Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 6 Sleeps

Located 40 miles south of Tallahassee off Hwy 98 on Mashes Sands Rd., our Cottage is one of the original Cottages on this road, built in the 1940's, recently remodeled and painted. The Cottage is on ground level (no stairs or steps to climb) approximately 1430 sq. ft., concrete block and vinyl flooring.

The Cottage is on an 80' X 270' lot which goes directly down to the shore of the

Ochlocknee River (about 70ft. from back screened porch). Aged, gnarled oaks and terpentined pines shade the yard.

Our Cottage has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, large living room, kitchen/dining area, and a 11X22 screened porch which seats 5-6 people comfortably.

The porch is great for morning coffee or eating meals, reading, watching river traffic, and bird watching. The river runs east and west here and the sunrises and sunsets are breath taking.

About the Owner

We are from Ochlocknee, GA., about 90 miles from The Cottage. We have a 143 acre pine tree farm here in Thomas County with 3 fish ponds. We have been living here since December 1988. Pete grew up in Grady Co. and I in Thomas Co.

We travel from here to the Coast (about 1 1/2 hrs.) and do all of our own cleaning and maintenance and yard work. This gives us a chance to spend a night or two or three or more and enjoy The Cottage between guests. And also, we can be sure everything is as it should be for our guests.

Pete and I actually got married at The Cottage in June, 1988. I had been living there for the 5 years prior to that time. We are both now retired, Pete was a heavy equipment operator and I was in insurance and then a secretary on one of the plantations here in Thomas County.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The breeze was fabulous and the white squirrels, humming birds, woodpeckers, and more, were entertaining. This peaceful cottage was just what we needed.

Great place!

  • 5 of 5
We had another wonderful time at the Stewart Cottage. Has everything we desire..Peace and quiet, nice home, great rate, and beautiful views. We took our son, his wife, and our granddaughter. We fished the Ochlockonee Bay pier and the St. George pier and did pretty good. Our granddqaughter had a blast. She loved watching the squirrels and birds, the dolphins that would come into the bay to hunt, exploring the Gulf Specimen lab, and having a wonderful meal at Poseys. This place is a gem to the people lucky enough to find it. We will be back..Did i mention the quiet and solitude? No crowds to contend with, no hussle and bustle. Its always fun getting back to this place.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review. Glad to have you back again. You all love the same things about the cottage and the area that we do and the bird feeders help keep a constant party going on in the yard which is just fun to watch from the porch. I am so glad that the dolphins made an appearance for you all. Wish you could have seen the eagle that is frequently around also. When you get ready for some more R&R just let me know.

Wonderful cottage stay

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the cottage for five nights in April 2014, and we had a wonderful time. Four of us stayed in the cottage (2 adults, 2 small children), and it was very spacious, more space than we needed. The heating and air conditioning systems work well, and the drinking water is safe and tastes good.

We very much enjoyed the bird feeders that were set up, and we saw or heard almost 40 species of birds around the cottage during our stay. The area is very quiet, which was perfect for us. If you are looking for a pool-side resort-style place to stay in, this is definitely not the place for you. If we return to this area of Florida, we will definitely stay here again!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the great review David.

I hardly know anyone who doesn't like to watch the birds and squirrels, especially the white squirrel. This is something we have been doing for our quest for several years now and we have found that sitting on the porch watching the boats, kayakers, the river and the critters is one of everyone's favorite things about the cottage.

Thanks again,

Fourth of July 2013 Weekend

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Stewart Cottage over Independence Day weekend with another couple who are long time friends. The cottage was immaculately clean and was stocked with everything we would need. The beds were very comfortable, too. We loved the large screened back porch and spent most of our time out there. We had stopped by the farmer's market and seafood store to pick up supplies for cooking. The kitchen is fully stocked and we enjoyed cooking our meals, especially in the large cast iron frying pan. We had the best fireworks show(s) right from the back porch from across the River/Bay and had a great fireworks show that Holiday Campground put on. While there we saw a fox come up in the back yard near the birdfeeders one night. He fled when he noticed us but we enjoyed watching him. We did a lot of sightseeing driving around, stopping for lunch in St Marks, Alligator Point, and Wakulla Springs. The husbands went fishing at the public pier while we girls went antique and thrift store shopping. Highly recommend Pottery man in Sopchoppy and bought fresh eggs from him right from under the chickens! We loved our vacation and would definitely recommend it to anyone. We plan on returning. Thank you, Susan, for sharing your vacation home!

Owner's Response: Thank you Vickie for such a glowing review. We do so enjoy sharing our home-away-from-home with our guests and we try very hard to make everything as clean and convenient as possible.

So glad you all found the pottery place in Sopchoppy. It's a very interesting place to visit (didn't know he was selling egg though).

I had heard that the fireworks were GREAT this year in spite of the inclement weather. Glad you guys were able to see all from the cottage.

Thanks again for choosing "The Stewart Cottage" and for leaving everything in such great shape. I look forward to hearing from you all again for a return visit.

Great Fishing

  • 4 of 5
Stewart's cottage is a great place to stay especially if you like to fish. There is a public boat ramp about a half mile from the cottage. Chaires creek (beautiful) is right across the bay from the cottage and there's good fishing around the oyster bars out in front of Bald Point. We caught flounder, red fish, trout and Spanish Mackerel. Evidently there is good Tarpon fishing right outside of the bay. We saw several boats set up waiting for them to run through.

There is a paved bike trail on the road in front of the cottage and an off road hiking/biking trail which is across the road from the boat ramp. Mashes Sands is at the end of the road. Not your typical beautiful Florida beach but people do sun there and cool off in the water.

The cottage is very clean and comfortable, the beds are very comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed. There are several restaurants within one to five miles of the cottage and fish houses where you can pick up fresh shrimp, seafood, etc.

We thoroughly enjoyed the view from the back porch. When the wind was too strong to fish and we weren't riding bikes that's where we were. There is a beautiful view of the bay. Also there were lots of birds. I think Susan, the owner, filled up the feeders right before we got there. Thank you Susan. I also saw my first white squirrel while sitting on the porch. Maybe because the wind was blowing too hard or the screen was sufficient to keep them out, there were no nasty Florida stinging insects.

I am looking forward to going again in the fall and/or spring when the fishing should be even better. Patricia

From the Owner

My father and I purchased this house in 1982 ($50,000.). It was one of the few houses we looked at that actually had closets built in when the house was built and it did not sweat and the location was right. The house was built in the 1940's by a man from Thomasville. He then sold it to a lady from Thomasville and then we bought it from her. So only 3 owners from 1940 till now. My mother and father had owned a place on Alligator Point since 1970, the owner of the insurance agency that I worked for owned a house 4 doors west of The Cottage and the Agency owned a house 3 doors east of The Cottage so I was very familiar with the area and absolutely loved it. Lots of people from the Thomasville area had places down there and so it was like you were surrounded by people you knew and then you met others. We have lots of wonderful friends and great neighbors.

Activity and Interests

This is the perfect mini vacation get-away for couples or families, avid fishermen and hunters, girls get-away, guys weekend off, or FSU Football games in Tallahassee!

New, right in front of 'The Stewart Cottage' paved walking/cycling path, begins at the end of Mashes Sands Rd. and continues across Hwy 98 and on to Sopchoppy.

There are several excellent restaurants which serve locally fresh seafood or you can purchase and cook your own local, fresh seafood from the seafood houses in the Panacea area.

You can relax quietly in the Cottage or if you prefer more activity you are only 1.3 miles from Angelo's Restaurant, Tropical Trader, Big Daddy's Pizza, 1 mile from the public boat landing and public pier, and 1.25 miles from Mashes Sands Beach.

*If you have your own boat, you can put in at the public landing, go off shore salt

water fishing or up the Ochlocknee for fresh water fishing and then pull your boat up on the sandy river shore back of the Cottage (you will need to keep check on the tides). Don't have your own boat? There are charters available for off shore fishing or fresh water fishing up the Ochlocknee River.

*There is also seasonal cast netting for shrimp and mullet; scalloping, and floundering.

*For the hunter, you are only 30 to 45 minutes away from Tate's Hell or Samatra to the south and you are practically in the middle of the Apalachicola National Forest and the St. Marks Wild Life Refuge.

For the golfer there is St. James Bay Golf Course about 30 minutes south on Hwy 98.

Other sites and activities include Wakulla Springs (about 30 minutes away), Gulf Coast Specimen Lab in Panacea (kids love this) or take scenic Hwy 98 over Walker Bridge over the Ochlocknee River (which the Cottage is on) to Alligator Point, and on to St. Teresea, St. James Bay, Lanark Village, Carrabelle, East Point, St. George Island and Apalachicola. Along this scenic route are several places to dine and lots to see. Apalachicola is great for antiquing/junking/eating and sight seeing.

*Of course all Florida boating, fishing, netting and hunting regulations must be followed.
