Neat place!

  • 4 of 5
Out of the Wild is really a neat place. For clarification, the house does not contain six bedrooms and five bathrooms as this listing implies. There are actually three different structures on the property so you may be sharing the outdoor space with other people. We stayed in the largest of the three rental houses and thought it was both clean and comfortable. The owners met us when we arrived and were very kind.

We were lucky (or unlucky - depending on how you look at it!) enough to stay in Talkeetna during one of the warmest weeks of the summer with daytime highs in the mid 80s. There was only one fan in the Mountain House and many windows either did not open or did not have screens. Wow, it got uncomfortably hot inside! We would have spent more time outside but the mosquitoes were truly terrible. (Of course, the owners can't do anything about the bugs.)

There also seemed to be a problem with the hot water heater or boiler. Two of the four people in our group were able to get warm showers each day. The other two were left with nothing but very cold water. This would be the one thing that stops me from renting this property again - esp. if I am traveling with a larger group.

Complaints aside, the property has an amazing view of Mt. Foraker, Mt. Hunter, and Mt. McKinley. It was a great place for our out of state visitors to take in the beauty of Alaska. The owners brought us fresh milk and pastries which we really appreciated.

Owner's Response: We appreciate guest reviews and respond quickly to suggestions for improvement - for example, we have screens installed in windows that open. We spend many months of the year trying to keep our homes warm, so it is was very unusual to have such hot weather, and sadly, our more typical weather has returned and it is cool enough in the mornings to require some heat! The three fans we purchased have not been used by our guests since that week! Such is the weather in Alaska. Not sure what to make about the hot water comments - we have hot water on demand and have not encountered a shortage but will check with our guests to make sure since it was mentioned.
