Come vacation in this wonderfully remodeled waterfront home! This 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home will wow you from the moment you walk in the home! It is 'cozy' on size, but is packed with the latest updates, is tastfully decorated, and is neat and clean. The kitchen and dining area are open to the living room, so that you can view the lake from the entire 'living' area. The kitchen boasts granite countertops, tile backsplash, stainless steel appliances, and a huge bar. Both bathrooms have been updated with tile flooring, upgraded vanities, mirrors, lighting, and fixtures. Hardwood flooring is throughout the entire living area of the home (bedrooms are carpeted).

Sleeping accommodations consist of a queen bed in both the master and second bedroom, two twin beds in the 3rd bedroom, and a standard couch in the living room.

Please note: Smoking is allowed in the garage, and anywhere outside of the home. At least one ashtray will be provided outside... Smoking is not allowed in the home: it will result in the loss of your security deposit.

Falls short

Upon arrival the cottage had a rancid smell of pet urine (coming from the garage and probably from the neighbors cats) and there was dust everywhere with cobwebs on the corners/walls. We immediately went to the conveniently located Food Lion for some cleaning supplies and did our best to remedy the situation. Just outside the living room is a very nice covered porch, however it had a HUGE hornets next inside the rotted ceiling/eves that made it difficult for us to enjoy the covered patio. The dock was unsafe as nails were sticking up throughout and splinters abound; the dock was very short and water shallow, so the silty sandy lake bottom stirred up with the slightest disturbance; luckily the neighbors allowed us to use their docks to swim from as the water gets deep fairly quick and the silty water isn't affected at that point. There is a public lake access just around the corner from the property (six lots over...NOT three lots as mentioned in the ad...details matter). Everything you need to survive for an extended period of time is located on site, although we had to wash all the linens/towels because they smelled of mildew upon arrival, probably from the dampness inside the cottage since most of the walls in the bathrooms had mildew on them. The guest shower drained so slow we decided not to use it after two days (we stayed for three weeks). The grass was so long our kids were not able to enjoy the large yard.
Positives... we were desperate for a "vacation home" on short notice and this was the ONLY place available for the time frame we were looking for (4.5 weeks), so we were thankful to have a place to stay. There are a number of stores and restaurants about 5 minutes away and I-77 is about 10 minutes from the property for easy access to all the areas attractions. Since the property had so many open days we were able to negotiate a greater than 50% discount off of the listed price (although the owner continuously reminded us of our "discount" when we notified her of the challenges we encountered).

The manager/owner was very appeasing at first and appeared to negotiate a great deal, but once funds were collected she became borderline nasty with us. We decided to leave almost a week early and tried our best to make the most of our time, however we will NOT rent from this manager/owner again. The property has potential...but as it was, it is easy to see why we got the discount.

Owner's Response: This gentleman notified us of the odor in the garage and dust-upon this notification, I immediately asked if I should personally come and take care of the issues, to which he declined. Per his response on text "I wouldn't call the smell an issue, I just wanted to bring it to your attention since we have pets". Note that we allow one dog to come with the vacationers, however, an exception was made for this vacationer to bring multiple animals.
He did not mention that mildew was present in any of the bathrooms or in any other part of the home, that the towels did not smell fresh, or that the dock had nails. Per his text response "no issues". This home has been a vacation rental home since 2008, and no-one, prior to this vacationer has complained of mold, mildew, or nails in the dock. And could he be suggesting that we, as the owners, are responsible for the 'silty' bottom of the lake...?

This vacationer gave his credit card information as his payment. However, the agreed amount was not authorized. I followed up with him and he gave me another billing address to try again. Again, it was not authorized. I followed up again, received a 3rd billing address, which, alas, was also not authorized. He agreed to send a check as payment.
He signed a rental agreement for a 30-day stay. Within a week, he asked via text if he would be receive a refund if he left a week early. I replied that if we had a notice and were able to re-rent, then yes. However, we were 17 days in to a 30-day lease before he asked again to leave a week early. In an effort to accommodate, I offered a partial re-imbursement for his early departure. He refused, stating that the amount was not enough.
He decided to leave 6 days early, and adamantly requested a final walk-through for 8-10am the morning of his departure, with less than a 48-hour notice. The keys were returned, but however, within a few days of his departure, he then requested to come back to stay for one night.

A final note--the community offers a lake-front access area that is for the residents and vacationers to use. This lot is 3 lots away from the 'Surfside Retreat', not 6, as this gentleman states in his review. This can be verified on Google Maps or any other internet satellite site......

We had a wonderful time. All accommodations were as advertised and our experience on Lake Norman was great. The owners were very responsive to the few little things that we requested. They were also able to get us a boat after the one we had planned to use was not available. We would definitely do it again.

Shoals Grill was a great restaurant and only a few minutes away.
