Buyer/Renter Beware!

Buyer/Renter Beware We rented this condo owned by Ms. Mike Jesse for Thanksgiving week 2014. Not only was there no one there to check us in or give us any instructions, we did not have hot water for two days or an adequate amount of basic supplies i.e. toilet paper, paper towels or dishwasher soap, the condo was unclean (beer bottles and underwear under the beds) as well as rotten bags of trash in the garage with four month old dated weekly magazines stacked on top of the trash. If this were a hotel, I would have checked out, never to return. In addition, the blinds were missing slats in all of the bedrooms and the living room as well. One bedroom window had no sun covering at all. We had to put sheets over the top of the windows in two of the bedrooms to block the view from the street at night.

Upon leaving the condo, there was no one there to check us out. Later that week, we were accused of doing almost $400 worth of damage. Some of the damage was already done when we arrived, i.e. missing blind slats (in all four rooms), chipped plates and a broken chair (with a "Do Not Sit" sign already on it.) But, we were also accused of having caused damage that was done after we left (broken plastic plants/trees) that seems bizarre to me.

Mr Jesse's representative Ms Klein/O'Neill said my "unsupervised children" did the damage. These two children 14 and 16 are both AP/honor students who are also nationally ranked athletes. My children did not even go into two of the bedrooms with missing/broken blinds. I also did not appreciate the tone of the responses my mother and I received when we contested the charges.

To be clear, I am not saying that Mr Jesse or Ms Klein/O'Neill know who committed the damage or were aware of the preexisting damage. They may be far removed from what happens at the condo on a day-today basis -- I cannot say one way or the other. What I am saying is that we did not commit the damage, and that I do not feel were given a real opportunity to contest the claims that we did so and our reputations were questioned. We have collectively rented over 50 homes/condos and apartments all over the world. We have never been accused of doing anything like this or ever had any deposit taken. I see now we were naïve. We decided to make the best of a vacation in an accommodation that was far from up to standard in my experience. To be accused of damaging these accommodations in this fashion is infuriating.
