Frangipani-Villa Private Ocean View Villa in Carriacou, the Grenadines

Property Details

Updated: Nov 29, 2014
villa 5 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms, sleeps 10

Tucked into a hillside immediately above the bay and set among flowering and fruit trees this spacious ocean view island villa has just been elegantly remodeled and comprehensively renovated to provide an elegant and private retreat for its guests. Not surprising, Frangipani-Villa is the choice of discerning clients. This villa features a spacious, open floor plan, covered patio, sun deck, and ocean view bedrooms. There are sweeping vistas across Hillsborough Bay to the uninhabited out-islands and unparalleled sunsets. A private plunge pool adjoining the main living area make this the perfect indoor/outdoor base from which to enjoy Carriacou and explore the surrounding islands.

The driveway comes directly to the main house entrance, making this villa particularly suitable for elderly or handicapped guests. A side gate through the gardens leads to a track through the trees to Tom's Bay or use the main gate for a similar stroll to the near-deserted half mile beach at Sparrow Bay.

Carriacou is the most southerly of the Grenadines, situated 20 miles north of Grenada, latitude 12.5 degrees. It has an area of 13 square miles and is the largest of the chain of islands between Grenada and St. Vincent. The first settlers, the Amerindians appropriately referred to Carriacou as the 'Land of Reefs'. Carriacou is one of the 3 islands that makes up the tri-island Nation of Grenada. (The 3 islands are Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique).

History: Carriacou was settled by the French, though in 1763 was ceded with Grenada to the British. The majority of the inhabitants today are of African descent, with the influence in the island mainly British, such as driving on the left, though French names are still noticed, especially in the L'Esterre area. The village of Windward is home to the descendant of a group of Scottish boat builders who settled here in the 19th century. The Scottish names and boat building skills have been passed down through the generations.

Many locally built boats from small fishing sloops to large trading schooners are seen in the Carriacou waters.

Culture: Carriacou is rich in cultural history and has as part of its legacy the Big Drum and Quadrille dances. Before the arrival of Europeans, Grenada was inhabited by Carib Indians who had driven the more peaceful Arawaks from the island. Columbus landed on Grenada in 1498 during his third voyage to the new world. He named the island 'Concepcion.' The origin of the name 'Grenada' is obscure but it is likely that Spanish sailors renamed the island for the city of Granada. By the beginning of the 18th century, the name 'Grenada,' or 'la Grenade' in French, was in common use. Partly because of the Carib Indians, Grenada remained uncolonized for more than 100 years after its discovery; early English efforts to settle the island were unsuccessful. In 1650, a French company founded by Cardinal Richelieu purchased Grenada from the English and established a small settlement.

After several skirmishes with the Caribs, the French brought in reinforcements from Martinique and defeated the Caribs, the last of whom leaped into the sea rather than surrender. The island remained under French control until its capture by the British in 1762, during the Seven Years' War. Grenada was formally ceded to Great Britain in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris. Although the French regained control in 1779, the island was restored to Britain in 1783 by the Treaty of Versailles.

Although Britain was hard pressed to overcome a pro-French revolt in 1795, Grenada remained British for the remainder of the colonial period. During the 18th century, Grenada's economy underwent an important transition. Like much of the rest of the West Indies, it was originally settled to cultivate sugar, which was grown on estates using slave labor.

Agriculture: In 1782, Sir Joseph Banks, the botanical adviser to King George III, introduced nutmeg to Grenada.

About the Owner

We consider Grenada "home" and it continues to remind us of the carefree happy times spent as children with family and friends who like us, continue to return. Of all the places visited it's the caribbean and in particular Carriacou and the Grenadines because of the spectacular views, quiet, relaxing ambience and friendly people. There is nothing more breathtaking than a day trip to several of the uninhabited out islands and Tobago Keys to enjoy a leisurly day of snorkeling and swimming with the turtles and enjoying the beautiful marine wildlife and clear blue waters.

Absolutely Stunning Views!

  • 5 of 5
Our family of four just returned home from Frangipani Villa in Carriacou where we spent Christmas this year. We loved everything about our experience, starting from the first phone call with Corine Milne, the owner. Corinne's hospitality even extended to decorating the villa with Christmas lights on the deck for the kids, as well as subtle little Noel and reindeer items throughout the house. Corine even went our and bought beach toys for the kids as well and arranged a trip for us to Sandy Beach one day with her friends Gary and Alex at Deefer Diving. The villa is pristine throughout, with sweeping views from every vantage point. We LOVED the island, the people, the beaches, and even those bumpy country roads. What a discovery. Anse La Roche and Tobago Marine Caye are a MUST for day trips. Thank you Corine, and Down Island with Shirley and Linkie who met us at the ferry and welcomed us to the villa. I hope we will return to your very special home one day! Jane Dobisz

Amazing villa with fantastic views.

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at Villa Frangipani for 12 days at the beginning of December and cannot emphasize enough the beauty of the villa and the fantastic experience in general with the villa, island and owner. We travel to the Caribbean several times a year and have been to most Caribbean islands. In our experience, typically pictures make the places look better than reality. In the case of Frangipani Villa, the description and photos on the website just do not convey the full beauty of this villa and the island.

We were met at the villa by Nurlyn from Down Island Realty and the housekeeper Shirley and were literally in awe as we walked into the front door and saw the ocean view from the wall of windows. The entire villa is spotlessly clean, the kitchen is stocked with everything you can possibly need, the bedrooms and baths are beautifully furnished. All windows and doors are screened to keep bugs out but let the fresh air in. Corine and Christofer, the owners, have spared no expense in this property. Corine, was wonderful to work with from the time we booked the villa until we checked out (and even after!). made us feel so welcome in her house and on her island, I don’t think we’ve ever felt that way at any other villa we’ve stayed at in the past. After losing power, one quick call to Nurlyn at the rental agency and she had made a trip to manually open the driveway gate (the gate keeps cows out of the yard!) and the power company to resolve the issue very quickly! Shirley did a great job and was always smiling and friendly.

Carriacou is a wonderful unspoiled island. The island people are very kind and friendly. We drove all over the island, shopped at the little fruit stands, and shopped in the local groceries (shopping typically involves stops at all 4 Hillsboro grocery stores and Patti’s gourmet deli but you should be able to find what you need), never did we feel unwelcome or unsafe. Restaurants that we found wonderful were Boggle’s Roundhouse and Lazy Turtle in Tyrell Bay. Corine has left information on activities and suggestions for things to do, but undoubtedly, you’ll want to spend time relaxing in the villa’s ocean view pool or sitting on undisturbed Paradise Beach.

If you are looking for a gorgeous villa, with amazing views on an island of friendly laid back people, I would absolutely recommend Villa Frangipani. We will be back and for a longer stay next time!

Crazy about Frangipani!

  • 5 of 5
We have had the pleasure of staying at Frangipani on 4 separate occassions over the past 3 years. It is an extraordinary residence overlooking the Caribbean sea. The home is spacious but allows for ample privacy when your party is large. The kitchen is modern and up to date with all of the amenities needed. On site washer and dryer in addition to maid service is also an added bonus. The home is well furnished with a separate fully furnished apartment suite below for larger groups. The newly added fitness center is perfect for a work-out in an air conditioned space. There are 2 beaches nearby, both under a 2 minute walk. The views from the home, patio and pool are exceptional. The owners have spared no expense to make this home truly a paradise. There are plenty of activities on the island to keep you busy and the owners have also prepared an extensive guide for activities (boat rentals, sailing, snorkeling) and dining ideas (check out Patty's Deli for gourmet goodies!). The property is true to its description, the photos are spot on and it is well maintained. We would and have recommended this property to family and friends. You absolutely can not go wrong with this rental!
