Chincoteague Retreat -- Great Offseason Rates!

Chincoteague Retreat -- Great Offseason Rates!

Property Details

Updated: Oct 19, 2014
House, 2 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths, 6 Sleeps

If you like a sense of being away when you go away on vacation, our house is ideal. It is on 1/3 acre on a dead-end lane, just off Little Oyster Bay. It is surrounded by 100-year old cedars, spruces and pines. Even on the busiest weekends it is a wonderfully tranquil place, yet is only about five blocks from the road that takes you to Assateague Island.

We offer great offseason rates. In spring and fall, weekends are just $275 for two nights, $350 for three. Four-night midweek stays are just $300.

For anyone who loves nature and wildlife, our house is ideal. Because of our location -- surrounded by mature trees, a bay and undeveloped land, you can sit on our screened porch and watch and listen to an extraordinary variety of birds. We're within walking distance of a very nice nature trail. And we're very close to the entrance to Assateague Island, which is a wildlife preserve.

The house is very comfortable. It has two bedrooms and a half bath upstairs. Downstairs it has a living room with a gas-burning cast-iron stove and a family room/dining room, along with a full bath. A large screened porch with skylights and a ceiling fan is off the family room. It looks out onto several willow trees. There is a second, enclosed porch off the living room. The kitchen is small but well equipped. There is an outbuilding that is useful for storing bikes and beach gear, as well as an outdoor shower and a gas grill.

Retreat is right!

  • 5 of 5
If you are looking for an off-the-main-drag experience on Chincoteague Island, VA, The "Chincoteague Retreat" is it! This older house is loaded with charm right down to the oil lamps! Although older (hence the charm), it has a fully modern kitchen and bathrooms with plenty of hot water! Sunlight streams into almost every room, especially upstairs due to the many windows facing every direction. The location is on a quiet back street, but is also within quick and easy driving distance of Main Street as well as all other areas of town. This home was found in an online search, which provided an accurate description and great photos; and the price was RIGHT, hence our decision. The house was clean as a pin when we arrived, and stocked with small but important items like....toilet paper and paper towels! Our favorite restaurant was Bill's on Main Street. Don't miss the pecan pancakes with orange/cranberry butter and Applewood Bacon for breakfast, not to mention the Chincoteague oysters served there for dinner! The homeowner is very friendly and accommodating. It was a pleasure dealing with him. The biggest draw for us was the National Wildlife Refuge. If you are a bird and/or animal lover, watcher, or wildlife photographer, this is definitely the place! Many water birds simply posed for my lens! This house also has a wireless connection that takes only moments to connect. If you are bringing multiple electronics, a surge protector with multiple outlets would be helpful. It was great to return "home" after a day outside, to collapse in the comfort of this private home. Unlike other houses nearby, this house also has a GREAT yard surrounded by trees, shrubs and flowering plants that provide privacy. The locked outbuilding is great for storing beach items, bikes and whatever else you might have with you. This was our first visit to Chincoteague and we did learn that bicycle will be the way we go next trip. Everything is within easy reach via bike. I would definitely recommend the "Chincoteague Retreat" for a quiet, quaint, old-house-but-comfortable experience! Try it!

Chincotague Retreat

What a wonderful home away from home. It is cozy, welcoming, clean, and well kept, and our only responsibility is to Enjoy! The lot is spacious, in the heart of Nature, with plenty of privacy. Each room has its own personality - the living room is the media room, the kitchen / dining room is the gathering place. But the side porch was my favorite. It is great for gathering and fun, or for quiet times as well, in any kind of weather or temperature. A big part of the Chincoteague Retreat's charm is its location in a neighborhood on a quiet lane. It lets you feel like a "local" and get a true taste of what it is like to live in this beautiful, quaint, waterfront community. Many thanks to the landlord for the prompt, efficient, and gracious business relationship.

The perfect place

What a delightful surprise to find this sweet house on a lovely,
well maintained lot . . . beautiful trees providing delicious
shade. My favorite spot to hang out was the spacious
porch. The picture above gives a glimpse of the screened
porch but not the spacious-ness and beckoning of the
comfy chairs. Hhhhmmmmmmmmmmm so easy to stay put once
settled in!
Everything was neat, clean, and tidy. My friend and I were
constantly amazed at how everything we needed was there!
So, little need to venture out into the quaint town of
Chincoteague (a five minute drive or less; easy walk if
you are used to walking/hiking) or to nearby Assateague
home of the famous wild ponies (a ten-minute drive or easy
bicycle ride).
It was an easy place to be to enjoy quiet relaxation. The
neighborhood was quiet, peaceful, beautiful and the year-round
residents friendly. A variety of birds, crickets, and frogs
serenaded us with their soothing songs which we enjoyed
from the porch.
Coordinating our visit with the owner was easy. Tim was
pleasant and a joy to correspond with.
I can only give the highest rating to the Chincoteague Retreat
and have recommended it to several friends.
I look forward to being there again . . . for a longer stay.

Relaxing beach home

  • 5 of 5
My small family of 4 has rented this property periodically over the last 16 years or so, so know that we are satisfied renters! This is a small home, perfect for a family our size, but it is well stocked with kitchen supplies and has a number of rooms to relax in. There is a front porch, as well as a side screened-in porch and we have enjoyed both. You will not feel cramped in this property and "on top of one another." There are a number of rooms to go into and read, play games, whatever. There is also an ample side yard for those with children who want to play outside. The home is located on a quiet lane in a neighborhood. Every year my children, who are now almost out of their teens, look forward to returning to this home. We have never personally met the owner, but feel like we know him, and have always felt he provides a very good property at a very fair price. All our dealings with him over the years have been excellent.

Staying was a retreat!

  • 4 of 5
The Chincoteague Retreat was exactly as described. The house was cozy and very homey with plenty of room. The screened-in porch was a wonderful place to hang out and read.

The island itself has plenty of charm with lots of local places to get seafood. The Island Creamery has wonderful homemade ice cream and the portions are huge! Plenty of hiking on nearby Assateague and seeing the wild ponies was a highlight.

All in all, it was a relaxing vacation. We would definitely return!

Activity and Interests

There is great biking and walking from our house. We are a half-mile from a new nature trail. There is a public boat launch a half mile away. There are restaurants and shops on Maddox Blvd., five blocks away. The stores along Main Street are about a mile away, five minutes by car.

The beaches are on Assateague Island, which is a national wildlife preserve with no development. There are miles of biking and walking trails on the island. We are relatively close to the entrance to Assateague, which is 5-7 minutes away by car.
