Quirky, quiet, lovely views

  • 4 of 5
We spent a very relaxing and quiet several days here. The view over the bay is really lovely -- every morning I drank a cup of tea in the sunroom and watched the birds and the tides. The furniture is comfortable and the kitchen is well-equipped (though we did wish we'd brought a couple sharp knives with us). The tv gets NESN and ESPN so we could enjoy watching Red Sox games in the evening (the tv itself isn't great, but we didn't really mind). For larger groups, the vents between floors might be a problem because sound really travels. The only thing that would keep me from renting this place again was the bed in the master bedroom. Not only is the mattress very firm, but it's covered in a plastic sleeve, as are the pillows, which makes for hard, sticky sleep. Other than that, the property manager is great (very responsive and provides a helpful binder full of local information), the property is clean, and the location is as peaceful as you could wish for.

a wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5
We were very pleased with our first stay at the Johnsons Bay getaway. We (family of four) found it just right -- actually quite spacious -- for us. You could sleep 8 there, but it might be a tad crowded.

Key good points: a very well-stocked kitchen -- we cooked most nights or grilled on the deck. The house also had many books and games, which we did not take advantage of because the weather all week was glorious and we were constantly on the go outdoors. The furnishings are comfortable, and the property manager is accessible, helpful and just plain wonderful.

Some have mentioned the open grates, and yes, it does mean sound carries, etc. It wasn't a huge issue for us.

The house was clean and the photos, descriptions are very accurate. We did not feel misled in any way, as sometimes can happen with rentals. You may book with confidence here. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect base for an active week

  • 5 of 5
We put together a group of sea kayakers to explore the varied waters around Cobscook Bay, enjoying a variety of day paddles from Campobello to Machias and all the area has to offer: big tides, currents and reversing falls, porpoises, seals and whales. Our friends found accommodations ranging from rented cabins at Quoddy Bay to campsites in the nearby state park, but the few of us who stayed at Johnson's Bay found it the perfect base. It quickly became the preferred spot for a post-paddle "debriefing" of wine, beer and appetizers on the deck and screened porch overlooking the bay. That porch was our favorite, watching herons, eagles, scooters and hummingbirds while the tide flowed in and out.
As noted in other reviews, the kitchen was well supplied and we cooked many fine meals, while also going out for an occasional meal in Lubec.
We lucked out with the weather: apart from some expected fog on the water, days were clear and dry (and nights afforded a beautiful view of the Milky Way and, on two days, the Perseid meteor shower). Had we faced a rain day, the house would have provided many spaces to spread out such that some could have enjoyed a video or some music while others would find a quiet nook to read, write, or take a nap.
Put early risers in the upstairs bedrooms, for the sun streams in from dawn... the ground level rooms are better for those who want a quiet grotto to sleep in. The house is very clean and dry, but a word of warning to allergy sufferers that they might find the ground floor which is built on grade a little musty.
Highly recommended, and certainly our first choice on our next trip to Lubec.

A great location for an "outdoor-sy" family trip!

A great location for an "outdoor-sy" family trip!
  • 5 of 5
We absolutely loved this rental home! We are an active family with teenagers -- each brought a friend, so there were 2 adults, and 4 teenage girls. There was plenty of room in the home -- the 4 levels were great fun -- the books and games were very much appreciated. The home was spacious, clean and airy. Several people mention the open venting system as a problem -- we weren't bothered by it. We brought a kayak, and the kids really enjoyed alternating between kayaking in the bay and clamming in the mud when the tide was out. I had a full day sitting in the sun room, happily crocheting and watching the kids. The area had plenty for us to do - hiking on Campobello Island, hiking Quoddy Point lighthouse trail, hiking the Bold Coast Trail (Cutler, Maine), going on a whale watch cruise, going deep sea fishing. We even think that we saw the northern lights from the porch (we could figure out no other explanation for the extended series of yellow/green light flares that were happening above the horizon one night). Caveats are that we are an outdoor-loving family, and we do not need fancy food, entertainment, etc to make us happy. Bugs and mud do not bother us (none were inside - the inside was very clean - but bugs and mud are a part of outdoor life in Maine!). We did find a wonderful chocolate store (Monica's) - but we did not find any restaurants worth writing home about, nor any good ice cream shops (always a must on a vacation!). The local restaurants were fine for a family, but not spectacular. The kitchen in the home was well stocked for cooking, so we did not suffer! The home manager was great to work with -- due to weird life circumstances, we changed our arrival dates twice - each time, the manager was gracious and responsive in responding to our requests. The only negative is that I would recommend an upgrade in the mattresses -- since so many hotels have switched to pillow top mattresses, it is weird to go back to just a regular mattress. They were not old and lumpy mattresses, but they also weren't full and fluffy like so many places have now. We still slept well, and would love to return in the future (we are watching the dates for the International Marathon that occurs there in late June.... you never know....)

Location

Activity and Interests

Lubec is situated at the easternmost point of land in the continental

U.S. You will discover miles of sandy beach, bold coastal cliffs,

peat bogs, rain forest, wildflower meadows, and abundant wildife.

Enjoy local whale watch tours, history and nature tours, puffin

tours, and reknowned birding sites. Visit three state parks,

Roosevelt-Campobello International Park, Moosehorn National Wildlife

refuge, and the many scenic hiking trails in the area. Go deep sea

fishing or take an evening sail aboard a tall ship. Visit 4

lighthouses, including West Quoddy Head, one of the most photographed

lighthouses in the country. The kids will enjoy the local playground,

parks, and swimming areas. History buffs will note that the first

naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought in nearby

Machiasport. Maine's own "Cannery Row" once lined the shores of Lubec

with sardine canning factories and herring smokehouses. You'll find

it all here -- friendly people, abundant wildife, rich history, and

spectacular scenery. You won't find pollution, traffic, or crowds.
