Location, location, location! This is perfect! Amazing views of dolphins and sunsets!

  • 5 of 5
Arrived in the afternoon with 3 adults and kids age 16, 12, 10 and 7. The 3rd floor unit was just like the photos. Kona Makai was our fabulous home for 9 days. First things first, kids chose their beds in the loft. The adults chose the bedrooms. No need for air conditioning with all the fans and ocean breezes! The only reason a tv was turned on at an point during our trip was to watch the Olympics- when we were home we all hung out on the wraparound lanai. The view was simply breathtaking! In the mornings we had coffee watching the spinner dolphins flipping out of the water. At night, we watched the sunset from the lanai or from the oceanfront lounge chairs. The property surrounding the pool and parking lot is very well maintained with some gorgeous brilliant foliage. The swaying palms are a reminder of paradise- also kept groomed. Having spent time in Kona previously, this location is perfect. Nice walks in either direction bring you to beaches and surfing or into town. We packed lunches for our day trips all over the island and the stores like Safeway, are close driving distance. We spent a couple days just hanging out by the pool and relaxing and there were more than enough lounge chairs available in the pool area. The pool and hot tub temperatures were just right. Hot hot tub, not too cold pool! The condo had all the necessary kitchen items for cooking dinner every night. The washer and dryer work great and there were more than enough towels for our family. The photos on vrbo are right on. The owner is so nice. Green sand and south point are a must see. Waipio valley and the brewing company in Waimea are also must do's. Adventurous and relaxing trip with a very comfortable condo in a perfect location!

Loved the condo, location, and ocean/sunset views.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kona Makai condo. We were pleasantly surprised that the condo was so roomy and very comfortable, and more than met our expectations from the description in the listing. Loved the size of the kitchen, we felt it was larger than some other condos we have stayed in. Fantastic ocean views, wrap-around lanai, perfect for whale watching and viewing ocean sports, paddlers, para-sailing, etc. The condo grounds were meticulously well kept, the pool and barbecue area were very nice. Access to activities/shopping, and restaurants was just minutes away, not to mention beach activities. The manager was very accommodating, born and raised on the BI, we actually had mutual acquaintances. We would recommend the condo to friends and relatives, and in fact, look forward to returning next year if it is still available. We look forward to visiting family and friends on the BI, and the condo is in a great location to do so.

Kona Makai-Condo

Kona Makai-Condo

We came to Kona Makai in the afternoon and carried our bags to the door, when we opened the door we were totally surprise by the open space and fantastic view which was right to the ocean with five or six silhouetting palm tress. We completely enjoyed our stay and the nightly sunset activities were perfect (saw three green flashes) the condo also has a great pool and hot tube. We met the owners and want to complement them on their timely rental communications. We whole-heartedly recommend this condo. The location is quiet, well maintained and it is walking distance to Kona.

Thank you for sharing your lovely condo!

Some Good, Some Not So Much

  • 3 of 5
There are things about this condo that are great -- the view and location, in particular. Kona Makai is very close to Kona town, with easy access to all the great things Hawaii has to offer. And the view from the lanai is fantastic -- true ocean front, a great view of the shore and the sunset. It is indeed a great place to enjoy a morning coffee or evening cocktail. Also, the pool and hot tub in the complex were nice and the neighbors were friendly.

On the other hand, there were also things about this unit that were very disappointing. The furnishings were uniformly old, worn, and cheap. It looked like the place was furnished 25 years ago and never updated (except for the TV). The unit was not terribly clean -- walking around the condo barefoot, the bottoms of your feet would get grimy. Overall it was just not a really home-y place to spend time.

The owner was pleasant and helpful, but she would do well to invest a little money into updating the place. It could be an amazing oasis with a little more effort.

Owner's Response: Location, view and spacious outdoor living makes staying at the condo feel like paradise. The furnishings are periodically updated but it still may not meet everyone's perception or their full expectations of what it should be. There was a huge wave and high wind warnings during December which caused the tile flooring to feel gritty/grimy due to condensation of salt. Any housekeeping issue is easily resolved with a phone call to me and or to the housekeeper with 13+ years of experience. The condo is close to Kona town and easy access to all the great things Hawaii has to offer.

This is a wonderful condo to stay in while visiting Hawaii. Everything was immaculate and it was so wonderful to enjoy the lanai while having coffee or dinner prepared on the BBQ. Relaxing on the lounge chairs watching both the surf and the stars was truly fabulous. Our boys (13 &15) had a great time in the pool too! The owner was so accommodating and our stay was truly fabulous and the condo is very convenient.

Great Kona location, in quiet complex

  • 4 of 5
We chose this large waterfront condo in Kona because we wanted lots of space, oceanfront, top floor and a large, well supplied kitchen. It was certainly all of that. The location, just south of Kona, was perfect and you can walk to town no problem. The condo has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, so lots of room for 2 adult couples. Very quiet, adult oriented building. After 10.30 at night, you don't hear a sound. The grounds are beautifully kept up, with a crew working it every morning. The suite itself is a little worn, the bedding needs to be updated but the beds were very comfortable and the cross breeze keeps it cool. The whole place needs a bit of a thorough cleaning and updating. But it worked well for all of us for 9 nights. The owner was very responsive to my questions and called me back right away when we wanted to do a late check out. Excellent. I would recommend this place to friends no problem and feel for the price and the size and the view, you get good value.

From the Owner

We love the view and being on the water and watching the dolphins and whales and sunsets. The building and all its amenities are immaculately maintained and since it is a concrete construction, it is very quiet.
