House, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Baths, 5 Sleeps

'Simply - the most beautiful place in the world,' says Charles Pratt, author of Here on the Island published 1974. This home dons the cover of Pratt’s popular hard cover book of an island of incredible character and natural beauty. Gooden Grant’s Home is one of the most photographed locations on an island that is home to 50 year round residents and half the island is forever wild Acadia National Park land.

Named after the original owner, a notorious lobster fisherman working the territory well into his 90s, the Gooden Grant Home provides abundant land, sea, and fresh water recreation, an inspirational retreat for historians, writers, photographers, and artists, or a family getaway complete with a safe harbor of gentle waves and a length of beach full of ocean treasures for young minds and hands – sea glass, sand dollars, hermit crabs, rock crabs and more.

The Gooden Grant House is available for up to two weeks rental during 2016.

Isle Au Haut Downeast and Acadia

Great home in an amazing place

  • 5 of 5
We had a great week at the Grant Gooden House in August 2014 with our toddler. Isle au Haut is a great place for kids and we look forward to our son developing a more adventurous spirit over more trips. For now he was very happy to play on the porch, wade on the beach, splash in Long Pond, and pretend to drive a pick up truck. All great vacation-only experiences.

We'd been curious about the island for years and are so glad we took the leap. We've spent lots of time in other parts of Maine and were still wowed by the beauty and quirks of Isle au Haut. Get your hands on some of the Isle au Haut related books from Penobscot Bay Press before you go. You will be fascinated when you set foot there and will want to learn as much history as possible.

The remote location really let us focus on relaxing but Ellard provides some key amenities that are downright luxurious. His cappuccino machine is WAY undersold. Its by far the most sophisticated cappuccino machine i've ever been allowed to operate. You can bring whole beans! The Wi-fi works well and allows for all-important recipe googling since you're planning all your meals from the provisions you brought and the things you can find on the island. This was actually a really fun highlight for us. What a great excuse for blueberry pancakes every morning! The shower leaves nothing to be desired and the composting toilet is really not an issue. Bring bug repellant and use it earlier in the day than usual.

Definitely rent the truck. Only drive the loop road through the park when you're in the mood for a slow scenic ride -- which you will be, often, unless you're trying to make it to Black Dinah Chocolatiers before Sunday brunch ends -- that race against the clock for a lobster benedict was the most stressful segment of our week.

If you get to spend time on Isle au Haut you are very lucky, if you spend it at the Grant Gooden House you are among a very happy few.

Perfect Location for an Amazing Vacation!

  • 5 of 5
Location, Location, Location! It doesn't get much better than the Gooden Grant House. The house is located on Head Harbor, which in our opinion is the best spot on the island. The beach at Head Harbor is perfect for looking for sea glass and for children to play in the calm surf of the protected harbor. Long Pond is a short walk, and a wonderful and much warmer spot to swim. It even has a raft to swim out to.

There are beautiful views of the harbor from almost every room in the house. We found that we couldn't sleep in late even if we wanted to as the peacefulness of sitting on the front porch each morning with a cup of coffee was more enticing. Raspberries and blueberries were plentiful and made for amazing pancakes!

There were hiking trails right from the house that would have you looking at amazing open ocean views within 5 minutes. A short hike (or drive) and you would be in the Acadia section of the island with even more variety of hiking trails, each one more spectacular than the last. One of our favorites was the Cliff Trail. We found that it would take us hours as we would just have to stop and watch the ocean time and time again.

The town of Isle au Haut is most charming and Shore Shop Gifts had a wonderful selection of souvenirs, not to mention unbelievable prices on Lobster!!

We cannot wait to return!

Owner's Response: The price of lobster on Isle au Haut is ALWAYS a bargain! Some folks order up Shore Shop lobsters every day.

A special place for everyone

The Gooden Grant House is one of the historic landmarks of the incredible Isle au Haut experience. Located at the very southern point of Isle au Haut it is situated for easy access to hiking in Acadia National Park, the pond, Boom Beach and for the watching of the tides and exploring the sand beach. There are wide open views of the ocean harbor and forest from every window, making the house bright, even on a cloudy day. Nights are star filled from this vantage point. Plenty of room to entertain, with a dining room and all the kitchen cookware/dishes aplenty. This house has an incredible library, books are just everywhere, something for everyone! The bedrooms are upstairs all appointed with linens, a steep staircase, but lighted. The shower and toilet are separate. Lots of towels and plenty of hot water. If you are not accustomed to earth friendly composting etc., you may be daunted by the clivus toilet. [please look it up]. Food and trash are composted easily. The owner couldn't be more helpful and a pleasure to talk with. He stays close by just in case you might need something. The list of amenities gives you more information. One can access wi-fi, but try to forget it. Bring your own bike, another great way to explore IAH. Head Harbor is the furthest away from "town"..about 6 miles, so paying extra for the truck is 1000% worth it. You can buy groceries, go to the library, use the Island's pc. There are community events, so be sure to check the calendars. While I mention the house accommodates families with children and teenagers, be advised the small Head Harbor community is quiet and serene, and one should be respectful of that.

With all of this written, I have tried to be objective, for I have been coming to the island for almost 30 years and was thrilled to have the chance to stay here. I just love to walk and drink in the nature. IAH is spectacular. I hope staying here at this wonderful house will make you love it as much as I do!
