We have stayed multiple times at the Liberty Inn over the past year, and each time has been delightful. Most times it's just my husband and me, but over the Labor Day weekend we booked the entire house with three other couples who we take an annual trip with. We enjoyed sitting on the covered front porch, having coffee on the back deck overlooking the wooded hillside, playing board games at the big dining room table, and watching the baseball games on TV. We could have cooked up a storm in the very well equipped kitchen, but that's not our style; we headed out for some local color. State Street Diner is a fun taste of nostalgia, and offers a very good, hearty breakfast for a reasonable price. The White Turkey, an amazing rootbeer stand, is a must if you're there between Mother's Day and Labor Day. Our group had a lovely dinner at Tarsitano's winery, and everyone was very pleased with their steaks and amazing assortment of home-made raviolis.
But back to the Inn. If you appreciate historical, it's been beautifully restored, complete with a handwritten reminiscense from a woman who grew up in the home back in the early 1900's. It's what I'd call comfortable Victorian/cozy. Not over the top, but just plain friendly and full of interesting items to explore. Very tastefully decorated, with careful attention given to the guests' comfort. And something that my husband and I really appreciate, we do not feel "watched over" or at all restricted in our independence by the innkeeper. We know she's available to address any needs, but we can actually pretend for a few days that it's our home, not someone else's.
On our next stay, we hope to book the entire house again for us and our children and their spouses. With the beaufiful beach and harbor area nearby, it's a perfect relaxing place for a family reunion. But you have to be one who appreciates small town, quiet, relaxing time together, not lots of fast paced, commercial action.
We have travelled a lot, usually staying at premium lodging, and usually avoiding Bed and Breakfasts because we cherish our privacy. But for us the Liberty Inn is perfect; there is no downside.
