3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms

Welcome to Sweet Corn House, a new and elegant three-bedroom, four-bath Colonial home on the hill above Governors Harbour. Sweet Corn is graced by shady, wrap-around verandas overlooking landscaped tropical gardens and a private swimming pool.

The first floor of Sweet Corn features a large and sunny open-plan living area ideal for entertaining. The great room has lounge seating for five+ and dining room seating for six. The island kitchen, with stainless steel appliances, is open to the great room and features additional bar-chair seating. There is an adjacent powder room and laundry room.

The first floor of Sweet Corn has two separate bedroom suites with full baths, one with a queen bed and one with a king bed. The king bedroom suite has a kitchenette and can be accessed from the great room or directly from the garden via a separate keyed entrance.

The second floor of Sweet Corn is devoted entirely to the master bedroom suite. This spacious suite features a luxurious modern bathroom, two private balconies, and a private sun deck with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Sweet Corn has air conditioning throughout the house, cable TV, DVD player, wifi internet, land line telephone, travel crib, and an outdoor gas grill.

Sweet Corn is one of five homes on the estate formerly owned by Sir Harold Christie, and on which his gracious Bahamian Colonial mansion still stands. Sweet Corn can be rented along with other homes on the estate to accommodate larger groups. Daily housekeeping, private chef, and other services are always available on the estate for an additional charge.

The town of Governors Harbour, a three-minute walk down the hill, has a charming collection of 19th century homes and churches overlooking its historic harbor. Buy fresh fish and lobster every afternoon from fisherman at the town dock, or visit the recently restored Haynes Library, which dates from 1897, for the weekly coffee hour for foreign residents and tourists. Governors Harbour has grocery stores, restaurants, liquor stores, two banks with ATMs, a bakery, gift shops, a dive shop, and a medical clinic. Friday Night Fish Fry in Governors Harbour, a street/beach party that brings together all the tourists and locals with food, drink, and dancing in the street, is not to be missed.

Walking down the hill in the other direction takes you to French Leave Beach, the finest beach on the island and one of the great beaches of the Caribbean. By foot, it’s about 8 minutes to French Leave, a mile-long crescent of pink sand which is literally deserted most of the time. Most visitors to Eleuthera rent a car, because the island is rural and spread out, and a car is the only practical way to get around. By car, Sweet Corn House is just a minute from French Leave Beach.

Fantastic property and location - highly recommend

We stayed here for just over a week, and the property exceeded our expectations. The home was spacious enough for our party of four adults and two small children but could also easily accommodate three couples. The master suite is all that is on the second floor so was perfect for my husband and I and our 19 month old who still naps at least once a day. The home was beautiful and very well built and cared for. When we were downstairs with the tv on or talking you could not hear this upstairs. My four year old and 19 month old loved the pool, as one end is very shallow and she could stand in it and the water came to her waist. The home was very well equipped, and had a stocked pantry, extra things left behind from previous guests such as extra bug spray, sunscreen/ sun tan lotion, and Kathy provided a cell phone for us to use on the island for emergencies which made us feel more secure about exploring the island. There is also a land line which was helpful to make dinner reservations at the local restaurants or to comfirm the grocery store hours. Kathy was a fabulous host and was so helpful before and during our stay, and even followed up after our trip was over. Bob and Kathy live next door and were both so friendly, as was everyone we encountered on this wonderful island. We were able to explore the ocean hole, the glass window bridge, made our way as far north as the harbour where the ferry goes to Spanish wells and as far south as the road to lighthouse beach. However you need a four by four to get to lighthouse beach. The beach that is walking distance from the house is the best beach in our opinion, we explored the old club med property that was destroyed in the 1999 hurricane, so I guess the beach is the old club med beach or is now called french leave. The sand was indescribable, as it was so soft and smooth and had pink strands running through it, the water was clear to the bottom and was shallow for quite a ways out so our kids loved it. We usually drove as the is a bit of parking at the end of the road and the most people we saw on this beach was about 6 other people. We took beach chairs from the house however discovered that there were six white plastic lounge chairs at this beach, which at least four were available each time we went. Not sure who put them there but we enjoyed them! We ate at Tippy's, purple orchid, 1968, Friday night fish fry and Pascals at sky beach club which all had nice views of the water.

Best place to stay in Eleuthera!

  • 5 of 5
My husband, two young children (9 months old and 2 year old) and I stayed at Sweet Corn House for one week. We feel that we are lucky to have picked this house. The island doesn't have much going on (which we like), but this house is within walking distance of the things you would want to be close to: coffee shop, restaurant (Buccaneer Club), grocery store (next to the Shell gas station), bank. Also wonderful was the fact that we could walk to French Leave beach from the house- one of the nicest beaches on the island!

Beyond location, this house is fully equipped with anything you could possibly need during your vacation and more. The bedrooms and bathrooms are very well designed.

Kathy is a great host. She lent us a baby cot and high chair for the baby. We felt right at home.

We would certainly come back to stay at Sweet Corn House again. Thank you!

Perfect Vacation at Sweet Corn

  • 5 of 5
Eleuthera is beautiful and Sweet Corn is the perfect base from which to explore this great island and its fabulous beaches. Placed at the center of the island, in Governour's Harbour, Sweet Corn is minutes away from 4 of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas. The listing is very accurate and the photos give a perfect idea of the place. But in reality, Sweet Corn IS EVEN BETTER!
Sweet Corn is absolutely charming, with a beautiful, comfortable and "family friendly" layout. It is beautifully furnished and very tastefully decorated. The pool is terrific and we all enjoyed it early in the morning or in the evenings after a long day at the beach! The property is exquisitely maintained by the super efficient and charming owner. Kathy was very helpful and answered all our questions. She introduced us to all the best places where to shop for fruit and spices, fresh fish, and to the fabulous bakery.
Among the great thing I could enumerate about Sweet Corn, I would like to share that my 2 teenage daughters were particularly happy with the strong wifi which in these island could be of concern!
Our two weeks vacation was perfect, and we are looking forward to return to this paradise next year!

Beautiful home, perfect location, wonderful owner

  • 5 of 5
Sweet Corn is a beautifully decorated home, in a perfect location with a wonderful owner who goes out of her way to make your stay enjoyable..

Kathy, the owner, greeted us with a tray of lasagna when we arrived. She told us about the house and the island. She made us feel like old friends who were truly welcome. She recommended wonderful restaurants such as Tippy's and the Beach House (our favorite). She suggested places to shop such as Island Farms for fresh produce and Bristol Liquors for the best wine selection..She went out of her way several times to help us. On Sunday she ordered the World Cup game on pay-per-view when the free broadcast went off five minutes into the game and my nephew almost had a meltdown. Unfortunately my husband got strep throat during the trip and she recommended a doctor right down the street who was able to prescribe medicine that helped him recover very quickly.

We love to cook and the kitchen was fully equipped. I hate to arrive in a rental where the cupbaoards are completely bare and there are only two pans. Every type of pot and pan was provided. Everything we looked for was there, from a salad spinner to a pineapple corer. I could have baked a cake! There were basic spice and condiments that we used to prepare a fish dinner on the grill 5 of the 10 nights of our stay. It was simple to buy fresh fish, just walk down the hill to Govenor's Harbour and buy it from the fisherman who come in with their catch every afternoon.

We enjoyed being able to walk to French Leave (Club Med) beach when the men were out fishing with the car. There were backpack chairs in the pool house that made it easy to carry our "supplies" to the beach. The pool was perfect, a ledge you could sit on to read or you could get one of the toys from the pool house and have a floating happy hour after a long day at the beach.

The location is ideal. We were able to walk to Govenor's Harbor to enjoy the pastries from the bakery and breakfast from Da Perk several mornings. We walked to the fish fry twice and were lucky enough to be there on Wednesday for their Junkanoo festival. We enjoyed mingling with the local people and eating the delicious local food. The Buccaneer was a short walk from the house if you wanted a snack and they serve a good breakfast too.many times.

My husband said that he never needs to visit another island villa (we've been to 26), it would be ok with him if we returned to Sweet Corn every year.

Sweet Corn was amazing and beautiful!!!

  • 5 of 5
The Sweet Corn house was beautiful. From its design, layout, quality construction and furnishings, it was all perfect. The location was also very nice up on the hill with the breezes off the Atlantic and made us not even need the air conditioning. The pool was very nice as well, it got used a lot and the kids loved it! not to mention the adults. We would definitely consider staying here again in the future. Thanks you.

Sweet time at Sweet Corn.

  • 5 of 5
Our family of 4 spent 10 days at Sweet Corn House. We have been to Eleuthera many times but this was the first time we have stayed in town. The house was great and everything was exactly as advertised on the website. The house sits on top of the hill and there is a great view of the Atlantic as well as a great breeze on the upstairs deck. The kids loved having a pool and we enjoyed the convenient location – close to town, restaurants and beaches. We could walk home from the fish fry. Because we were so centrally located, we found time to accomplish a few new things this trip. We spent a fabulous day down south at Whiteland Beach, we taught the kids how to snorkel at Ten Bay and we finally got around to visiting the Leon Levy Preserve. Bob and Kathy were great hosts. Kathy checked in every now and then to make sure we were doing well, and Bob really bailed us out on Sunday morning when our rental car decided not to start just when we needed to head to the airport. We also got to pick fresh lettuce, tomatoes, basil and other goodies from Kathy’s vegetable garden. Julianna and Tara were helpful in making reservations and also checked in during our stay to see how we were doing. I would not hesitate to recommend this property.

Eleuthera is famous for its 100 miles of spectacular, deserted beaches. The island, home to just 8000 residents, is completely safe any time of the day or night. Enjoy the rare experience of picking up hitch-hikers and leaving your keys in the car wherever you go. The snorkeling, diving, and fishing on the island are world class. Boating, surfing, and other water sports are also popular. You can rent power boats, sailboats, sea kayaks, bikes. You can have a charter captain take you out for excursions of various types. There is excellent sightseeing as well. Eleuthera has vast caves, cliffs, a bottomless ocean hole, many unique beaches, historic churches and 19th century homes, and small villages to explore. We hope you will enjoy Sweet Corn House, and experience all our island has to offer.
