Upstairs apt. and Downstairs apt. rented separately. Each apartment sleeps two

Little Island House is a two-apartment seasonal rental.

One enters the UPSTAIRS apartment by the outside stairway to the deck and sliding glass door. The deck continues around the corner and across the entire harbor-facing side of the house. Inside, the living and dining room area has cathedral ceiling and skylight with a granite floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Large windows are all around, and the sliding glass door completes the panoramic view. The kitchen--newly renovated in 2015--is well supplied, with a great view of its own. The bedroom, with skylight, is on the third floor and has a queen-size bed. The bathroom/shower are around the corner from the kitchen. The apartment sleeps two.

The DOWNSTAIRS apartment has two bedrooms, one with queen-size bed, the other with twin beds. The full bath is just a few steps down the hall. Kitchen and living room, with fireplace, have lovely views of harbor and mountains. Walk out the sliding glass door onto the deck which runs all the way across the front of the house and part way down the side. Water comes to 4-5 ft. from the deck at high tide. There are two private entrances: one from the deck's sliding glass door and the other from the front door on the garden side. There is a ramp for easy access to the deck. The apartment sleeps two.

Both apartments have central heat for the off season, excellent ventilation in summer, and all the firewood you'd like. Also included are cable TV, phone, wi-fi, all linens (bed, bath, and kitchen), and well-equipped kitchens. Immaculately clean, lovely decor. Outdoors: deck furniture and grill on both decks. No smoking, no pets.

Price quoted with calendar includes Maine's 8% lodging tax. Please add a $50 refundable cleaning deposit.

Bass Harbor Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island
Corpus Christi, Texas

Best View on Mt. Desert Island

  • 5 of 5
We spent two weeks in this lovely rental property. As there were only two of us, we only used the upstairs unit. The little house was beyond our expectations. The view was incredible. 180 degree view of a working lobster harbor. The deck had a perfect view of the sunsets, which were spectacular. The kitchen had everything you could possily want to cook up the local fish, farm veggies and cheese of the local area. The location was on the quiet side of the island, but that was fine with us. Bar Harbor is a short drive to the other side. The unit was very clean and well appointed. The fireplace was wonderful when the temperatures dipped at night. There is a lobster pound right across the harbor in Bernard. You can buy live lobster there and bring it home, or have dinner. A new restaurant called the Lobster Katch is within walking distance. There is a gas station nearby, small grocery just up the road, and a colorful local bar called Nemos very close by. The owners were very friendly and accomodating and also managed the tour boat from the dock. The tour was fantastic. I highly recommend it. Matter of fact, I would recommend this rental to just about anyone. There were only two minor things that were inconvenient. There was no washer or dryer, but doing our laundry in Southwest Harbor just up the road wasn't bad at all. The other was the size of the upstairs bed. It was a double and we are used to a king size, so we were pretty cozy.

From the Owner

When the opportunity came up to buy the Little Island property, boatyard and house, we decided to do it. Having lived on Gotts Island every summer of his life, my husband loved the area, and so did this Texas girl when he showed it to me soon after we were married in 1969. We have a cottage on Gotts Island and wouldn't want to be anywhere else from late spring to early fall, so renting the house works out nicely for us.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Bar Harbor 25 min., or Bangor Intl.,1 1/2 hrs.away at 15 Miles Nearest Barpub : Thurston's, across the harbor in Bernard at 2 Miles Nearest Golf : Bar Harbor at 18 Miles Nearest Beach : Echo Lake, a sandy beach for swimming, 15 min. at 10 Miles Car: necessary

Although we're only thirty minutes from Bar Harbor, we are essentially

very different. Bass Harbor is a small fishing village and working

harbor on the southern end of Mount Desert Island. We're called 'The

quiet side of the Island.'

There's plenty to do here: The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse,

Wonderland and Ship Harbor (part of Acadia National Park) are only a

mile or two away. At Little Island Marine, the small boatyard which

shares the peninsula with the house, the Island Cruise makes nature

trips and lunch cruises daily. Richard Stanley Custom Boats builds wooden boats at the boatyard next door.

From the Owner

Bird watching from the house is entertaining. We are casual, not scientific about it. One year we counted 12 herons in the mud flats at low tide right in front of the house in the harbor. The eagles have made an amazing comeback since my husband was a kid, when to see one eagle was rare. Now there are several sightings a day. One landed on the corner of the Upstairs deck to finish off a gull he was chomping on. Left a leg bone on the deck. Ducks of every kind come and go with the seasons. And we love the fishing fleet, Bass Harbor's healthy array of lobster boats, through calm, fog, or storm. The harbor is endlessly interesting, but peaceful too. Tide in, right up to the house; tide out, gulls working the mud flats.

Also: cable TV, phone, wifi, all linens (bed, bath, and kitchen), well-equipped kitchen. Immaculately clean, lovely decor. Outdoors: deck furniture and grill. No smoking, no pets. Views are beautiful. Bass Harbor has been photographed for the cover of a National Geographic book about New England, and has been the site of several movies. The lobster fishing boats are always interesting, and if you love wildlife, we've watched eagles soar past the deck (they frequent the harbor), counted twelve herons in the low tide one September day, and watched loons, ducks, terns and gulls work the harbor.
