Guestbook comments from the owner

We've just spent an amazing week in your beautiful home. Thank you for opening the doors to the past -- your home unlocked memories that we will treasure for years to come. You are a warm and caring person and your love of live and family fills each room of this dear home. Being a child of the 50s, raised in a Polish Catholic Family, I just 'connected' with so many things in here. I truly felt as if I'd come home. Thank you so much for the treats, breakfast, you are very thoughtful. We wish you and your family all the best. Thanks for the Memories! With warmest regards and heartfelt appreciation.

Vintage and retro luxury! Memories to be had!

  • 5 of 5
As a general rule with birthdays and holidays, my husband and I avoid buying physical presents for our nieces and nephews, but rather, "make memories" by doing something together - whether a one-day, overnight or just evening event. When we found the "Good Ole Days" get-a-away, we knew it would be a great Christmas present for all of us...and boy, did we score big! The kids - ranging in ages from 8-17, were so delighted with this place and Melanie's special touches that when we went into Pittsburgh to see the city at Christmas time, we left early because everyone wanted to just come "home" and enjoy the place together. What did we do during the stay? Lived. John made my mom's "blue plate special" traditional meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans and had family dinner...we peculated coffee and made cocoa and told stories, rumpused in the rumpus room, listened to records...and had a great blend of Christmas and Festivas time - oh, and always love Gabriels which is just down the road.

My husband and I have traveled extensively, and we received some of the best hospitality from Melanie AND comfortable accommodations. We love that Melanie not only has honored her family in this way but has also given others a chance to feel a part of the memories - both hers and their own. We will be back...!

Owner's Response: It was a sheer delight to be able to share a little history & decades past with your bright-eyed nieces and nephews! This is the reason for this unique house and I love that families such as yours are able to recreate a little piece of the past with your own flair and fun. The meatloaf (didn't leave me any---boo hoo) and your family dinner are memories that your nieces and nephews will remember for a long long time. These are treasures that you can't put a price on and it is so special that our Good Ol' Days has become a Christmas Home for the Holidays for you all. Looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks -- I'll put on the TV the classic Saturday Night Live DVDs from the 1970s & 80s in the Rumpus Room and perhaps The Ed Sullivan Show in the 1960s living room.!!!! The kids will love it! Safe travels. God Bless.

Unique and Delightful!

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful time. The house brings back so many memories. Staying here is a unique and delightful experience. From reviewing the website we expected a great experience but in fact staying there in person exceeded our expectations.

As for the basics, the house was very clean, the owner/manager had great customer service, and the location was easy to find. We will recommended staying here to our family and friends.

Owner's Response: Thank you!! You were wonderful guests and delighted that you enjoyed hosting both sides of your family during your "after Thanksgiving" dinner at the house. You and your husband looked just Ward & June Cleaver inside the 1950s kitchen too! So happy to hear everyone enjoyed the trip down memory lane remembering your own family good ol' days. We look forward to having you back again for another family 'reunion'.

Fun place with all the comforts of home.

  • 5 of 5
My husband, our daughters, son-in law and 2 grandchildren spent 4 days at Melanie's Fun House.
We all came from out of state to visit family. The house was lots of fun outside and inside. We never ran out of things to look at, laugh at and enjoy! Many toys and games for the adults and children. Oh, the memories.
And while the whole house was entertaining it was also very comfortable. Melanie has seen to every detail to make one feel at home, from comfortable beds and sheets to wonderful fragrant homemade soap. The bathrooms have roomy standing showers and great showers heads, lots of fluffy towels and places to hang them. There is a washer and dryer.
The house is totally suited for parties. A roomy refrigerator, freezer and a oven in the kitchen AND another oven in the rumpus room which was really convenient for our family party. Lots of kitchen towels and dish clothes. Many, many dishes, glasses, mugs, flatware, trays, nice pots and pans, extra tables and chairs. Melanie does not skimp on anything. Coffee, sugar and tea bags were also provided. No microwave, you get to go 'back in time' to reheat foods. We didn't even miss the microwave.
I expected the house to be a wonderful 'back in time' experience because of the reviews. I never expected the house to be so well equipped and comfortable.
Thank you Melanie for being an awesome host!

Fun Experience

  • 5 of 5
My two brothers and I rented the home to attend a joint class/family reunion in the Mon Valley. We came from Las Vegas, Calgary, Alberta and Tampa and wanted a fun place to stay versus staying in a hotel. It was a great decision and we loved the 50's theme home. It exceeded our expectations, Melanie was there to meet us the day we arrived and the home was clean, well appointed and fun. The location in downtown Belle Vernon was a treat to remind us of our Western PA. roots and had shopping and food facilities close by. I would recommend to others and hope they would enjoy the experience as much as we did. My only criticism is that some of the "theming items" , especially stuff on the bedroom furniture be scaled back so the guest would have more space for personal items they travel with and need those areas.

Owner's Response: Thanks Joe for your kind words! It was a pleasure to host you and your brothers during your stay! I loved the conversations about "Pittsburgh" and the memories you all shared with me about your own Good Ol' Days growing up in the 'burgh'. I appreciate your suggestion about the extra stuff in the bedrooms and will definitely keep that in mind for future guests! Thank you for being awesome guests in the house and I look forward to having you all back, in the future, for a trip back to the past here in Southwestern Pennsylvania!

A truly unique experience & trip back to the past.

A truly unique experience & trip back to the past.

It's above the ho-hum of a traditional hotel stay. Plenty of things to do and see.
If you are into history or fads of the past it's the place for you. I look forward to staying there again sometime.

Wonderful!

We had a lovely time at the "back in the day" house, as my 9 year old referred to it. We loved showing the kids what we grew up, and it was simply and pleasure.

Owner's Response: Thanks Mary Sue,
It was a pleasure to have your kids enjoy the type of fun kids had 'back in the day'! Hope you are getting ready to enjoy your summer baseball season and you're welcome to return and watch our Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnatti Reds this year! Go Reds -- but not when you're in Bucco country. Have a nice day. Stay happy & healthy!

Activity and Interests

Restaurants: There are several excellent restaurants for fine dining in the area such as close-by The Back Porch & The Speer Street Grill, Lenora's in Perryopolis, & Lucchesi's in Monessen. You can also enjoy good home-style family type restaurants, fast food and other familiar chain restaurants all less than one mile away.

Pittsburgh dining is 25 miles or a 30, 45 minute drive.

Seven Springs is less than an hour away.

There are 2 yummy pizza shops, a Dairy Queen, Bakery & Grocery Store all within walking distance. We have opened an old fashioned penny candy store & antique shop called 'SWEET NOSTALGIA ON BROAD'. It is located right across the street from the house. It features old fashioned candy favorites, unique gifts, Antiques & Collectibles.

A friendly local 'watering hole' Russ's tavern is also within walking distance on the Main Street. The owner actually lives next door and his grandfather once owned the same tavern.

Shopping: Many vintage & antique shops are close by within a few minutes or up to a 15 minute drive. We have Gabriel Brothers, which is a 'Bargain Place' to shop for name brands & closeouts.

The Brand new Tanger Outlet Mall is 20 minutes away and there are 6 Shopping Malls all within a 30 - 45 minute drive. Such as South Hills Village, Westmoreland Mall, Uniontown Mall, Franklin Mall, Century III Mall and Monroeville Mall.
