Property Details

Updated: Apr 7, 2015
Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 6 (5 in beds, one on couch)

PETS are negotiable, please inquire! Please note: Holiday weekend (Memorial Day) prices are posted for groups of up to 4, add $30 per person per night for over 4 persons.

Charming bungalow on 1.5 acres, built in 1930, hard wood floors, all original cabinets and wood work. One bedroom has queen bed, second bedroom has queen and additional cot bed. The house is simple and charming, with lots of wood, lots of windows, nice rugs and old prints on the walls. Lovely sunsets from the living room windows.

LOTS of videos and DVDs, lots of books and especially lots of COOKBOOKS!

Bungalow has spacious living room, kitchen/dining room, 2 bedrooms, full bath (w/ tub and shower), washer and dryer.

Centrally located on Mount Desert Island, minutes from downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Just across from the bungalow begins a wonderful country road leading to one of the islands most picturesque bike rides; You have to go up a long moderate hill and then turn left. for spectacular mountain views, farms and even an organic vegetable market). Take left at bottom of driveway and then an immediate right on Beech Hill Crossing - (long moderate incline till end of road, then turn left onto Beech Hill road) . Beech Hill Road is one of the prettiest walks/drives/bike rides anywhere on the island! At the end of this 3 mile road is Beech Mountain with marked trails.

The island wide free bus goes right past the house. Find out the schedule and you can wait at the bottom of the driveway. Just wave to the bus and they will stop for you.

The house is 1/2 mile from pristine Echo Lake... 12 minute drive to Downtown Bar Harbor, 5 minutes to historic Southwest Harbor, 10-15 minutes to almost anything Mount Desert Island has to offer including Acadia National Park, hiking, kayaking, beaches, boating, whale watches, historic walking tours, great shopping and dining choices and much more! The house is also on the free local bus route that will carry you to downtown Bar Harbor and most Island destinations. There is no smoking allowed in the house or any outbuildings.

If you like natural wood, and old fashioned settings, we think you will enjoy our charming little house in Somesville, just minutes from anywhere on Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park. It is a common sight to look out the window and see deer browsing behind the house. If you like to explore, you can take a short walk down the dirt road next door and end up at Somes Sound, or a 1/2 mile walk or drive will take you to one of the islands most beautiful lakes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great week at your charming bungalow and a great meal at Cafe Bluefish! Maine is the perfect place to come to get away from our city lived and Mount Desert Island is the best of Maine! It's like being transported back in time and your 1930 Bungalow is part of the reason. Thanks again, Chuck and Rhonda

Stayed at the bungalow June 2014, had a great week. Would recommend for folks wanting a nice place with a great location, (big yard for kids to play in too) close to National Park and Bar Harbor and also Southwest Harbor, not far from anything! Clean and cute.

Had a Great Time, Cute Place, Good Location

  • 5 of 5
We love the 1930 Bungalow, this was our second visit. It's not a big house but feels spacious because of the open layout of the common rooms. Lots of windows and a nice living room view of the pinkish sun setting over the distant tree line. Charming decor, cozy eclectic furniture, lovely vintage prints (and some nice local art) on the walls. I guess charming is just the defining word...and cozy. No more the 15 minute drive to everywhere on the island. We'll be back!

relaxing vacation in Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5
Enjoyed staying at your bungalow in Somesville. The location was perfect! Conveniently close to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, and private and peaceful when your tired from a long day of sightseeing. Bought lobster from a fisherman who lives just down the road, and brought them back and enjoyed them at the house. The house was clean and the it was very convenient to have a washer and dryer. Booking the rental was very effortless, as the owner is so nice! We highly recommend a trip over to Bass Harbor at the little restaurant there for lunch on their deck at the pier!!! Booked another week this summer - can hardly wait!!

Great getaway in Maine

  • 4 of 5
If you want to getaway on one take of gas this is the place. We found the cottage country style and felt relaxed right away. The owner make herself available to you and is great about any questions you should have. Our family hasd a great vacation and would go back again. So much to do and not enough time to do it in. Maine is great

Disappointed

  • 1 of 5
We would like to preface this review by stating that we have never written a negative review. We are generally optimistic and content to accept what we get and make the best of a situation. However, we were sickened when we arrived at the property, which was not even close to being as advertised. We hope to help others avoid a similar situation. To avoid being perceived as disgruntled whiners, we have taken photos to document the condition of the property. Unfortunately, Vacation Rentals does not allow the use of HTML tags or links in reviews, so we are unable to post our photos. The problems we found with the property were as follows: The lawn was weedy, overgrown, and unkempt. It was on major highway (Route 102). Lots of traffic noise. Front deck and stairs looked and felt unstable. Front door inside bungalow onto deck blocked by plant. Garage had lots of trash stacked in it. Adirondack chairs not as pictured. The photos never showed dilapidated sheds next to them. No bike path across from the bungalow. The sink and under counters was very dirty and cluttered with items just thrown about. Lack of pots and pans for cooking. There was laundry in the washer, with a note stating that it needed to be finished(sorry but not my job. I would not have minded washing my own sheets upon departure but for what we paid I should not have to tend to the previous weeks laundry). The toaster oven was filthy with lots of old bread crumbs. Mouse traps stacked under the counter cabinet (no dead mice though!). Master bedroom: The lamp shade was peeling and yellowed, pictures on wall printed from a computer and taped to the wall. Paint missing in place where pictures have been peeled off. No curtaines on the windows. Second bedroom: walls lacking paint where things peeled off, bare light bulb hanging from ceiling with no fixture. We did not stay at the property and found another very nice property in Ellsworth, for which we wrote a raving review. Our final comment is please see this property prior to renting...do not be fooled by the picutures.

Owner's Response: All I can say is that I apologized profusely to these renters. There was a mix up with the cleaners and the woman who was supposed to clean did not show up. I was told it would be taken care of and it was not. This is the only time in 10 years of renting that this has happened. I think that the renters were so disgruntled that their review was highly exaggerated. Many many people stay in the bungalow and they love it. It is very charming. It is perfectly situated to access many points of Acadia and nearby swimming at Pike's Point. It's close to Bar Harbor as well as Southwest Harbor for those who want a quieter more authentic experience.
