Property Details

Updated: May 3, 2015
House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 6 Sleeps

Heron Now is a comfortable bayfront home located on St George

Island overlooking Apalachicola Bay. The large deck offers seabreezes and a private panoramic overlook of the bay and estuarine reserve. You have the same view from inside the house and even from the kitchen.

Heron Now has the best of both vacation worlds: the gulf coast

beaches and the beautiful bayside marsh. The spacious nationally ranked gulf

coast beach is only 1.5 blocks away via easy public access. There you can swim in the waves, fish the surf, or lounge among sand castles. Heron Now adjoins the bayside world of the Apalachicola National Estuarine Reserve which provides one mile of undeveloped bayshore waterfront to explore by foot or boat. The

Reserve is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Bring your canoes and kayaks(or rent locally) because there is bay access. Bring your fishing gear because the bay is full of sea trout, redfish, and mullet. Bring your camera and binoculars because every hike or paddle will bring a new discovery.

Another great stay

  • 5 of 5
We returned to Heron Now for the sixth consecutive year. Need I say more? No, but I will. We are so comfortable at this house that it really does become our home away from home. We enjoy the easy walks to the bay and the beach. The view of the tidal pond and bay is entertaining in itself. You never know what wildlife you may see. The house is well kept and clean. We never consider staying elsewhere on SGI. Looking forward to next year's visit!

What a great place!

  • 5 of 5
We are a family of four (20 month old and 7 week old) and we stayed at Heron Now for 2 weeks. It was absolutely perfect for our needs. We loved that we could access both sides of the island within minutes (walking) - if the wind was blowing one way we could just go to the sheltered side! The island is fantastic, so quiet with a beautiful beach. We bought seafood from the local seafood van every day and it was some of the best quality we'd ever eaten. Some days we'd travel to the mainland to have a look around. Apalachacola is a great little town about 15 minutes away. We downloaded the self guided historical walking tour which was really interesting, and had some delicious oysters at Oyster Boss.

The house itself was perfect for our needs - not too big but plenty of space and nice and warm. Our bed was comfortable, and there was a cot and high chair which was really useful. It was absolutely spotless when we turned up and the owner rang us on our first day to make sure we had everything we needed which was a lovely touch.

I would not hesitate to recommend Heron Now to anyone, but probably older couples and couples with kids especially, as the island is definitely a quiet place to relax, or let the children explore.

"Heron Now" The perfect island retreat!

"Heron Now" The perfect island retreat!
  • 5 of 5
Heron Now is the perfect island retreat, it is one of the few houses on the island where you can be close to the beach with an amazing view of the bay. There are very few locations on the island where you still have privacy, Heron Now affords the feel of seclusion with easy access to everything the island has to offer. Watching Herons, Egrets, and Eagles along with songbirds right off the deck daily gives the true feel of island life. The owner called our first day to ensure everything was to our expectations, and they most definitely were! He went out of his way to help us plan all details of the stay, and was a pleasure to work with. This is our second visit to Heron Now and will definitely not be our last! We have already had friends stay at Heron Now and were pleasantly pleased. We must recommend spending time at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Apalachicola Maritime Museum, they are both well worth your time.

Relaxing holdiay in a great location

  • 5 of 5
Our second time here and would certainly recommend it. It is a nice, clean and airy house in a quiet, private location with lovely views of the bay. The bay and gulf beaches and nature reserve are only a short walk away. We enjoyed leisurely breakfasts on the deck watching birds and other wildlife with the binoculars provided.

Coffee with the Bald Eagles

  • 4 of 5
Heron Now is a wonderful bayside getaway! Private, comfortable and a rental you will just immediately feel at home in. Saw Bald Eagles three of the days we were there; great horned owl sat in the pines one morning while we had our coffee (squirrel in the palmetto below was quite relieved and verbal once he left). The great room is open and with comfortable furnishings. Owner gave wonderful information on the home and area and an added plus is the home is environmentally friendly; down to offering recycling bins (love it) and info. We really hope to stay in this lovely home again. We have stayed on St. George for 30 some odd years; always on the beach but I'm a bayside fan now!

Nice, private location for home for good family getaway

  • 4 of 5
Our family enjoyed our time at Heron Now. As described on the website it is in a lovely private location on St. George Island. Good for family, great value for the price, not fancy. While there are other houses nearby there are many trees and it is also near a marsh, giving it much more space than most of the other homes we saw on the island. The kitchen is well stocked. The owner's guide to local attractions and recommended beach areas helped us hit the highlights. The beach is lovely and not crowded. Some of our highlights were seeing an otter playing in the marsh pond in view of the living room windows on the last day, also every night at dusk tree frogs and geckos started moving on to the windows to get the bugs attracted by the lights; our kids loved this! We saw interesting sea life every day. Locally I would recommend the ANERR nature center across the bridge from St. George and the Gulf Specimen Aquarium in Panacea, definitely worth the trip. Had a close up encounter with a sea turtle there. The water pressure at the house was great for nice, hot showers. You should be aware that if you tend to run warm I wouldn't recommend visiting in summer as the AC cannot be set below 74 degrees. Fans helped. Also, be aware that the third bedroom is a loft without a door that closes. Overall I would definitely recommend this property. The owner and local manager were both great to work with and helpful, the setting is lovely, and my kids and mother in law and husband and I had a great week.

Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed your time at Heron Now. Thanks for your lovely and detailed review.
Two clarifications for Homeaway readers. The third bedroom occupies the entire upper level living space. It is the master bedroom in that has it the second largest room in home, has its own bathroom , and a large step-in closet. With the open air contemporary styling of the house with high vaulted ceiling, the space does not have a door. But the configuration does allow for privacy. Secondly, if at any point,as a guest ,you are not comfortable in Heron Now, including the functioning of the AC, please contact me and I will address the issue immediately. The subsequent guest called me because the AC would not cool. Replacing a float switch on the air handler immediately solved the problem.
