Wonderful Home, Difficult Owner

  • 2 of 5
First the positive, the home is very nice. We were four adults and were very comfortable. Parties larger than 5 or 6 might not be comfortable, since the living room seats only three and the dining room seats only four. However, the size was perfect for us. The beds were comfortable, and the kitchen was well-appointed. The house is in a residential area that is not within easy walking distance of any stores or restaurants. Also there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood, so walking in the road is required. Just something to keep in mind.

On the downside, the owner does not include in the listing that although he does accept Paypal, he'll charge you extra for using it. (Probably a violation of this websites rules because he doesn't advertise that fee.) He tried to convince us to send him personal checks - which offered us no protection in case of any problems - and we declined. We were glad we insisted on Paypal because of how he behaved later. *Always insist on a Paypal or credit card transaction.*

More problems after we left. We cleaned the house from top to bottom the morning we departed, even making the beds, washing the dishes, and taking all the trash to the shed. Still the owner tried to keep part of our deposit, complaining that the house was messy and that he had to "do the beds." (If that means washing the bedding, is he normally not doing that?) He also tried to claim some non-existent damages. Lucky for us we took extensive photos of the home just before we left because we're always careful with person-to-person rentals. Once he found out we had photos, he backed off and we got our money back. (We're happy to provide those photos to anyone who asks.)

We had a wonderful time in Estes Park, and the house is very nice, which is why we're giving it two stars. Still, there are many nice homes in the area with owners who do not behave this way. For future renters, we highly recommend using Paypal instead of personal check and photographing the home extensively before you leave.

Owner's Response: Very difficult customers to deal with. First of all, there was no complaints about anything during their stay, even after. The review in our guest book proves that. Until we told them about the cleaning fee. We do charge a $250 deposit which is refundable minus cleaning and any damages. Emails on file prove that the customer understood this before renting the place.
Providing a bill from the cleaning company, we try to made the customer understand that by making the beds and taking the trash out is helping but not leaving the place spotless for the next customers. Unless you wash the linens, take the trash to the dump, scrub the toilets and the showers, vacuum, mop the floors, clean the carpets etc... Pictures were not provided so their statement of us backing off is not accurate. There was a damage to the dvd cabinet for which they were not charged!!! (pictures were taken and put on file). We even took $25 off the cleaning bill and send the rest of the deposit. They didn't mention our generosity and our ... loss!
The transaction with PayPal are done in a very professional way, meaning PayPal is charging a fee (not us!!!) for each transfer is made, unless is a direct deposit from the their bank account to the email address provided by the owner. There is no violation of the Guidelines of the website, it's just how the PayPal works. The customer agreed (emails on file) that the fee PayPal charged us to be taken from their deposit. Honestly we do prefer checks because we can see if they balance out and what kind of customers we have to deal with.
Therefore, some customers are hard to please no matter what you do. The reviews below prove that we did everything in our power to make our customer happy. But some of them we can't no matter what we do.

Great Family Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at this property was amazing! The house was just perfect for our family vacation. All three bedrooms were very private which was great since we had two couples and my mother in law. There was also a pullout couch in the living room for our friend who stayed over a few nights from Boulder. The house was very clean and the decorations inviting. The kitchen is large and we were able to cook most of our meals for the week. We also brought our dog and the house was very dog friendly. There is a dog door on the back door which leads out to a fenced in back yard. This worked out great for us! There is also a table and chairs in the back to enjoy the Colorado weather. There is also a beautiful front porch to relax on. We often saw wildlife from here. One morning there were about 15 Elk that walked right past us eating the vegetation! The area is also great. We were close to everything in Estes Park (downtown shopping, Estes Park Lake, Fun Park with Putt Putt, etc). You also have a decent view of the mountains from the property which was beautiful. We also spent a day at the Rocky Mountain National Park which was wonderful. Boulder is only about 45 minutes away as well. I can not say enough about the owner of the property. He was extremely accommodating and quick to get back to us when we had any questions. We appreciated his hospitality so much as it made our trip that much more enjoyable. We will definitely be back to this house for our next stay in Colorado!

Watching the Fourth of July from the porch

  • 5 of 5
What a surprise when we arrived at our Rental in Estes Park. The porch catches your attention as soon as you turn into the driveway. Wonderful flower arrangement along with bird feeders and relaxing chairs and couch. Inside the kitchen had everything you could possible want. The house is nicely decorated and makes you feel like your are in a cabin. You are close to Estes Lake. We were able to sit on the porch and watch the 4th of July fireworks. We were close by for the Rooftop Top Rodeo. Also not far from the Rocky Mountain National Park entrance. The flowers were in bloom during our ride up Trail Ridge Road. We also saw Elk, Moose and Marmot during our trip. There was a refreshing rain storm each afternoon during our stay.

Pleasantly Charming House

  • 5 of 5
This was a very clean, comfortable, nicely decorated house that had all the amenities of home. In addition to the amenities listed, there were unexpected items provided such as coffee, tea, paper products, sewing kit, first aid kit, DVDs, games, etc., which were nice touches. The property is advertised as having 2 twin beds in one of the rooms; however, we were pleasantly surprised that it actually had a queen mattress, as we had 5 adults (2 couples). The beds in all three bedrooms were very comfortable, and the showers were great (we did not try out the jacuzzi bath tub). My son also brought a small dog, so we definitely needed a place that was pet friendly (you would be surprised at the number of properties who do not allow pets). The house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, and is a short drive to downtown.

One thing to be forewarned about: this property advertises a magnificent view of the Rocky Mountains. While it does have a nice deck to sit on and enjoy the outdoors, you won't see much of a view from it (there is a house right next door and trees that block most of the view).

Despite this, we would still definitely recommend staying here, if you aren't concerned about a view of the river or mountains. The price was reasonable, and the owner was very prompt in responding to our initial inquiry, as well as returning our deposit.
