Guestbook comments from the owner

Review Submitted 05/23/12

I was looking for a weekend getaway for my birthday. This was a very last minute plan and I was lucky to have found this listing. The owner was very efficient, friendly and accommodating considering I booked the day before my trip. I had no idea what to really expect, the property looks nice in pictures but they really do this place no justice. The drive up to the house alone is gorgeous and when I say this house is right below a mountain I mean the back yard leads to hiking trails. This estate is so spacious we felt little in the house. There are two master suits and two smaller bedrooms with plenty of space. The pool and hot tub were AMAZING we had plans to hit the town and actually ended up staying in the house swimming and only leaving to go grab groceries. The hot tub is big enough for 15-20 people!! Swimming under the starts and enjoying the moonlit mountain views was so serene. We had some unexpected visitors at night, there was a family of frogs that graced us with their presence, hopping along like we were in their way which made for great laughs. The kitchen has everything needed for entertaining. Over all we had a great time, the home is clean, modern and the owner is very helpful if you have any questions. My only suggestion would be perhaps adding more furniture or decor because this home is HUGE it seems a little empty and plain, however this did not keep us from having a great weekend. I highly recommend this property if you are looking for privacy and relaxation.

Wonderful Family Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5
I decided last minute to take my wife and two small children on a weekend getaway. I searched several properties and came across this listing. The owner promptly responded to my inquiry and within 24hrs we were on our way to this Palm Springs residence for a 4-day vacation. We were very pleased that the property was well maintained and was just as impressive in person than the pictures provided. The property has a magnificent pool and hot tub with an incredible mountain view. We were also within walking distance to a variety of shops and restaurants. We had intentions of going sight seeing and taking our little ones to see some local attractions, but we enjoyed the home so much, we ended up spending more time there relaxing than we anticipated. We loved the calm, peaceful home and our children enjoyed playing in the wide-open, kid-friendly floor plan. This home certainly exceeded our expectations, meeting our needs which included accommodating kids, however we would easily go back another time with friends or alone and enjoy this spot equally as much due to its modern design and private location. Our only negative, was that we wished we would've booked just one more day/night there, as we were not quite ready to leave after 4 full days. Overall, I would highly recommend this property for a vacation getaway.

Unresponsive owner when problems arose

  • 1 of 5
The house itself has a nice large open plan that is good for entertaining and we were so excited about staying here. That excitement ended less than 24 hours of our being there. We ended up having a miserable experience. We woke up the first morning there to find out that we had been burglarized. (Yes, we were all in the house sleeping while it was burglarized) The thieves stole all of our computer equipment (including iPads, touches, etc..) as well as two handbags, wallets and car keys. So we spent most of our first full day there filing the police report, calling Credit card companies, the bank, etc.. Thankfully we had some friends coming from LA to spend the weekend elsewhere in Palm Springs and were able to bring us a spare set of car keys. Otherwise we would have had a major problem with that! The only thing stolen from the house was one TV. Everything else was our property. I texted and called the owner who had informed me the prior day that he would not be available all of that day. (Weird) Anyway, when he finally calls me back that night he never even asked if we were all ok. All he could say was that it was weird that it happened, never happened before and then asked if we locked all of the doors. (We did of course and the police confirmed that the burglars popped the locks on two doors). We have had numerous discussions with the owner about submitting this to his homeowners insurance and although he agreed, he has failed to give us any information on what he needs from us to do so and it is now over a month since this happened.

We also had to dispute the rental charge with the bank as the owner did not return our security deposit. It was only after contacting the bank that he credited money back, but he shorted us by $80. I emailed him a few days ago to inquire about this as well as ask again about the insurance claim issue and now his emails are coming back as undeliverable.

I can tell you that if I was renting out a house and I had tenants who were robbed of thousands of dollars in property, I would have done everything in my power to make sure they were ok and well taken care of. This guy is not that person at all. Save yourself the troubles we had and rent from someone who cares more. If he is this unresponsive and uncaring about this big of an issue, imagine how he handles smaller ones!

Owner's Response: Please note that no complaints are made about the quality and condition of the house and services. Obviously the above renter wholeheartedly agrees with the description of the house on this website.

My housekeeper greets each and every guest on their arrival. If I know that I will not be available to accept phone calls on a particular day, I let guests know in advance and make sure that they know to call Juana in case of an issue. The above guest clearly states that I told her in advance that I would not be available on Saturday to receive calls. She considers that weird, however, most people would consider that responsible, considerate and certainly not a reason to complain about being unresponsive.

With respect to the supposed burglary, the house has never been burgled before. The house is situated in one of the best areas of Palm Springs. However, there is a first time for everything. I am very security conscious, and one of the many reasons that I have Juana greet the guests on arrival is to show them how to deadbolt the doors at night and when they leave. The door hardware is imported from Germany, requiring the door handles to be pushed up before dead bolting. The deadbolt system includes two additional hooks on the reveal of the door which click into position when the deadbolt is activated, thus creating a triple point locking system. When properly locked, is impossible to pick or open without actually taking a sledge hammer to it. I personally tell each guest to make sure that they use this locking system.

The above guest says that she locked the doors but that they were picked. This cannot be true. Either they were not locked, or perhaps a burglary did not take place, and the guests decided they would in effect have a free vacation by trying to claim on my insurance, which they actually demanded and threatened action against me if I did not agree. The contract, which they signed, clearly states that any loss of property is solely the responsibility of the guest. This is standard.I had notified my insurance company was actually considering their request, when I received notice from the credit card company they they were disputing their security deposit charge, claiming that they had not received it back when if fact they had, minus utilities, as agreed in the contract. At that point I figured that I was probably being had. I have been very lucky with guests over the past years, however, I guess you just cant win them all.
