House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 6 Sleeps

Las Tunas is a comfortable home owned by the creators of the leading tourist guide to the state

of Yucatan "Yucatan Today." Check the website.

IMPORTANT INFO: To clear up a lot of confusion about safety issues in Mexico, let me say that the problems are along the northern border of Mexico...some 1200 miles away. Yucatan is known for being a safe, tranquil, peaceful area andTelchac Puerto a quiet, remote fishing village. This is like being in Kansas if there were problems in Los Angeles.... far away. So.... take advantage and come to Yucatan!

Las Tunas home in nestled in amongst some 300 coconut trees and sits on a large, spacious beach front property on the Gulf of Mexico. We sit apart from other homes - we have no wall-to-wall neighbors. Set off the beach you will have a wonderful view of the pool, dune and Gulf of Mexico. This is not a stark rental property, this is our home with sofas, chairs and beds that are comfortable!!

Telchac Puerto is known for being small, slow and quiet where you

will find the locals very friendly. Being such a small village, you

will feel at home quickly, get to know the shop keepers and them you.

The beaches are wide, sandy and great for walking. They are not

crowded with fishing boats, other tourists, break water sticks

every twenty feet and wall-to-wall houses like in Chicxulub and

Progreso. Telchac Puerto is for people looking for a place that is

more private and uncrowded.

Swimming is good all yearlong. The water is safe, clean Gulf water

with no rocks, currents or ebb tides. It is very swimmer friendly.

We have ceiling fans throughout our home and AC in the bedrooms, for an additional cost.

There is an international airport in Merida, with direct flights

from Houston, Miami and Mexico City. It can be cheaper to fly into

Cancun, rent a car there and drive over - about four hours.

Having a car will make your stay much more enjoyable.

Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5
Las Tunas is a wonderfully relaxing place to stay. My two boys and I have just returned from a 10 day stay and our first visit to the Yucatan. Telchac Puerto is a quiet spot but perfectly located to visit all the major sites in the Yucatan. The house has everything you need for the perfect vacation, great pool and less than a minute stroll down to the ocean.

María Elena and her boys keep everything well maintained and the way the house has been built provides a great cooling breeze from the beach all day and night.

If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing, perfect spot you can't go wrong with selecting Las Tunas. Judy, the owner, is really easy to work with and answered every question that we had. She connected us with some of the expats in the area and we had a couple of great evenings in the Casa Del Mar bar. Make sure you pop in to see Briggette and Daren who will make you feel very welcome.

Two spectacular weeks in Mexico

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time and would highly recommend this villa. It was a pleasure booking and communicating with Judy. We were greeted by Maria Elena who showed us around and cooked us a lentil potage for dinner. What a wonderful welcome after our long plane ride. The directions were very clear to get to. Las Tunas was everything we needed for our two week stay with the furnished terrace, bbq, hammocks, pool and beach. We especially enjoyed the terrace, enjoying our morning coffee and evening drinks. We found the total experience quiet and relaxing, certainly out of the tourist "rat race". Dining in Telchac Puerto was great, so relaxed and authentic. The restaurants are not fancy but the meals and the seafood always fresh from the ocean and at very modest prices. The area is fascinating. Along the beach road we saw sea salt being harvested and lots of Flamingos and wildlife.
Maria Elena was fabulous. She cooked us meals when we wanted to eat in, and provided us all the information we needed to go into town or exploring. She was wonderful at keeping the whole property tidy and clean.
Las Tunas was everything that we expected and more.

Activity and Interests

Miles of wide beaches, an unobstructed view of the Gulf of Mexico,

varied seashells, the sounds of the birds, (flamingos, pelicans,

ducks, osprey, eagles, kingfisher, etc.), the peace, tranquility and

quietness that reign, and the fact that the house is near enough to

other attractions (Mayan ruins, colonial cities) but far enough way

to feel remote.

Draw backs:

No razzle dazzle, no discos, no neon signs, no traffic, no wild

night life, no fine dining, no shopping malls or plazas, no hoards

of tourists. Las Tunas is for people who are looking to get away

from it all and have a “Mexican experience.” This is not a tourist

trap destination. If you do want all the razzle-dazzle above, check

out Cancun, Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya.

How you'd spend your free time:

Reading, sun bathing, strolling on the beach, bird watching,

collecting shells, relaxing in the pool, taking siestas in a

hammock, going to the local harbor to buy fresh fish, going to the

village market for produce, trying Yucatecan food that is sold

cheaply, practicing your Spanish with the caretaker, visiting the

nearby Mayan pyramids of X-Cambo (10 mins. from the house) or

Chichen Itza (1.5 hrs.), Dzibichaltun (45 mins), Uxmal (1.5

hour), the colonial city of Merida (1 hour), playing golf (45

minutes), driving the back sandy roads of the village investigating,

driving to the other nearby fishing villages, RELAXING.

There is an international airport in Merida with direct flights from

Houston, Miami and Mexico City. The Merida airport is one hour from

the house.

The village has a Main Plaza and tiny local market for fruits,

veggies and meat; there are shops for other staples, a bakery,

internet cafes, and several restaurants open for lunch (the main meal

in Mexico.) One of the charms of Las Tunas is that there is a village

just 3.5kms away for shopping and errands.

    Some comments we've received:
    Judy and Juan Manuel,
We had an absolutely wonderful time at Las Tunas! It felt so comfortable and spacious. Maria Elena couldn't have been a better caretaker. Everything she did for us was great, especially the pork and lentil stewandthelimonadathatshemade us. We tried toduplicateherlimonada, but to no success, so we asked her if she could make us some more. It was so good, that we asked her for her recipe – to try to make it ourselves at home. We know it won’t be as good as hers, but we’re sure it will impress our friends. In return, we left her a recipe for our sweet and sour chipotlesauceforcamarones. We made it while we were down there, and it really made the shrimp pop!
We didn't have the greatest weather but having the two hammocks available next to each otherinthepalapamadetherain less important. We could still read our books and talk to each other. We’ve never stayed at a house with two hammocks set up like that – it made all the difference in the rain. That said, if our only complaint was the weather being less than perfect, well it's not really a complaint.
We felt very safe and secure in your home. Being protected from the beach view by the lush vegetation was very comforting. We definitely slept more soundly than we have in prior years.
The coconut trees, the prickly pears, the coconut tree garden, the pool, thepalapawiththetwo hammocks next to one another, the pergola on the beach with the Adirondack chairs… what wasn’t to just love?
It was good to meet Juan Manuel. We were disappointed that we could not have met Judy. We have relied so heavily upon the Yucatan Today from our very first visit to the Yucatan six years ago
Some things you may note: Leigh’s mango smoothie fried the blender, so we replaced it with one with a metal component at the base. It is purple, but it kind of looks fun with the green tile.
Allinallwehada great and relaxing time. Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful home. We'd love to stay at Las Tunas next year! We'll be in touch.
    Bob and Leigh

    Hola Judy,
We will be leaving in about 45 minutes.
Thanks again to you and JM for having the vision to create Las Tunas!
    Dear Judy,
I wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful time at Las Tunas.
What a magical place. We were very, very happy there. We arrived back
in Houston this morning. One day a family hesitantly came up the
path asking if it was a hotel. They were looking for somewhere to rent
in August. They were very nice people and I offered to show them the
house. They absolutely loved the house.
    Thank you very much Judy.
    Hi there Judy.
The weather is bitter cold here in Alberta and the kids and I were
looking at Las Tunas pix to warm up!! I thought I'd share a few of
our favorites from around the house and the pool. We have such
beautiful memories and are so greatful we got to visit and stay at
your place. Hope all is well, looks like the calendar is filling
    Take care,
    Rayna Tupper
