Fernandina Beach is Amelia Island's only town, settled by the French in 1562. Eight flags later, it now belongs to the USA. Downtown was platted in 1853 by David Yulee for his Florida Railroad. The original Spanish town plan remains with buildings dating back to the mid 1800s. Fernandina Beach looks across the harbor to Cumberland Island, GA and Kings Bay Navy base in St. Marys, GA. It is not uncommon to watch a Trident Submarine with its escort ships enter the jetty at the north end of our island.
