Delightful hosts, cozy, convenient to Pacific Coast Highway, Pass Perks

  • 5 of 5
Wife and I stayed here for several nights while visiting Big Sur Coast, the AMAZING Monterey Aquarium (free entry with loan of Bill's Visitor pass), and the 17 mile drive (also free with the loan of Bill's pass). What nice perks!!
The home is in a nice residential neighborhood away from the crowded downtown Carmel beach hotel area and convenient (maybe a mile) to the Carmel shopping center and the PCH leading to the many Big Sur Coastal State parks - and just up the road from Point Lobos State Reserve - the crown jewel of the PCH.
Nice efficiency kitchen with full size refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, dishes and silverware, stove and TWO grills - one gas grill and a charcoal grill for the purists <grin>. Washer and Dryer - and Bill threw in some detergent to do a load or two without having to buy some. Dishwashing detergent left behind by previous visitors. Some condiments for those who cook a little on vacation. Nice deck to relax on in the evening with your favorite drink. Includes wifi access to check your email or look up stuff to plan your visit. Very comfortable bed, nice shower, Bill and his wife Ting are considerate neighbors you'll hardly know are around, but just a phone call away if you needed something, including answering questions about the area knowledgeably.
BTW - I've seen quite a few aquariums, but I was surprisingly impressed with the Monterey Aquarium. It is the best I've ever seen. Well worth at least 5 hours, and has stuff there for kids as well as adults, all laid out so adults have adult-level exhibits to explore while the kids are engaged within eyesight. We don't have children anymore, but we remember what it's like <grin>. There are also several restaurants WELL worth dining in located inside the Aquarium with a superb view of the Monterey Bay.
The scenic coast along the 17-mile drive is exceptional, as beautiful as anything in the State Parks, and you can send postcards to your golf friends postmarked Pebble Beach if you care to. Plan to go when the Tour bus hordes haven't started for the day or are through for the day to enjoy the coast areas more without the big crowds.

Caveats - not for wheelchair handicapped or persons without a rental car.

Basically a basement

  • 2 of 5
I felt the need to write this review because I felt a little misled by all the other reviews and descriptions of the property. The space is not private if you consider being able to hear the owners on the floor above you walk around and talking through the walls. The bed is soft but not great quality. The house is musty and has no air flow, no fans, no AC. The front load washing machine was full of mold. TV is great, bathroom is small, kitchen is good but not well equipped. Was nice of Bill to let us use his 17 mile drive pass and aquarium tickets. Was unimpressed with Cannery Row and the Aquarium IMO, big time waster. Pebble Beach was perfect, had a great lunch and cocktail hour there. The location is great though! Next to shopping and restaurants. Close to Point Lobos. You can also hear the street noise from the bedroom which I was not happy about. Just know that this is more of a basement apartment. Not a guest house. Probably not suitable for a light sleeper or anyone wanting a lot of privacy.

Owner's Response: I am shocked by the review. This is the first non five star we get for the past 6 years. Apparently this guest has different standard from 99.9% of us.
Our house sits on a slope and the back half is two stories. The guest unit occupies the entire first (ground) floor of the two stories. It is totally private w/ two separate entrances, one through a Dutch door the other through a pair of French doors that open to the unit's own private deck. House is very quiet and 100% private with stunning 180 degree view from Point Lobos to Carmel valley.
With windows open and/or French doors and Dutch door there is plenty of air flow. Nobody in Carmel has AC, we just don't need it.
As for the other negative comments I invite the reader to read all other reviews and judge for themselves.
I made specific arrangement at Pebble Beach Club to allow these guests to have lunch there.
The Aquarium is rated one of the top 10 in the World and the guests used our membership "free" guest passes, so what's not to like? We always tell our guests if there is anything they need to just ask and we will provide it, these guests never asked or complained.

A terrific get away

  • 5 of 5
We spent a very comfortable month here. The location is convenient, if you have a car. It is close to Carmel, to shopping, to golf, to Big Sur. The bed was excellent. The layout was very functional. Everything we needed was there, including a good washer and dryer. We loved reading and relaxing on the deck in the afternoon with the sun shining on us. Our hosts were very accommodating and their gardens are beautiful and welcoming--what a way to enter!

A month in Carmel

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I greatly enjoyed our sunny month in Carmel by the Sea. The facilities are cozy and friendly. Having our own kitchen and washer/dryer made it easy to 'pack light'(only carry-on baggage) and utilize local resources (yeah Costco!) during our month long stay.
We were especially pleased with the our central location to the many nearby points of interest, including: Monterey (Cannery Row, Aquarium), Pacific Grove (17 Mile Drive), Asilomar Conference Center, Pebble Beach, Carmel by the Sea (Hogs Breath restaurant, library with free books), and the Carmel Mission. Also nearby by a short drive were Carmel Valley, Laguna Seca raceway, Point Lobos State Park, and Pinnacle National Park. An extra bonus was free passes to both 17 Mile Drive and the Monterey Aquarium.
You definitely need a car to get around, but the distances are short. You can also spend as much time as you want sunbathing on your own private deck with a good view of the surrounding landscape.
For us, it was a true value vacation.
