Guestbook comments from the owner

The four of us enjoyed our stay in the beautiful brownstone property on Cedar. The location was perfect for walking everywhere from Second City to the Art Institute. We were able to comfortably visit together but had privacy at the same time. The restaurants and nightclubs were right around the corner and we enjoyed several of them. Cedar is a very quiet residential street and sleeping was easy and we felt safe and right at home.

Reunion After 31 Years

  • 5 of 5
Five girlfriends from both coasts met in Chicago for a long weekend! Location was fabulous. All three mornings we walked for coffee and then to lake for morning walks. Home is located in a beautiful and safe neighborhood. Easy walk to the L (underground transportation.) The home was clean, and comfortable. I personally slept on the pullout couch with the memory foam topper and was surprised how good a night's sleep I had. We enjoyed every meal out but the kitchen looked clean and well stocked. One of us needed scissors and they were in a logical drawer no hunting for them. Before arriving the property owners provided us with important information and phone numbers that ended up being very helpful. We all would stay here again.

Girlfriends

Great location! The furnishings are lovely. Be aware the apt is listed as first floor but is actually basement and first floor. The unit is awkwardly split by the floor with the kitchen and dinning in the basement along with one bedroom. Main floor has living area and second bedroom. Many lights didn't work including main entry and outside entry. We had to request a repair and thankful that they accomplished the repair right away. Overall is a lovely location and apt, just strange with kitchen in basement. Great restaurants and cafes nearby and located at head of Mag Mile shopping. Loved the quiet street and easy access to taxi or walking to city activity. Don't miss the Rosebud Restaurant! The customer service was great, they answered all calls and concerns promptly. Recommend if split level is not an issue for you or family. Basement is not suitable for handicap.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review and we're happy to hear you enjoyed your time in our home and all the location has to offer. We have weekly checklist walkthroughs of the property to look for and fix such items as the lighting. We appreciate the heads up so it is addressed this week. As this property was originally built in the 1890's as a single family home, the kitchens were customarily built on the garden level with separate access provided to staff. We opted to keep this part of the charm and history of the building so the kitchen remains on the garden level. It is indeed a duplex (two level) apartment with a garden level (half below street level) and first floor level (half above street level) which is very customary construction for the homes of this era in this area. We would not (and don't) recommend it or any of the other units in the building for those who have trouble navigating stairs. Rosebud is one of many absolutely fabulous restaurants you can walk to in the area so plan ahead and hit as many as you can! Thank you again and we hope to have you back on your next visit to Chicago!

Everything was just as described. No surprises. The place was clean, tidy, comfortable and great location. While the bathroom and kitchen were just fine and everything worked they are a bit small, however we cooked a full Xmas dinner and entertained nine of our family comfortably. Would recommend a larger dining table with more chairs, more than one set of bath towels and if possible provide parking stickers for convienence. Overall I would vacation here again.

Great Location for shopping, dining, lake/beach

  • 5 of 5
This is a great brownstone for a small group or family size of 4-6. The location is great, tucked between great restaurants and fun bars on Division St. or tons of shopping on Michigan Ave. The lake is within walking distance as well. It is safe and the street is adorable. My girlfriends and I do a annual shopping trip to Chicago and we've stayed here twice. We will be back.

Windy CIty Wedding Weekend

  • 4 of 5
We rented the whole brownstone for our daughter's wedding weekend. Our whole family (11 adults) had plenty of room, beds, clean linen, towels, dish ware ect ... for a comfortable stay. The brownstone was clean and as described, there were no surprises. The outside had newly planted fall flowers in the window boxes and pots. Inside had new curtains on the bedroom windows and the house was neat and clean. We used both, blow up beds and a new pullout couch that has a memory foam topper to put on the flimsy mattress. My adult son slept on that and it was very comfortable. We were impressed by the water pressure and the plentiful hot water for showering. Grocery stores, Bloomingdales and many great restaurants for all budgets within a 5 minute walk. My husband and I came in a day earlier than the rest of the family and we grocery shopped for the weekend. Treasure Island .3 miles from the brownstone delivered our groceries and carried them up to the 2nd floor apt. For a $9 dollar delivery fee. This was wonderful since we had bought cases of bottled water and other heavier items. Recommend Nico for dinner and Luxbar for brunch. I highly recommend this Brownstone for family gatherings! We will be back!

Disappointed don't believe the hype

Disappointed don't believe the hype

I have waited a while to write this review as I wanted to give the letting agent a chance to respond to the 2 e mails that I sent them on my return to the UK. In them I pointed out a few issues with this property, however, as I have to date not received a reply I felt it only fair to give an honest review of this property.
The house is not as described it not luxurious by any standards and is in the main dirty, musty and tatty.
I could have looked past the condition of the fixtures and fittings but there is no excuse for dirty bedding, curtains and general dust.
We never found the e z bed which was advertised and had to sleep on a very uncomfortable and worn sofa bed (that was after we had to initially brushed off the hair, bottle tops and food that was in the mattress) .
The sofa was ripped and worn and covered over with a musty blanket and all of the furnishings without exception were in a similar condition.
The kitchen cupboards were tatty and the shelves needed a good clean.
The bathrooms had mould in, the mirror in one was discoloured and the toilet coming off the wall.
The bedding for the sofa beds was dirty and several of the pillows had what looked like blood on them I won't even say what some of the stains on the sheets looked like.
The plastic plants in the property were filty as were the windows, pelmets and skirtings.
I could go on but you can read the previous 2 unhappy customers to get the rest of the picture.
I e mailed the letting agent as many of these issues are easy to fix, but it would appear they are not bothered as a previous renter appears to have already pointed some of this issues out and was assured they had been dealt with. This is not true.
We were here 3 nights, had we been in a hotel we would have insisted on being moved.
We made the most of it, (we did not want to spend our precious time complaining).
In fairness the property is a good size and without doubt in an amazing location. But there were plenty of properties available in this area for the price we paid for this one.
The two stars is for the location and size of the property.
