Updated: Sep 9, 2014
House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 4 Sleeps

Casa 503 is a fully renovated house located within the popular barrio (neighbourhood) of Santiago in Merida's Centro district. It sits on a quiet bus-free street just one block from the beautiful Parque del Centenario which houses Merida's free-to-enter zoo. Within 2 minutes walk is a large supermarket and pharmacy for your local shopping needs.

The spacious house has two air-conditioned bedrooms with on-suite bathrooms, a living room with comfortable leather sofas and a large TV with HD cable, a fully-equipped kitchen designed for those who love to cook, a second living/dining room with dining table and large comfortable L-shaped sofa - this room opens onto the spacious and completely private yard where you will find ample space for relaxing or entertaining, and a 40ft filtered lap pool that gets lots of sun and is useable throughout the year.

The house has traditional pasta tile floors, thick mamposteria walls, and remains cool with good air-flow from front to back and has fans in every room. High-speed wireless internet is provided, as well as laundry facilities and hot water throughout the house. All windows and doors are equipped with insect screens.

Merida is safe and pedestrian-friendly with many small parks and squares and is easy to explore on foot. From the house a 10 minute stroll past the grand colonial buildings on Calle 59 brings you to Parque de Santiago with its beautiful church, market, Art Deco cinema, and on Tuesday evenings live music and dancing in the square. Continue down Calle 59 and you'll soon be standing in Merida's main plaza gazing up at the oldest cathedral in the Americas, surrounded by street vendors and market stalls.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My wife and I stayed in Casa 503 for the entire month of June 2011. My wife is Mexican-native and has spent her 20’s in Merida, so we were quite familiar with the city and neighbourhoods.

Casa 503 has recently been remodelled in a lovely way, where you’ll encounter both western standards and authentic Mexican style of living / architecture.

We actually took a look at various houses in advance to our booking – without a doubt Casa 503 is the best deal you can get regarding size/quality/location in this price category. My wife and I had a wonderful time in Casa 503 and can only highly recommend it to every tourist who’s interested in an authentic lodging and a recovering vacation. Neil cares a lot about the house and all concerns his guests might face, though he leaves you in peace if you don’t need his help.

a very good stay

  • 5 of 5
Neil is the best property manager we had since we are spending holidays in Mérida. He is discrete and helpful. For example he picks us up at the airport and brings us back to the airport. The house information book is well done and very helpful.
The swimming pool is wonderful (it's not a padding pool!), it's really possible to swim in it. You can practice different swim styles.
The back of the house with its sitting corner, "stone garden" is cute, a small paradise, and we did not hear the street.
The house is situated close to the zoo. A supermarket is 250m away. From the house it's also easy to reach the market of Santiago (by foot 10 to 12 minutes; by bus only a few minutes). 5 minutes more for the Zócalo of Mérida.
Resumee: a very good stay

Merida in November

  • 5 of 5
We traveled to Merida in November, 2013 for two weeks and absolutely LOVED Casa 503! We have been to Merida in the past but never rented a house - we have been inspired by Neil and are currently shopping for our own house there. Casa 503 is well planned with a very functional floor plan, modern kitchen & baths, but the best feature was the garden and lap pool where we spent most of our outdoor time. There was onsite laundry and Daniela the maid spoke fantastic English, going above and beyond our expectations. Since it was the American Thanksgiving while we were there, we were able to fully utilize the large and well equipped kitchen, and enjoyed the Aki Grocery only 2 short blocks away. The neighborhood is quiet and convenient to Santiago and the Centro, all within walking distance. Neil was a fantastic host and even took us to Uxmal and a secret, off-the-beaten-path Cenote for a nominal fee. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it for anyone interested in exploring Merida and the Yucatan State. Thank you again and again, Neil - we hope to see you again soon!

Owner's Response: Thank you Lizzy and Greg for a great review, it was a pleasure having you stay at Casa 503 and you're welcome back any time. Of course you'll probably have your own house to stay in next time!

Since you left I managed to reach the cenotes we tried to go to, not as off the beaten track as Kankirixche but worth a visit and interesting in their own way - each and every cenote has its own character.

Hope to see you both in Merida again soon.

¡sensacional!

  • 5 of 5
My husband, two young daughters (2 & 4 yrs) and I stayed at Casa 503 for two weeks in June, and it was absolutely magical. Since our children are so young we knew we wouldn't be able to eat out often, so we truly enjoyed walking a few blocks to the supermarket and preparing our food in the spacious kitchen. With the heat in June the pool felt heavenly, and our girls had a blast playing. We also took advantage of the free entry zoo near the house, and had a great time there. Venturing out into the city required walking a bit, but it worked out well for us because we brought two umbrella strollers. Neil is very helpful with any house questions & knowledgeable regarding the Merida & it's surroundings. We can't wait to return. Thanks so much for your wonderful hospitality, Neil.

Great House and a Great Host

  • 5 of 5
I stayed here with my fiance in late May and had a wonderful time. The pool was great, the house was clean, the neighborhood was quiet at night, and it was within walking distance of everything you would want to see within Centro. If you like taking longer walks, you can even walk quite far up Paseo Montejo. Neil was also a great host and was even available to take us on a few road trips throughout the Yucatan. On three separate days we went to Celestún, Uxmal, Izamal and a cenote in Chunkanan. All of these trips were great and Neil knew where to find the best food in each place. I very much enjoyed my stay in the house and would love to come back someday after I'm done traveling the world with my fiance. The house has a great layout that would make a stay there great for a romantic getaway, a group of friends, or a family. It should also be noted that if you are looking to travel to anywhere on the Yucatan peninsula, Mérida is the place you should visit. It's a slow-paced city, but there are lots of great things to do and see. It has colonial charm, wonderful people, and an overall great culture.

We'll be back!

We'll be back!

This was our first visit to Merida, we loved it and hope to return. The pool was so refreshing and private after a warm day of tramping about in the sun. Loved that the Santiago park/market/food stalls were halfway to downtown, perfect for a stop along the way. The house was clean and cool, well-equipped and well-maintained. When the gorgeous and massive bougainvillea blew down in a storm, Neil was there within hours to repair the damage. Quiet area, nice neighbours, near bus routes, all that made our holiday a pleasure. If you wanted to bring adult family or friends to share, the layout could work well. There are three areas for dining at home, one being the kitchen, another full dining table, plus the outside table. The two bedrooms and bathrooms have good separation. We hesitated to recommend only because we don't want Casa 503 to be fully booked when we want to return!

Location

Activity and Interests

Merida is the cultural centre of the Yucatan with many museums, art galleries, concert halls, and free live music in the city's parks. The city is full of beautiful old colonial architecture and many churches including the oldest cathedral in the Americas. There are many fine restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets - eat fresh seafood tacos with the locals or dine in fine establishments that wouldn't be out of place in London or New York. If shopping is your thing there are modern air-conditioned malls or you can explore the antique and craft shops around centro or get lost in the maze that is San Benito Market. For exercise, head up calle 60 to Estadio Salvador Alvarado where early in the mornings you'll find hundreds of locals and ex-pats running, working out, joining in aerobics classes, playing tennis, squash, racket-ball, basketball, or just walking in the early morning sunshine.

The countryside surrounding Merida is full of interesting places to visit. Head north to the coast at Progreso for some sun, sand and seafood, visit the flamingo colonies at Celestun, swim in the warm fresh underground waters of a cenote, visit a hacienda and explore the history that once made Merida one of the richest cities in the world, or explore the ruins of ancient Mayan cities at places such as Uxmal, Mayapan or Chichen-Itza. Your property manager can arrange an English-speaking tour guide and transport to make any of these trips, and can also facilitate car hire.
