House, 5 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, 10 Sleeps

Located in Jaffrey, NH, our house is situated directly on the water, Gilmore Pond, which is a

pristine trout pond, stocked annually. There is no cleaner pond in the region, no milfoil- you can

actually see the bottom! (There are no jet skiis or waterskiing on this lake so it is best for

fishing, kayaking and swimming.) Our location is ideal for fishing, hiking, and biking with your own

private beach, a 3 mile loop to walk, bike and run and 10 minutes to the base of Mount Monadnock. We are located in southern New Hampshire, about an hour and a half drive from Boston.

The house is spacious with a large 3 season porch and dining area overlooking the Pond. It has a large fireplace and hard wood floors. There is a deck area for grilling directly off the 3 season porch which overlooks the pond. A granite patio is also connected to the 3 season porch and provides a separate eating area on the other side of the house.

There are five bedrooms with a total of 2 twin beds, 2 full beds, a queen and a king upstairs. Two bathrooms are located upstairs and a 1/2 bath is downstairs.

We have a "swim to" raft and boat dock and a great view of Mount Monadnock.

Peaceful Week on Beautiful Gilmore Pond

  • 4 of 5
We had such a wonderful vacation at the spacious Gilmore Pond property last summer that we rented it again this year. There was more than enough room for my husband and I and our 3 grown children/significant others to sleep. While we didn’t need to use it, there was even a beautifully decorated child’s bedroom adjoining the large master bedroom. The house is huge. There is a large country kitchen with an oversized soapstone sink and a walk-in pantry. There is also an office overlooking the pond, a cozy den, living room and a massive family room. I started each morning with a book and a mug of coffee in their large fenced-in, perennial garden patio area. There is also a large deck on the back of the house with a grill, only steps away from pristine Gilmore Pond. With no motor boats permitted on the pond, the water was crystal clear and our family (and our 6 year old Lab) enjoyed many hours swimming out to the raft, kayaking or simply sitting on the lawn and listening to the loons. Mid-week, we noticed that the refrigerator wasn’t operating properly so I emailed that owner and a repairman arrived within a couple of hours to fix it. A day of rain was still enjoyable as there was so much room to spread out that a couple of us watched the soccer tournament on TV while others found a quiet spot to read, play a game or search the internet. Our eldest daughter prepared a delicious dinner and we sat around the large table in the family room enjoying the evening and one another. We look forward to booking this property again.

Renter beware

  • 1 of 5
Overall, the house is spacious but old, dirty, and in need of repair both inside and out. Misleading information pertaining to beds, full kitchen, and rowboat. We were very disappointed in this property for a these specific reasons: Besides an awkward room layout, the kitchen did not have a dishwasher, the ice maker was broken, and kitchen sink sloped so it does not drain properly. There were both red and black ants throughout the house and the red ants in the kitchen invaded our food supply by day 2. The powder room downstairs had not been painted and smelled of urine and did not have a sink-you had to use a sink in the pantry after passing through the kitchen to wash your hands. One bedroom is inaccessible except thru the master bedroom, broken end table glass shade in master bedroom, you could hear rodents chewing in the walls at night, one of the “bedrooms” did not have a closet, there was no queen size mattress. The upstairs bathroom had a cracked window pane and the metal shower stalls felt dirty. We were woken at least 2 times in the middle of the night by the smoke detector only to find nothing was wrong. The rowboat is actually a motorized launch and it was dry docked, the view of Mt. Monadnock was only visible from the very end of the dock or from the water, the gas grill was rusty. All 3 very large trash containers stored outside had not been emptied in quite some time and were full of trash and maggots. The owner was pleasant to work with but does not live in NH, and thus unable to check on the condition of the property more regularly. Felt like we paid a lot for dirty and rundown.

The house is spacious, has a great view of the water, and the pond is very peaceful.

Owner's Response: This is a 100+ year old hunting lodge which was renovated. The floors are beautifully restored hard wood floors. The kitchen is old but has an original soapstone sink. There is a fieldstone fireplace in the living room. It is not a perfect house and the room layout is a bit awkward. There is a full kitchen but no dishwasher. The house is located in rural NH, there are critters around, squirrels, ants and occasionally a water snake in the pond. I'm not sure what a motorized launch is but there is a row boat and 2 kayaks available for use. The house is cleaned weekly directly before tenants arrive at no charge to the tenants. I have a property manager in town who oversees the property and the trash is picked up every Tuesday. If you are looking for an authentic New England experience, do rent this house. For those who like brand new, antiseptic, air conditioned, wall to wall carpeted homes, with plastic on the furniture, this is not the house for you.
