The Birdhouse at Willard Beach ~ a Maine cottage at the beach

Overview

Property Details

Updated: Nov 16, 2014
3 bedrooms, 1 full bath, sleeps 5

Located 60 steps from Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine, the Birdhouse at Willard Beach is the perfect place to kick back and relax. A comfortable seashore cottage, the Birdhouse has three bedrooms (a queen and a single downstairs and two twins upstairs) and one bath. Furnished in eclectic and informal cottage style, you will find all of the comforts of home.

Willard Beach is a little known gem – a mile long sandy beach just minutes from downtown Portland. With a seasonal beach house with restrooms, snack bar, showers and a playground it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day. From the house as well as the beach you can enjoy a great view of the islands, Casco Bay and the ship channel. The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a short walk not only to the beach, but also Willard Square – home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops, a homemade ice cream shop. Also within walking distance are several restaurants, lighthouses, parks and a live theater, and it’s no more than a 10-minute drive across the bridge to downtown Portland.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a fun and informal house with three bedrooms, one bath, and all the amenities you could wish for: Flat screen TV, DVD, Wireless Internet, W&D, gas grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog (with deposit), but must regretfully ask that you leave your cats at home.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is available by the week during the summer, and during other times of year with a 3-night minimum. Longer term rentals during the off-season considered by special arrangement.

About the Owner

While we live most of the year in Washington state, we love to spend as much time as we can in Maine, where our sons both live. We frequently drive from coast to coast so our basset hound, Nika, can come with us. Since we cannot be in Maine all the time, we really enjoy sharing our cottage with others when we cannot be there~ and love hearing about what they enjoyed while at the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a most memorable Thanksgiving week at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us. Empty nester Mom, Dad and a 20 lb. cockapoo needed a place to stay to meet and spend Thanksgiving with our daughter's fiancé’s family. The fenced back yard provided secure outdoor space for the pooch for short trips out to relieve himself. This was especially appreciated for the last trip before bed. (no leash, no walk after dark required). The beach provided all the entertainment and exercise all three of us needed. What a place for dogs and what a dog show! (If you are a dog lover who enjoys watching well behaved dogs play, the show we saw should not be missed) Even for non-dog lovers the beach provides plenty for the eye to feast on. Freighters, tugs, ferries etc. headed into/out of Portland pass right in front of the beach a mile or so out. We were able to watch lobsterman haul pots just off the beach. (take binoculars for that). The seascape panorama is magnificent. The house is all that is represented in the publicity and more. We were charmed and looking forward to our next visit. The Birdhouse provided us with a most memorable week in Maine. Susan and Tony run a classy operation! Sign us up again please!

Ideal Maine Beach Location & Amenities

Ideal Maine Beach Location & Amenities

We booked the Birdhouse based on location - close proximity to our daughter's family in South Portland and the Willard Beach neighborhood which we know to be ideal. The Birdhouse is everything a cozy beach cottage should be; easy access to activities during the day, and warm comfort at night. The home was furnished with very satisfactory amenities. Since we like to cook ourselves we were delighted with a very well appointed kitchen, from the large modern range to the top-quality knives & cookware. We did take advantage of local dining more than once; at the not-to-be-missed and walking distance Scratch Bakery, at Otto Pizza nearby. Also we dined at Boone's in Portland on the pier next to the excellent purveyor at HarborFish, where we purchased seafood to prepare at the Birdhouse. Our daughter, son-in-law & grandchildren enjoyed meeting up with us at "the Beach house" to take walks on Willard Beach, and go on excursions to Ft. Williams & the Portland Headlight, a trip to Randall's Apple Farm, as well as a hike around Mackworth Island, a short 20 minute drive near Yarmouth. We had a week full of memories with family yet appreciated having our own comfortable abode at the Birdhouse to getaway and relax as a couple. We definitely recommend this property and hope to return ourselves.

The Birdhouse

Lovely place that was well supplied with essentials. Its very near the beach and our dog loved to romp and run there. Our grand kids came over to visit and stayed overnight (they live in SoPo) and had a great time too. Walked to Scratch Bakery for morning treats! We would recommend it highly.

Quiet Neighborhood and Great Accomodations

  • 5 of 5
We had a great stay at The Birdhouse. The location is terrific, it is quiet, peaceful, close to many amenities and the beach is just steps away. Tony and Susan provided all the information we needed to make the most of our stay. The rental process was simple and completed quickly. They were also very welcoming to our four legged family member, our Golden Retriever Agent Scully, who enjoyed the beach to the max! The house has all the necessary features, including solid wi-fi, that made us feel right at home and we enjoyed a very comfortable stay. We enjoyed it so much, even though the fall weather didn't always cooperate, that we've booked it again for next summer. And the people in the Portland-South Portland area are incredibly friendly!!

Perfectly located at a reasonable price

Tony and Susan are the nicest people you can possibly rent from and their property manager, Nancy, made our second visit so enjoyable we are already planning out third trip for next year. We made day trips to Bethel and Grafton Notch to check out the foliage and then one day to Richmond, Winslow, Augusta and Hallowell on a preliminary exploration of the Benedict Arnold route to Quebec in 1775. Would love to buy in that neighborhood but am content to stay in the Birdhouse. Excellent visit!!

Comfortable cottage in nice, quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5
As three brothers who are prone to taking "BRO-cations", the birdhouse was more than adequate. The well appointed neighborhood nearly betrays the fact that you're on vacation and just steps away from beautiful willard beach, and really steps away from anywhere.
While the only thing we generally make on vacation are reservations, those with a knack for cooking and serving up the local seafood will not be disappointed with all the tools of the trade.
For us its all about location. Whenever we choose a destination, it must have good hiking, ok at our age, a good level walk, which abounds, but much more interesting if you take a short ferry ride to Peaks Island and take a stroll there; a brewery or winery, the Allagash brewery's tour and tasting, check; an ode to American literature, in this case the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow home in Portland, and a racetrack, Scarborough Downs, the only gamble we took in staying at the Birdhouse. I have to say, at the end our stay. it was very hard to fly the coop.

Our third wonderful year at The Birdhouse

....and the home and the area never disappoint. If you ever have the chance to rent this home, you should do it. Quiet neighborhood, dogs allowed in this cottage, steps from the beach, and near so many wonderful things in Maine. We hope to be back again. Owners are wonderful, not just landlords but nice, kind, caring, friendly people. Enjoy!

Location

From the Owner

We used to own a house on Peaks Island, and while it was great, we find that we love being on the mainland and watching the ferry go by without having to try to catch it in order to get home! The Willard Beach neighborhood has always been special. We used to bring the boys to the beach when they were small and we lived in Portland (many years ago) - and now they get to come visit it as adults ~ and Nika gets to walk on the best dog beach in southern Maine!

Amenities

From the Owner

How can you not love a house that is steps away from the beach, one of the best bakeries in New England AND a homemade ice cream shop? Previously owned by a lobsterman whose hobby was making unique birdhouses, we fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it.
