Guestbook comments from the manager

What an ideal set up! All the comforts of home. This house was so perfect for our vacation we were in the forest or on the beach by day and refreshing and relaxing here by night.

Thank you so much for opening this up to us!

Some recommendations:

(1) Jedediah Smith - Stout Grove amazingly beautiful.

(2) The restaurant on Anchor Way(head south - last right before town ends) great food & atmosphere, seals & sea lions out the window.

(3) Pebble Beach - at end of Washington.

(4) Ride bikes or walk to the Pier and Lighthouse.

(5) Sitting and watching the majesty & power of the ocean.

We come during Spring break. Cold and windy - lots of rain and even flooding but that made for a very private experience. We had the forests and beaches to ourselves.

Charming, comfortable vacation home

  • 5 of 5
This comfortable, charming vacation rental with a nautical theme was more than we had hoped for. Though the house is older, it has been well-kept and was immaculately clean which we did appreciate. We had a lot of sight-seeing planned, however our son had just finished a rigorous chemo treatment and did not feel up to doing anything except watching the ocean from the car, sleeping or sitting in the sun in the back yard which was protected from the wind and was delightful. We enjoyed using the handy propane bar-b-que and cooked up yummy meals. My husband and I hiked in the woods 20 minutes from there where it was amazingly 20 degrees warmer! My daughter-in-law and I had a great day shopping in the antique stores where we found a few treasures and very friendly people. All in all we had a very relaxing vacation week. We will
definitely return to this lovely place and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to enjoy their visit to Crescent City.

Activity and Interests

For Whale Watchers and Kayaking, we have immediate OCEAN access (walk or drive down) and no crowds. It's great. But you can also rent a helicoptor to go see historical St. George Lighthouse that is 7 miles off shore. You can take a sand dunes walk at Point St. George, which towers over Pelican Bay to the north. We have real flocks of Pelicans! Botanical tours are available for the shoreline, but also for wetlands at Lake Earl, which is also close, and for the absolutely majestic and beautiful Redwood Forests and Smith River, where Trout and Salmon fishing abound, and where actual wild flowers can be seen in the Spring.

The City and County have annual events, including occasional Crab races, but also Festivals (the Aleutian geese gather here in hoards for a major meeting every year), a 4th of July weekend event that draws many thousands from all over Del Norte County, swelling the City from its normal 8000 people to ten to twenty thousand. You can even pre-register to be in the "H" Street "downtown" Fourth of July parade. There are Longboard Surfing competitions, a Whale Watching Tour boat, and a really colorful Kite Flying Club gathering drawing enthusiasts from as far as Oregon (well... 20 miles). Gold Beach (50 miles) at the Rogue River is where Jet Boat Rides are popular, if you've already been to the famous Klamath River (20 miles) Jet Boat Rides. Drop by the Trees of Mystery on the way home to take s short hike among trees that seem to have personalities, or take a drive just south of the Klamath through Prairie Creek State Park with ferns (and a very rare mountain lion). Just south are the Roosevelt Elk herds, if you drive by the meadows along Rt101 south of Klamath.

Whew! Oh, and yes, you can buy fresh-off-the-boat Dungeness Crab at a real Commercial Fishing Harbor in the Winter (starts in December), and drop by the friendly Elk Valley Casino in the evening and get free Pepsi. There's more, but come see for yourself! Check the end table drawer at the Cottage beside the Lazy Boy for more. In deep Summer, when the Central Valley is very hot, you can expect cool Marine Fog at the Cottage, mainly in the morning. In the Spring, you can see the Forests at their freshest and rain-washed best. In the Fall, you can see the most Sun, from Labor Day until Christmas. The later part of that period is when the Whales are coming back North on their ancient yearly migration back to Alaska, from Mexico. So, when are you coming?
