The Birdhouse at Willard Beach ~ a Maine cottage at the beach

Property Details

Updated: Apr 23, 2015
3 bedrooms, 1 full bath, sleeps 5

Located 60 steps from Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine, the Birdhouse at Willard Beach is the perfect place to kick back and relax. A comfortable seashore cottage, the Birdhouse has three bedrooms (a queen and a single downstairs and two twins upstairs) and one bath. Furnished in eclectic and informal cottage style, you will find all of the comforts of home.

Willard Beach is a little known gem – a mile long sandy beach just minutes from downtown Portland. With a seasonal beach house with restrooms, snack bar, showers and a playground it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day. From the house as well as the beach you can enjoy a great view of the islands, Casco Bay and the ship channel. The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a short walk not only to the beach, but also Willard Square – home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops, a homemade ice cream shop. Also within walking distance are several restaurants, lighthouses, parks and a live theater, and it’s no more than a 10-minute drive across the bridge to downtown Portland.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a fun and informal house with three bedrooms, one bath, and all the amenities you could wish for: Flat screen TV, DVD, Wireless Internet, W&D, gas grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog (with deposit), but must regretfully ask that you leave your cats at home.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is available by the week during the summer, and during other times of year with a 3-night minimum. Longer term rentals during the off-season considered by special arrangement.

About the Owner

While we live most of the year in Washington state, we love to spend as much time as we can in Maine, where our sons both live. We frequently drive from coast to coast so our basset hound, Nika, can come with us. Since we cannot be in Maine all the time, we really enjoy sharing our cottage with others when we cannot be there~ and love hearing about what they enjoyed while at the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a most memorable Thanksgiving week at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us. Empty nester Mom, Dad and a 20 lb. cockapoo needed a place to stay to meet and spend Thanksgiving with our daughter's fiancé’s family. The fenced back yard provided secure outdoor space for the pooch for short trips out to relieve himself. This was especially appreciated for the last trip before bed. (no leash, no walk after dark required). The beach provided all the entertainment and exercise all three of us needed. What a place for dogs and what a dog show! (If you are a dog lover who enjoys watching well behaved dogs play, the show we saw should not be missed) Even for non-dog lovers the beach provides plenty for the eye to feast on. Freighters, tugs, ferries etc. headed into/out of Portland pass right in front of the beach a mile or so out. We were able to watch lobsterman haul pots just off the beach. (take binoculars for that). The seascape panorama is magnificent. The house is all that is represented in the publicity and more. We were charmed and looking forward to our next visit. The Birdhouse provided us with a most memorable week in Maine. Susan and Tony run a classy operation! Sign us up again please!

Great location, Cute Cottage

  • 5 of 5
The property was just as expected. It was very homey, with plenty of amenities. It has everything you need to spend your vacation comfortably. I love how dog friendly the house is. They even have dog bowls in case you forgot yours.
The cottage is a two minute walk to the beach entrance and a ten minute drive to downtown Portland. South Portland is a super cute town and everyone we met were so friendly.
The only downside was that you have to clean before you leave. I rather pay a cleaning fee than have to do it myself (I'm on vacation), but it is still more than worth the hassle.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that you enjoyed the cottage. We are sorry if you found the cleaning to be a downside... As there is limited time between guests departing and new guests arriving, we do ask that our guests leave the house in broom clean condition, so our cleaners can do the hard core cleaning in the short turn around time. (Charging cleaning fees vs. not charging them seems to be a difference in philosophy. It seems to us that charging a cleaning fee is really just a disingenuous way to charge more rent, and honestly, we are doing our best to keep the costs as reasonable as possible. In the many years that we have been renting out our home, our policy seems to have worked quite well for most of our guests.)
We hope that you and your pups will return to the Birdhouse again.

Excellent stay. Clean/cozy/warm. Well stocked.

  • 5 of 5
Kitchen very well stocked with all tools and spices needed for excellent meal preparation. As the outside temperature was betweent +6 and +35F during our stay, heat was necessary. The house Heat was perfect. Always warm and comfortable. This was very nice especially after taking the dog for a walk on the beach! Super clean. Washer and dryer are new and worked great. The vacuum worked well and had new bags and filter in the vacuum closet. Very impressed. Next time we are in the Portland Maine area, we will stay at the Bird House again. Thanks very much, Russ, Julie and Molly.

Cozy and comfortable cottage by the beach

  • 5 of 5
The cottage is very cute and cozy. We had a comfortable stay and the location in South Portland can't be beat - you are one block from the beach! Susan and Tony were very responsive and helpful, especially since we arrived during a blizzard! There are games to play and tons of books to read, and pretty much any cooking utensil you could ever need. I would highly recommend this rental.

Absolutely Amazing and So Relaxing

  • 5 of 5
Where do we begin? Bruce and I ( and our two Old English Sheepdogs) found a little piece of heaven on Willard Beach. We absolutely LOVED The Birdhouse and felt at home and totally relaxed the moment we walked through the door. We are originally from Maine and this was the first time we opted to rent a place of our own for the Holidays instead of staying with family. Our family enjoyed it as much as we did. Susan and Tony have made their beach cottage very comfortable and we found everything we needed, especially when it came to my making my traditional Christmas Pork Pies and all my Christmas Cookies. When they say well equipped kitchen, they mean well equipped kitchen, right down to pie plates, rolling pin and pastry blender! Oh - and sharp knives :) ( I am a fanatic over having sharp knives in a kitchen)

Our pups thoroughly enjoyed the fenced in yard and the back deck as well as walks on the beach. I enjoyed getting up every morning and heading out to the point to experience some of the most spectacular sunrises. We made several trips to the Old Port in Portland, but also stayed close by to enjoy some of the local food. We ate at Ottos and had some crazy combination pizzas with friends. We also had a fabulous dinner and David's 388. Of course a visit to the area isn't complete unless you visit Scratch Bakery ( bagels and english muffins) and the Cookie Jar for chocolate coconut donuts! We also had a great lunch at Joe's Boathouse. Oh ya and the pups got to visit The Whole Dog Market.

The Cottage was clean when we arrived and is well maintained. We enjoyed the gas "fireplace" on some very chilly nights.

I will definitely rent The Birdhouse again and would highly recommend it to friends and family.

Great job Susan and Tony along with Nancy ( caretaker) for making our Christmas and New Years a very memorable one and one that I am sure we will talk about for years to come!

Our Vacation at The Birdhouse at Willard Beach

  • 5 of 5
Our family of four stayed at the Birdhouse during the week of Thanksgiving. The house was everything you would want during a vacation. The house was immaculate and the kitchen was fully equiped with everything you would need to cook a Thanksgiving Dinner. You can see the ocean from the house and the path to the ocean is out the front door. The owners were absolutely wonderful from the initial booking through our departure. I would highly recommend the Birdhouse for a wonderful stay in South Portland, Maine.

Ideal Maine Beach Location & Amenities

Ideal Maine Beach Location & Amenities
  • 5 of 5
We booked the Birdhouse based on location - close proximity to our daughter's family in South Portland and the Willard Beach neighborhood which we know to be ideal. The Birdhouse is everything a cozy beach cottage should be; easy access to activities during the day, and warm comfort at night. The home was furnished with very satisfactory amenities. Since we like to cook ourselves we were delighted with a very well appointed kitchen, from the large modern range to the top-quality knives & cookware. We did take advantage of local dining more than once; at the not-to-be-missed and walking distance Scratch Bakery, at Otto Pizza nearby. Also we dined at Boone's in Portland on the pier next to the excellent purveyor at HarborFish, where we purchased seafood to prepare at the Birdhouse. Our daughter, son-in-law & grandchildren enjoyed meeting up with us at "the Beach house" to take walks on Willard Beach, and go on excursions to Ft. Williams & the Portland Headlight, a trip to Randall's Apple Farm, as well as a hike around Mackworth Island, a short 20 minute drive near Yarmouth. We had a week full of memories with family yet appreciated having our own comfortable abode at the Birdhouse to getaway and relax as a couple. We definitely recommend this property and hope to return ourselves.

From the Owner

We used to own a house on Peaks Island, and while it was great, we find that we love being on the mainland and watching the ferry go by without having to try to catch it in order to get home! The Willard Beach neighborhood has always been special. We used to bring the boys to the beach when they were small and we lived in Portland (many years ago) - and now they get to come visit it as adults ~ and Nika gets to walk on the best dog beach in southern Maine!

From the Owner

How can you not love a house that is steps away from the beach, one of the best bakeries in New England AND a homemade ice cream shop? Previously owned by a lobsterman whose hobby was making unique birdhouses, we fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it.
