Relaxing place to stay
Not what it looks like
We rented this place for 7 days and left after 5. Every room was filled with dead spiders, cobwebs and general dirt. The sheets and towels (what little were there) smelled! The place didn’t look like it was even cleaned before we arrived. Food was left in the refrigerator and cabinets. How long has this stuff been there?
I had several communications with Mike (the owner) and he assured me that the house was in good condition (not). The carpets were extremely dirty, broken window, missing ceiling tiles, leaking water pipes, an outlet that looked like it caught on fire, seemed that only half the lights worked and the best part was there was only 1 trash can for the whole house! There was not a dumpster or someone coming by to take the trash so we had to leave 5 days of trash on the porch and pray that it didn’t attract any animals.
The pool was over chlorinated and the pool floor was covered in algae. There were only a few chairs to sit around the pool on. No table or umbrella to sit under to get out of the sun and still enjoy the outdoors.
Sure the house was very large, but 4 of the 5 bedrooms were hot because the air conditioning couldn't cool them down....and few had fans to help out. The sliding glass doors were hard to open because of all the dirt in the tracks and they didn't lock. The screens to the doors (upstairs) were broken and they couldn’t be used either to help circulate some air upstairs. The other sliding doors didn't have screens to use.
The road to the “castle” is all gravel (1 ½ miles) with deep ruts (6” to a foot deep)not maintained at all. We were on motorcycles and Mike assured me that motorcycles would make it up the mountain. WRONG! We couldn’t even make it up ¼ of the way and had to park the bikes and leave them in the woods.
My advice: take your money and rent someplace else. This CASTLE in the Sky is more like a DUMP in the Sky.
We have over 20 outside seats that do get moved around because there are many nice sitting areas to enjoy the amazing views. A welcome letter is left with instructions for house including what to do with trash. I feel the house is in good condition with nice cherry hardwood floors and ceramic tile, ac vents in every bedroom, ceiling fans in 4 bedrooms and both living areas. That said it also is not super high end; not even granite counters, or marble showers with brass fixtures, no Mahogany doors
Pool is tested, adjusted and vacuumed before every renter. Road is gravel and we have had many severe storms this year it is definitely one of the better maintained gravel roads in the area and does not have large ruts. I only have 2 wheel drive and have never had trouble. This is not over the top polished everything is perfect property nor is it priced to be. This is a very unique property very large with large private pool and a view rare to have to yourself (very cool in morning at times when clouds are below and slowly lift). You sit in the middle of 75 private mountain top acres with (also rare) about an acre of flat kept cut grass to play and enjoy along with many hiking roads/trails to explore and see different angle views. Property goes to top with national forest owning from there.
We are in a great location on The Cherokee/Harrahs side of Franklin with better access to Asheville yet only about 12 miles from Downtown Franklin. Look for are own Gem mining in 2014 search our property or take your time sifting thru buckets from other local mines. I urge you to overlook this review (This week was also unfortunately a rain out) and come see for yourself and share our little piece of paradise.
However, there are a few things you should consider if you are going to stay here. You really are out there. It is about a 10 minute drive up the mountain on a gravel road. We forded a small stream. This would be a great time to use your 4WD, but our Honda Odyssey made it up just fine. Also there is no wifi and we did not have cell service. I wasn’t crazy about that, but it did help us to get away.
You should also realize that you are in the mountains. There are bugs. We saw some cool lizards and the biggest spider I’ve ever seen outside of the zoo. We did have to clean up and kill some bugs inside. It’s almost unavoidable in a place like this. You should just know you’ll be dealing with some bugs. This was probably a bigger deal for us than for others because of our small kids.
The owner is still making improvements on the house. He had been working on a plumbing issue before we arrived. There were some outlet covers off. In talking with him after our stay, he has already taken care of these issues. The house is mostly in good condition and it seems that he will keep working on the maintenance.
The house is huge. There is a lot of space. There are actually 5 bedrooms and 5 baths. Plus a TV room, living room, and upstairs play room. There are technically beds for 10 people (sleeping double). But with couches, air mattresses, pack-n-play’s, ect., you could have an awful lot of people stay there. I think this would be best for a large family or group who wanted to get away together.
We liked that you were pretty close to good hiking in Smokey Mountain National Park. We went to Cherokee / Deep Creek for hiking. There’s tubing down the river. We also did the gem mining right down the road in Franklin. That was good for the kids. We even did some hiking right on the property and could have explored more.
The owner was easy to work with both via email and over the phone. The price is reasonable, especially considering how much house there is. If you want to get away and have some peace in the mountains, this would be a good spot.
Wonderful Place to Stay
If you are in to "antiquing" there are quite a few antique stores nearby. Also, if you like barbecue, Fat Buddies is a great place to eat.
