The Blue Heron was a wonderful place for a long-dreamed of family gathering. We hoped it would be as great as it was described and we were certainly not disappointed. It was beautiful and had everything we needed and the location between Mendocino and Fort Bragg allowed us to enjoy all the activities we had planned. The Blue Heron was a perfect place for the gathering of our families and the making of wonderful memories in this lovely home by the sea.

Misleading Ad re: OceanViews

  • 2 of 5
We stayed here for a few days in early January, and were extremely disappointed at what was claimed to be the "ocean views". The house looks directly into tree's and other homes; I believe the picture was taken with the telescope thats in the ad. If you are looking to sit inside and stare at the ocean, this is not the house for you. However, it is a great open floor plan which is good for kids. I had read a review about how the carpets and some furniture need to be cleaned, and this is still the case, as they are fairly dirty. However, I would have been fine with that had the views been what we had anticipated. The town of Mendocino is extremely close, which was great - as it's a wonderful place to visit.

A perfect choice for a Mendocino vacation

  • 5 of 5
My family and I highly recommend Blue Heron. We were a party of five adults, with a sixth joining us for two nights of our one-week stay, and Blue Heron offered everything we needed to have a wonderful time together. The house is even larger and more beautiful than the pictures indicate. For instance, there is a large dining room table in the living area at which we could work on a big puzzle at one end and sit together for meals at the other. There was also seating at the island in the kitchen area for more casual chatting over our morning coffee. The kitchen is beautifully appointed and organized, so many of us could comfortably cook together (hint: Safeway in Fort Bragg is close and excellent for groceries). Another huge plus was the ample leisure seating—there were sofas in cozy areas, a huge sofa in front of the picture windows, and a sofa near the fire. Everyone always had a place to sprawl and read or talk together. My daughter and her husband enjoyed their private bath and bedroom; my husband and I loved the master suite with its own big windows and balcony access, a walk-in closet, and a bathroom that included a Jacuzzi and gas fireplace! My bachelor son claimed the downstairs bedroom and bathroom. And my six-foot plus brother claimed that he was perfectly comfortable on one of the two (full) futons in the game room for the two nights when he came to stay with us. Another plus was the hot tub, wonderful for relaxing in the evening while watching the sunset. Of course, Blue Heron is convenient to everything. We loved Russian Gulch, which is right next door. In fact, on the last morning, my husband went there for a fast goodbye to its magnificent landscape and ocean views and saw not one but two whales breech! A grand conclusion to a grand vacation. Thank you, Saundra and Eric. And thank you for your very prompt responses to our few questions, before, during, and after our stay.

Fabulous find

  • 5 of 5
It's not easy to find a house that will comfortably hold 10 people but Blue Heron did it with room to spare!
We had a wonderful 3 days on the coast with unexpectedly beautiful sunny weather. The house was well appointed and equipped with everything we needed. Saundra, the owner, was great at communicating with me each step of the way as we set the rental up. I highly recommend this rental for large groups, even when their related!

Beautiful Home and View of the Ocean

  • 3 of 5
My siblings and our spouses come together for an annual get-a-way in the Fall. Mendocino was our location of choice and we found the Blue Heron to be a lovely setting. The house is a beautiful floor plan and very spacious. We had an average experience for the following reasons: 1) The bathrooms and bedding were very clean, however the carpets and rugs throughout the house are in desperate need of cleaning. The tile and hardwood floors needed to be swept and cleaned, and the spectacular window looking out onto the ocean was full of finger, hand, and nose prints; 2) There were 6 of us sharing the home which was noted in the rental contact. There were plenty of towels, however a shortage of wash cloths. I contacted the owner to ask that the cleaning service provide additional wash cloths. I was told that they had replaced hundreds of wash cloths throughout the season and because it was end of season, they had stopped replenishing them. I found this response very odd as I view linens and towels a basic service and a part of running a business. I guess the moral of this story is to rent this property at the beginning of the season!

The house is spectacular- it just needs some TLC. Perhaps the owners should change cleaning and maintenance service- they're certainly not getting their monies worth. As for the basic amenities, if the owner is not going to provide then they need to disclose in the contract so renters are aware. They disclosed no facial soap was provided so we were prepared. Based upon our experience we will not return to the Blue Heron in the Fall.

Owner's Response: Dear Kristi S.,

Thank you for your feedback. We strive to provide the best for our valued guests and are sorry that your experience was anything less.

Based on your comments we made the following changes:
- We have increased our washcloth supply.
- We met with our cleaning crew and have been assured that cleaning will not be an issue moving forward.

We hope you will reconsider staying in our home in the future. However, if this is not an option we are happy to recommend other lovely locations in the area. We endeavor to do our best and sincerely welcome your feedback.
