At the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center explore a ½-mi interpretive boardwalk through coastal hardwood and mangrove forest. Guided nature walks through trails and stingray feedings are offered at various times during the day. Dolphins, manatees, and turtles are often seen on the boat tour.
Bathtub Reef Park is at the north end of the Indian River Plantation and is an ideal swimming spot for children because the waters are shallow and usually calm. At low tide you can walk to the coral reef. Facilities at the park include restroom and showers.
Gilbert's House of Refuge was built in 1875 on Hutchinson Island. The museum is the only remaining building of nine such structures built by the U.S. Life-Saving Service (a predecessor of the Coast Guard) to aid stranded sailors. Exhibits include antique lifesaving equipment, maps, artifacts from nearby wrecks, and boatbuilding tools.
The FPL Energy Encounter is a science museum 15 miles north on Ocean Drive. The museum's focus is on electricity and energy generation and is located adjacent to the St. Luciie County Nuclear Power Plant. It is designed to appeal to children and families. This can be a great way to spend a bad weather day inside.
