About the Owner

As a young person I dreamed of living in the Sierra Nevadas. During the college summer break of the year I turned 21 I found a summer job in Murphys on a ranch. Later that summer I worked my way up to registrar and book-keeper at the Murphies hotel and volunteered at the local veterinary clinic. It was an idealic summer and I planned to return after I finished college. Several years later my girlfriend (Rebecca whom I married) and I began rented a cabin in the Arnold area and invited a group of about 10 of our friends for winter break. That became a tradition which lasted for about 15 years. Rebecca and I are veterinarians living in Santa Barbara.

Welcome to our Cabin. We hope you have enjoyed your stay and that you

found everything in order. Please let us know if anything needs to be

repaired or if you have ideas on how to make the mountain experience more

pleasant. Since we rely on a number of outside services to clean the cabin,

plow the snow and do some of the upkeep, we appreciate knowing from you

whether they are doing their job well. Come back in the summer and enjoy

relaxing in lakes, rivers, redwoods and the high sierras.

Very comfortable home. Great décor and well maintained. I especially appreciated the comfortable beds and pillows. Location was good for all the beautiful lakes and hiking. So nice to stay under the Big Trees. Next time we're staying longer. The owner even called to make sure everything was OK.

beautiful cabin, great for kids

  • 5 of 5
This is a lovely, well maintained cabin with everything you need for a relaxing vacation. It has an open floor plan, comfortable beds and furniture, beautiful pottery, and an excellent collection of books and games. The location is fantastic in walking distance from Big Trees State Park, with so much to do in the surrounding area. We would love to return in summer and winter.

Simply majestic!

We arrived to this beautiful, majestic cabin. It was so warm, cozy & obviously filled with love! It's set along the edge of Big Trees Park, so as you can imagine, you are surrounded by amazing trees. There was snow when we arrived & everything was pure white! The kids had a blast sledding in the front yard!! All you need to bring w/ you are bed sheets, towels, paper goods & food. This cabin has EVERYTHING else! I also loved all the gorgeous handmade pottery by the owner, Ron. We are already planning our summer trip back to this cabin!

Nice cabin near Arnold.

  • 4 of 5
This is a standard cabin for the Arnold area( have been going up there since I was a kid). We were 2 small families. It worked great for us. Not fancy, but nice and clean and tucked back in a quiet corner of big trees village. It is common to have to supply your own linens in arnold area cabins. it is a mild hassle, so pay attention to that detail. The good part is you know what kind of sheets you are getting :). It is part of keeping the price down.
You can access a fire road into big trees state park, which we used with our mountain bikes. It is a very hilly area though for biking with kids. I love big trees village for families: their rec center is great. Be sure to join in the inner tube water polo games on M-W-F at 4:30!
Also, you just drive down boards crossing road to get to the stanislaus river( cold and beautiful). Ron was very helpful in giving advice on how to enjoy the area. Lake Utica was our favorite and we look forward to going back there. Arnold is a great little mountain town. They have built a pretty single track multi use trail leaving out of the white pines lake area, going down to Avery. It is a great area for families and the beautiful out doors.

Mountain retreat for families!

  • 4 of 5
Spacious, clean. Great for families. Wish we planned on staying longer. The towel/linen accommodations are the only downside. We got charged for towels that we did not take. Just make sure you count the towels! Otherwise, we had a great stay! Ron, although we never met him, was very responsive. Beautiful part of the country.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review or vacation home. Glad you had a great time and we would welcome you back. I agree that its a good idea to count the towels etc. that you get and that you return. I just want to clarify that the towels/linens were from an outside service and your dispute was with them. I did not hold back any funds from the damage deposit for these items. After you paid them directly for the towels that they said you had lost I offered to pay you back if you felt that you were sure you had not lost them.

From the Owner

Rebecca and I continued coming to this area every summer, staying at Cal Berkeley family camp near Strawberry Lake for about 12 years when our children were young. When the kids got older we decided to buy a cabin. We wanted to be near the beautiful Big Trees at Calaverous State Park, close to the Stanislaus River, high enough to get some snow during the winter and close enough to easily drive to Bear Valley Ski Resort in the winter. Big Trees Village was the perfect location and its large, quite, heavily forested lots were just what we were looking for. We are retiring this year and hope to finially be able to fill that childhood dream of Living in the Sierras, at least for part of the year.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Barpub : Arnold at 5 Miles Nearest Golf : Arnold at 5 Miles Nearest Motorway : highway 4 at 2 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Arnold at 5 Miles Nearest Ski : Bear Valley at 20 Miles Nearest Beach : Stanisalus River, Lake Alpine, New Melones Res. at 2 Miles

We are 1000 feet higher elevation and 4 miles up the hill from Arnold CA in Big Trees Village or Dorrington, (1124 Kiowa Court). We get more snow in the winter than Arnold and are 10 minutes closer to Bear Valley ski resort, Calaverous Redwood State Park, lake Alpine, Lake Utica and Spicer Reservoir and the kids Snow Park. Our development is right above the Stanislaus River and has easy summer access right from the development. Because we are higher than Arnold we often get snow that sticks around for a long time when Arnold has slush or rain. In the summer the elevation keeps the temperature from getting too hot. Big Trees Village is quieter, more forested, larger more private lots and in general a more peaceful area tin which to o hike, walk around the neighborhood or vacation. Our large lot is on an extremely quiet corner just across the street from homes that boarder Big Trees State Redwood Park. Arnold is not too far away for shopping and going out to dinner but just far enough (10 minutes) to feel that you are not vacationing in the city.

All year round, walk among the giant Sequoias in Big Trees National Park, In the winter ski Bear Valley, California's most family-oriented ski resort, Cross Country ski snowshoe or sled at Bear Valley Recreation area, through Calaveras Big Trees State Park, or in the many wilderness areas of the Stanislaus National Forest, In the summer enjoy the renowned California Gold Country wineries and museums, A hikers paradise, Excellent, close access to Stanislaus River at two locations, Golfing available in Arnold and nearby Blue Lake Springs, Historic Murphys and Columbia Gold Mining Towns are just down the hill, Enjoy National Parks and Recreation areas, lake and river fishing, the rugged Stanislaus River, magical Lake Alpine in the high Sierras, boating and unlimited hiking or biking at your back door, Explore nearby Mercer Caverns or Moaning Caves for a unique adventure, Boating and skiing at New Melones Lake

From the Owner

Five miles closer to Sking than Arnold. More likely in the winter to have nice quality snow at the cabin than lower down in Arnold (1000 ft lower). At 5000 feet elevation has a cooler more comfortable summer climate. Much more forested, more wildlife and secluded than the housing around Arnold. Closer to Stanislaus River access, Lakes, Redwood State Park, and hiking than the Arnold area. All around a nicer place to hang out in nature. Great walks right in the neighborhood.
