'm very picky about cleanliness and upkeep and I extremely satisfied with the apartment! Plenty of extra towels and extra pillows and blanket for those chilly San Francisco evenings. It was a bit of a tight fit for our family of 5, with 3 teenagers (especially with bathroom conflicts), but we more than made it work for our short stay. Not recommended for anyone with physical disabilities due to the number of steps to get to the apartment but we had no problems with it. Very happy with our stay!!!

Excellent, great location

  • 5 of 5
The appartment is perfectly situated, very nice street (closed to lombard, coit tower, pier 39, all restaurants of little Italy by feet), very nice small houses, close to every things. It was very clean, confortable beds (we were 5, so used the couch), very pleasant (wooden floor) and with a beautiful view. A perfect stay !

Awesome

The apartment was very clean and excellently done up. It is located in the middle of lots of interesting places and the neighborhood is very quiet. Coit Tower, Lombard Street, Cable Car Station etc are walking distances away.
We loved it.

Great Location : Great Apartment

  • 5 of 5
Great location for a downtown SF experience. Excellent alternative to a hotel off Union Square if you want more of a neighborhood / local experience but still close enough to touristy things. I would recommend adding a sitting chair in the living area. We opened the couch into a third bed and never closed it during our short stay. Another chair would have made it a bit more comfy. All-in-all great apartment; clean, nice view.

Location

From the Owner

This property is as charming as it gets with only two properties on the alley and given its proximity to everything the area has to offer at your door step, it is a wonderful place to be while seeing all that SF has to offer. There are wonderful views from the kitchen and upstairs living room.

Activity and Interests

Car: not necessary

Published by the San Francisco Chronicle:

North Beach is that rare place - a neighborhood that manages to be a perennial hit with tourists, yet remains beloved by San Franciscans. It's best known as San Francisco's Little Italy, with its high density of check-clothed ristorantes, caffes and Old World delicatessens. It's also a popular pilgrimage for fans of the Beat movement seeking the old haunts of Kerouac and Ginsberg. However, North Beach is no relic as it has much to offer beyond pasta and poetry.

This vital neighborhood is home to some of the liveliest nightclubs and bars in town. Small boutiques carrying handmade clothing and imported goods dot the streets, particularly on upper Grant Avenue. Though Italian restaurants appear to dominate the dining scene, there are plenty of other good spots to try once you've had your fill of lasagna, with menus featuring Japanese, French and contemporary fusion cuisine. City Lights, original publisher of Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl,' is still one of the best bookstores in San Francisco, and founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti can sometimes be seen strolling the neighborhood.

Part of the old Barbary Coast, North Beach is steeped in the past - Grant Avenue itself is the oldest street in San Francisco. In the early days, North Point docks served as a gateway for immigrants from South America, Europe and the Australian penal colonies. It wasn't until the late 1800s that thousands of Italians made the area their stronghold and turned it into the local Latin Quarter. The Italian-American community can also be credited in part with protecting the neighborhood against the fire that swept the city after the 1906 earthquake. According to legend, some enterprising residents cracked open the barrels of red wine in their cellars and saved their houses by draping them with wine-soaked blankets. In more recent history, North Beach has produced some notable people, including baseball's great, Joe DiMaggio, who moved there at the age of one and grew up in a flat at Valparaiso and Taylor. Also, former San Francisco mayor Joseph Alioto was born in North Beach.

Whether prowling for historic landmarks, sampling house-roasted espressos, shopping, clubbing or chowing down, you'll find North Beach has plenty to offer for both a leisurely afternoon visit and a night on the town. Take a detour off the main drag of Columbus and you're likely to run across some unexpected treasure of a shop, restaurant or spectacular view that only this San Francisco gem-of-a-neighborhood could offer.
