Needs work and more TLC

This is a nice little house with a great layout. It has one bedroom on the main floor, which contains a king bed and three chests of drawers. Also on the main floor are the kitchen, living area and bathroom. The kitchen is very well stocked with dishes, cookware, etc.The dining table seats four, with three more seats at a small breakfast bar. The living area has a futon, a papasan chair and a small, old TV. There is a high ceiling that opens to a loft which may be what the owner calls a second bedroom. There is also a basement which stays pleasantly cooler than upstairs and which contains a second living area with a large screen TV, a sofa and two single beds.

The house shows signs that the owner is working to improve it. The carpeting seems newer, the two sliding glass doors on the main floor are new and the bathroom has a nice wood ceiling. But it needs a lot of work, too. The wallpaper is peeling and there were some holes in the walls.

On the down side: The first thing we noticed was the sidewalk overgrown with weeds and the deck that is badly In need of a paint job. When we went inside it was HOT! The thermostat goes up to 90 and it was topped out. There was a ceiling fan and a window fan on the main floor, and a ceiling fan in the basement, and that was it for cooling; painfully inadequate on a day when the temperature gets well into the 80s, as was the case for most of our stay.

Another big problem is that the water smells terribly of sulphur and is very hard. There is a purifying system in the basement, but it was not working as evidenced by the hard water build-up in the shower. No wonder as there was no salt in the water softener tank. There was also no dehumidifier in the utility room, so the tanks were like giant ice water glasses collecting moisture and dripping it onto the floor. A huge puddle ran all the way around the perimeter of the room and under the door and wall, where it proceeded to soak into the wall and carpeting. (The owner said he would call his plumber, but no one ever came.) The result was a damp basement with a strong mildewey smell. I didn't even want to go down there, but ended up sleeping there most of the week we stayed because it was the only place cool enough for me to be able to sleep. When I left I had a bad sore throat that lasted for a week, which I'm sure was caused by the mildew.

This house has a lot of potential but lacks proper maintenance and the homey touches I am used to seeing in other rentals.

Owner's Response: I have rented this house year round for going on 5 years and this is the only negative review. Updates are done annually and this is a cottage. Thank you
