Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5
In 2011 my family and I were looking for a family vacation to suit all our needs. 1) for my husband love for the outdoors, 2) My love for sun, water, and shopping, 3) my kids love for activities. We decided on lake george. This listing it seemed to be perfect for everyone due to the size, price and location. I can not begin to tell you how pleased I have been with my experience. This house a charming Adirondack cottage. It gives you the feel a cabin but with the modern amenities such as cable, wifi, air conditioning, gas grill, etc. Helen is a great owner she even supplies some of the last min necessities that some of us would forget like, pans, plates, cups, mugs, wine opener, paper plates, spices,etc..We have two children (8 and 5) and they share the one bedroom and we stay in the master. The cabin comes with a screened porch which is my favorite parts because it is great place to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning and looking towards the lake. The house is on top of the hill so get a great view of the trees, lake, mountains. We have enjoyed many dinners BBQ'ing on the side deck which have saved us tons of money not having to eat out every night. My children and husband love to spend time on the Adirondack chairs by the fire pit. It is actually a great spot to watch the fireworks every thursday night. Helen is great and my kids always know to go look for the marshmellows and chocolate to make smores which she leaves for the guests each time. During any rainy days we all sprawled out on the pull out couch and watched movies or played games that she has. There are tons a books for some quiet time.
Coming from the city I feel a sense of ease coming to the house. I even dont mind cooking in the kitchen. It is a cute kitchen with widows looking out to the deck, a breakfast bar for the kids to watch and help mommy cook and even a dinning set where we can have family dinners.
The location of the cabin cannot be beat. You are 5 blocks from the main strip of Canada street yet far enough up the hill that you do feel all the commotion. Your are in walking distance to food and shops and arcades and a grocery store. There is a Walmart 10 min away where we go the first day and stock up on what we need. Some of the activities we like are: the beach, great escape, tubing in the lake, hike up prospect mountain, shopping at the outlets, renting a boat, bowling, minigolf, This is truly home away from home. Summer 2014 here we come

Perfect Cottage Stay

  • 5 of 5
We had read the most recent review after we had booked this cottage so we were a little nervous about what to expect when we arrived but when we got there we couldn't be happier! The cottage is rustic and a little rough but it is also full of warm little considerate touches.

First the location is perfect. It's situated at the top of one of the streets right in the village. You can look straight down the four blocks to the lake and the cruise ships. We walked right down into the village every night for shopping and dining.

The landscaping and patio were perfect. It rained every day while we were there so we didn't get to enjoy the patio as much as we would have liked but we did get to have a fire every night! There is a propane grill available for use and we grilled at least once a day.

The Screened in sun room was great for morning coffee, especially with the electric fireplace there to warm our toes. It also made a rainy evening more bearable being able to sit together and play board games.

The living/dining room and kitchen were very homey feeling and warmly decorated with lots of wood, really giving you that camping feel. The kitchen was surprisingly well stocked and had everything we needed. There is a wood burning stove with a gas insert in the living room that quickly warms up the entire house. We never even needed the space heaters that Helen had put in every room even though the temps dropped down into the low 40's at night.

The second floor has two, sparsely decorated bedrooms and the bathroom. The rooms both had doubles/fulls and had pillows and blankets. one bedroom does not have a door and there is instead a room divider used to provide privacy.

The bathroom has a small shower stall which could be tight for very large or older people. I'm a big guy and was able to maneuver around pretty well but i could see how it could be difficult for someone larger than myself.

All in all my family and me had a wonderful time. The cottage offers so much more than all of the housekeeping cottages available all while being significantly less expensive.

DO NOT rent this property

  • 1 of 5
I would not recommend renting this property. The only plus side to this house is the location. Although I can also say dealing with the homeowner was pleasant too. BUT once my husband and I arrived with my mother in law the house was filthy. It is definitely not maintained properly. My mother in law and I spent the first 2 days of our vacation cleaning....not what I want to do while away! It was so bad that the 3 of us considered getting a hotel stay for the rest of the week. Just to list a few things.... It has 2 bedrooms but one room has no door on it. Neither one of us fit in the shower it was so small plus it was dark bc there is no light near the shower. The couch cover was dis colored and had pet hair all over it. The light in the Living room is broke (so you sit in the dark). The bottom cabinets have exposed insulation from the wall (bc the wall is not enclosed) where the pots are being stored. The list goes on but all I'm saying is it's not worth it. Rent another home !!!!!!!

Owner's Response: Apparently this reviewer has no idea what the Adirondacks are! Yes there are two bedroom upstairs as you can see in the pictures. Yes, one does not have a door but a quaint ADK style screen. It is too narrow to put in a door. The larger bedroom has a new door. The fiberglass shower is new as of 4/13. Yes, it is a genuine ADK camp so the bathroom is small...but limited elbow room! There is also new wiring put in last year throughout the whole camp with 3 outside floods installed. There are two lamps and two overhead lights in the living I can't believe the living room could be dark. If one bulb goes out, there is a supply of light bulbs in the kitchen cupboard so the bulb that was out could certainly have been changed!

The couch cover was clean. I don't anything about it being "covered with hair"????

Insulation is exposed under one cupboard but it is that foam filler. The camp is not insulated as if is only a summer rental.

As you can see from the photographs, the tired stone landscaping is beautiful, only two years old with a build in firepit. There is a new deck with a glass table for six and a gas grill. There is also a charming "ice cream window" to pass food etc from the kitchen to the outside deck.

I also understand that people have different ideas of what is clean. I am a nurse practitioner and certainly know the meaning cleanliness. The house is 75 years old and very charming because of it. We have been renting the house for 5 years and have never had a complaint before. It is as advertised, the quintessential charming Adirondack Camp.

Last summer a family from Denmark rented it. When I was telling her about all the money/upgrades ($25,000) we had put into in the last two years, she said, Helen, promised me this. Never do anything to alter it's charm!

If the reader wants a square, sterile room I recommend they do not rent "Sunrise Camp" but travel down the street to the Budget Inn (they will probably pay more!!

I totally thank the recent reviewer for the excellent comments and for trusting the looks of the pictures and our conversations together. WE are proud of the camp and are always thrilled that all out hard work is so enthusiastically appreciated!!!!

Beautiful lake house

  • 4 of 5
My family had a very enjoyable stay at this beautiful cottage. We especially enjoyed the screened front porch for reading and entertaining. The property was well cared for and the gardens were enchanting. The beds were somewhat small(double/full size) and a little difficult for my elderly parents. This would be a wonderful vacation spot for young families. The paddle boat was very enjoyable and the lake was beautiful. The fireworks on Saturday nights are an added bonus. Overall I would say that we had a very relaxing and restful vacation and I would highly recommend this property to young families.
