Updated: Sep 9, 2014
House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 6 Sleeps

NEW FOR 2014: Use of 2 Sea-Kayaks & Rowboat during Peak Months to qualified Guests with signed waiver!!!

Sandpiper Haven is a charming two bedroom, two bath, single story, low bank waterfront house located on world famous Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, with direct beach access , phenomenal views , a great deck, nearby boat launch, and much much more. Conveniently located between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, enjoy fabulous VIEWS south across Penn Cove of the Olympic Mountains and Coupville, and east toward the Cascades! With annual rainfall of just over 21 inches, nearly half of the regional rainfall, you can enjoy being in the rainshadow of Whidbey Island.

Sandpiper Haven is truly a bird watcher's paradise with floating flocks of resident and migratory water fowl and overhead visits by a neighboring family of eagles. For the seafood lovers, try mussel and clam digging and enjoy fishing just steps from the back door.

The day brings beautiful views of boats, seals and otters playing in the water, and of the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains rising in the distance beyond the shores of Penn Cove. To the east catch glimpses of the Cascade Mountains as well. The house is south facing to capture the warmth of the sun on a large private deck in fair weather, or inspire romance watching storm-churned waves while comfortably seated indoors by the large stone gas fireplace.

Enjoy this comfy, well-appointed and well-supplied house in a phenomenal setting. Built in 2003, this house is fully-insulated and enjoyable year-round, including holidays.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a new family and this was our official "just for the four of us" vacation. And your cabin made it perfect! Our six year-old children were thrilled to find the perfect games and toys. Kristin and I enjoyed the view, walk, and cozy times inside. Thank you.

Our favorite

  • 5 of 5
This was our third stay at Sandpiper Haven, and for good reason. It is a gem of a vacation home, and Julie and Peter are absolutely wonderful, responsive, and reliable. We have yet to find any other place where we can stay with our children in a clean, safe setting with incredible amenities and let our hair down the way we can here. We really only have to bring ourselves, some clothes, and grab groceries locally - Sandpiper Haven has everything from good linens, tea, and condiments to a great selection of outdoor toys for our kids and games, puzzles, and books for all of us. Favorite moments? Probably lounging on the incredible deck while our kids dig to their hearts' content at the quiet beach below. Or watching the sun set in the most glorious way as we enjoy a little fire and all those mysterious sounds of the settling cove at dusk. Or venturing out and kayaking along the beach, enjoying the best the Pacific NW has to offer. If you are looking for a bit of peace and quiet and a lot of serenity, then this is it. We can't wait to come back.

Beautiful house on a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time. The house had everything we needed and more.It was clean and very well maintained. We loved the fire pit and promontory (we had coffee there in the morning.) The stairway to the beach was really nice and made it easy to get to the beach. The boat ramp is hard to access at low tide without a four-wheel drive vehicle but we put in at Oak Harbor Marina which was only 15-20 minutes away. Great, relaxing way to spend a week.

Owner's Response: Dear Jeff & Maureen, So glad you enjoyed yourselves. Your boating and crabbing excursions sounded great too. Yes, the boat ramp near our house can be challenging at low tide for larger boats, but for potential Guests, please note that our two sea kayaks and rowboat stay beachside during Peak months for easy launching. Also, Guests can keep a boat moored in front of our property during their stay. These Guests brought their own boat. All our best and do come again! Julie & Peter

Perfect place to relax

  • 5 of 5
We spent a week at Penn Cove and loved every minute of it. The home was perfect for us - 3 friends - even though the weather didn't cooperate. One can relax, walk, explore, read or watch for wildlife. We visited the lavender farm, picked strawberries, visited an alpaca farm and explored the wonderful towns on Whidbey Island. We even took in an art class!! Julie and Peter are the perfect hosts!

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I agreed of all the places we have rented from VRBO or traded thru RCI this is by far the best! Even though it rained a couple of days ( as is common in this area of the country) our enthusiasm for this property was not dampened one bit. We loved the deck but the view was also just as perfect from the couch in front of a cozy fire on rainy afternoons. Lots of books, puzzles and games as well a cable Wifi. We enjoyed roasting marshmallows in the fire pit one evening and watching the eagles and sea gulls from the chairs on the secluded promontory. There was even a nice pair of binoculars and books about local birds and wild life to help us identify the unfamiliar. The boat and kayaks and all the equipment were easy to access and fun to use to explore the cove. And those are just a few of the things we enjoyed at the house. We also went on a whale watching tour, explored Coupeville and Oak Harbor, visited a lavender farm, took in the amazing view from Deception Pass and Mount Erie and enjoyed the art and café at Greenbank . Our only problem was that we couldn't stay longer!

Impeccably clean! Beautiful waterfront home!

  • 5 of 5
We felt at home immediately. In our experience renting online can be risky because you never know what you're REALLY getting. There were no unpleasant surprises. The Julie and Peter anticipate your every need and are very accommodating. This VRBO stay is our best experience to date. The property is indeed waterfront as advertised with a nice little footpath leading to the water. There is also a secluded overlook....a great place for breakfast. We watched an Eagle from the back deck, took the boat out for a spin! There are kayaks too. There's a nice fire pit with a water view. The house is very private, only one neighbor next door. The ones across the road are too far away to worry about.
We had the most quiet and relaxing weekend and will definitely plan another visit.

Beautiful stay, beautiful view-home away from home

  • 5 of 5
This was our first stay in a HomeAway-type rental and being our first rental, we were a little nervous that the experience would not match the pictures and descriptions on the web. Our fears were allayed immediately upon arrival. The house is lovely; very clean and well kept, plenty of room, with just enough decoration to create a homey atmosphere. The gardens around the home are well cared for and beautiful. It is clear the owners, Julie and Peter, are sharing a home, not just a place to stay. There is room to relax and entertain and to simply enjoy family and friends.

The owners have the rental down to a science. I was impressed by the attentiveness at all phases of the rental. All was prepared for our arrival-even down to directions. The house was well stocked, kitchen and all, with everything we needed and the beds, very comfortable.

We did not have the opportunity to take advantage of the kayaks and fire pit, but the setting of Penn Cove is just lovely. The cottage sits right on the water and each morning, we were treated to the peace and beauty of the water and when the clouds cleared, the majestic Olympic Mountains. Our stay was restorative!

Thank you, Julie and Peter for sharing this lovely place. We look forward to a return visit!
