Property Details

Updated: Sep 9, 2014
House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 4 Sleeps

Nestled in the very BEST location of Merida’s popular Santiago neighborhood of the Centro Historico – 3 blocks from Park Santiago, 3 blocks from Park Santa Lucia, 4 blocks from the grand Plaza de Independencia and just around the corner from Merida’s English Library – Casa Alegre (joyful house) offers 3 bedrooms and 2 baths in a classic, yet casual, fully restored Colonial "casita."

Basked in rich and savory shades of chartreuse, coral, mango, aqua and gold, this cozy oasis - complete with original pasta-tile floors, rich woodwork, open indoor/outdoor living spaces and comfortable furnishings – provides a serene retreat in the heart of the Yucatan’s bustling historic, cultural and social center.

Traditional iron gates and double wood doors open to an inviting reception/dining room. Relax and enjoy the breeze in the open and airy sitting room flanked by two intimate courtyards – one for sun and one for shade!

The spacious, air-conditioned master bedroom opens to the central “fountain courtyard" and provides a pillow-top king-size bed, 300+ count cotton linens and local “rustico” furnishings, including a custom-designed iron headboard. The second air-conditioned bedroom offers a queen-size bed and equal amenities. A newly remodeled full bath is located between the two main bedrooms, accessed via an adjoining vestibule. The bath features a traditional polished concrete countertop with integral sink, open shelving, hand-painted ceramic tile wainscot and skylight. The third bedroom/den opens to the rear “bamboo courtyard" and includes a full-size futon sleeper sofa. A second full bath opens directly to this space.

The bright and colorful, fully-equipped kitchen offers a large refrigerator/freezer, microwave oven, 4-burner gas cooktop stove, KRUPPS coffeemaker, Cuisinart stainless steel cookware, ceramic dinnerware and glass/stemware for six. The kitchen features traditional concrete countertops and open storage faced in hand-painted ceramic tile and skylights.

A local property manager meets each guest upon arrival to Casa Alegre and is available to assist with any/all travel needs including maid, cook, laundry & transportation services, as well as general information, activity & restaurant recommendations and tour bookings for attractions throughout Merida and the Yucatan region.

We’re sure you’ll find much joy at Casa Alegre and hope you’ll come back time and time again.

Location

Activity and Interests

Enjoy open markets, museums, galleries, fine dining, patio cafes, street festivals and more . . . all within easy walking distance. On Friday and Saturday nights, make the short stroll downtown where the streets are blocked off for al fresco dining, live entertainment and dancing.

Explore the many offerings of the Yucatan close by. Easy day trips include the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza (recently named one of the new 7 Wonders of the World), Uxmal and more.

Grand haciendas and natural cenotes (underground limestone pools of fresh water –

perfect for a cool afternoon swim!) dot the Yucatan and are a “must see!” Don’t miss the wonder of Celustun where the masses of pink flamingos will take your breath away. The sun-kissed beaches of Progresso, Chelem and other quaint seaside villages are a quick 30 minutes from Casa Alegre!
