Burgundy House is New Orleans at its Best!
Lower Ninth Ward Downtown
Denver, CO

Lush plants surrounding this hidden gem!

  • 4 of 5
This place was amazing! First, we had a slight miscommunication with the number of people. We had 8 in our party, which the description states it sleeps 8. There was certainly enough "room", but if you are planning on 8 beds, plan on bringing an air mattress. There was a roll away cot, which sleeps one, and the king is expected to sleep 3. However, the couch is so comfortable, the two in our party actually chose to sleep on the couch as opposed to air mattress/cot that was provided to us. The pictures of the interior are spot on, but the outside pictures of the pool/patio do not do justice. It was 100 times better!!! It was so relaxing to swim in the evening while listening to the sounds of nature, and Caption John, who is one of the best guys you could meet, shared his home and stories with us, and taught us about his birds. It's certainly not minutes from the French Quarter and we did not have a car, but we took the bus, which is just down the street and very easy and cabs home. Though it may seem like the area is "sketchy" or "ghetto", it's how all of New Orleans looks, not just this area. After all, they did survive probably the most horrific hurricane and have had to rebuild. We never felt unsafe or uncomfortable during our stay. This was such a great place and we look forward to our return!

So bad we chose not to stay here

  • 1 of 5
We paid for a night but chose not to stay. This house has glowing reviews on this site and that influenced our decision, despite realising it was going to be quite a hike from the French Quarter. But for our 3 generation family reunion, we thought it would be ideal. Sadly it proved to be far from the case and we left, deciding to forfeit our deposit of one night's accommodation.

We took photos before the owner arrived "to collect the balance" which show a hole in the door, wires hanging out of the wall, the pool was not private but shared by 3 properties. There was no gas bottle that we could see with the bbq. Bugs were biting our legs and the house smelt musty - due to the mould on the windows.

Red flags that we should have paid attention to include the street address for this property being hidden on this website. Why? Because it's in a dodgy part of town. It's next to the Lower Ninth Ward which still has ruined Katrina houses that you will pass.

We now realise that the reason the only correspondence and phone call upon our arrival we had with Nick was about how quickly he could come over and collect the balance (in cash) as soon as we arrived is that people must have done a runner before. I would have expected his emails to talk of welcoming us and letting us know about his city.

We've written off the lost deposit as a lesson learned and I post this review because while you might like to stay here with a bunch of college friends, if we'd read a review that was as shocked as we were, we would not have booked in.

Owner's Response: What an unfortunate review. It's hard to take someone seriously who blames mosquito bites on a home owner. After understanding that, I'm not surprised they smelled things or had numerous other complaints (complaints of wires coming out of the TV?, of our location (see all other reviews), complaints of us attempting to collect their balance outstanding (yes, they still have an unpaid balance), etc, etc..some people just can't be pleased and live life in a haze of negativity.

Please disregard this review. We have 14 5-star reviews, two 4-star reviews and now this one 1-star review. It is inaccurate and untrue. This is a family run business and we work really hard at making each guests trip as good and memorable as possible. Many guests return year after year. We've literally had guests offer to buy the home from us on the spot. Again, disregard the above won't regret staying with us year after year.

Great Place, Fantastic People

This place was perfect for us. Far enough from the French Quarter to relax poolside after our days out and about exploring this great city without the noise but close enough to not have to drive far to anything we wanted to do. Nick and Harold are awesome to deal with and are more than helpful with anything we needed. The neighbors we met, Captain John and Deidre made us feel right at home and helped us find our way around to places to shop, eat and they had many suggestions of things to see or do on our trip.

We had a great time here and recommend it to anyone looking for a nice place to stay that makes you feel right at home.

Girls Trip

I stayed here with fiver other women in lat June. I agree with the other reviews, diving through the neighborhood I was bit nervous about what I would find, but I discovered that most of NOLA is that way. The house was wonderful, better than the photos. We felt 100% safe all the time. The pool was a perfect. We were even able to meet a few gentlemen that live next door, sweet, sweet men! The water pressure in the showers was wonder. we drove all over NOLA and could get anywhere we wanted with 15 min. Dealing with Nick was super easy and low stress. You will not regret staying here.

I want to BUY this hidden gem!!

  • 5 of 5
I am a frequent traveler to Nola and this was the first time I ventured out of the French Quarter b/c we had a large party and it was Halloween season. Words could not describe how impressive all of our interactions with this owner were from start to finish. He stayed in constant communication, answered all our questions courteously and efficiently and delivered exactly what was promised- an amazing hidden gem. The house was equipped with all the amenities my party of 6 needed: 3 bedrooms (a spacious Master Bedroom and full Master Bathroom with a double mirrored sink and primping nook; 2 other large bedrooms- one w/a Queen and one with double beds), full bathroom in the hall, full functioning kitchen w/dishwasher, gas stove, microwave, refrigerator, double kitchen sink vanity island, charming breakfast bar, gorgeous dining room table and chairs, large comfortable sectional couch, large tv stand, leather sofas in reading nook, laundry room w/washer and dryer, stereo, iron, hairdryer, closet space in every room, etc. I really can't sing it's praises enough. The high ceilings, open spaced layout and decor made it hard to leave and easier to come home to. Once we got over the thrill of the house, we stepped outside to the immediate deck to survey the rest of the property and nirvana quickly ensued when we discovered the immense beautiful grounds held surprises at every twist and turn! There are so many areas on this property to 'lose yourself' to whatever mood you fancy! The immediate deck, table, umbrella and chairs served as our wake-up area, with coffee in hand where'd we'd assess the weather of the day; before getting ready to hit the town, we'd walk our glasses of wine to the second outdoor area we coined the 'casablanca terrace' for it's intimate covered patio w/ a wicker couch, sofas, coffee table, ceiling fan and petrified wood fountain. The next area was the largest- a large pool, diving board, more patio chairs and table surrounded by lush NOLA plants and greenery- perfect for summer barbecues. The gazebo had a chandelier and seating for two and faced a koi pond, greenhouse and the pool. UNBELIEVABLE!! In my party we had writers and a yoga instructor that were constantly inspired merely walking the grounds! Trips to the Quarter consisted of a 15 min. cabride and the owner provided us with the local cab company which was very punctual and reliable. Needless to say, I am dying to revisit this and any other properties this man's name is attached to!

Would stay here again

  • 4 of 5
We recently spent a week at the Burgundy House with my family which included 4 teenagers. The pictures listed are quite accurate. The pool is not private per se, rather shared by three other houses. The pool area was immaculate and a lush tropical garden even in the middle of February. It was private for us due to the time of the year we were here, and might be private all the time based on the time the time of the rental and agreements with the other homes. None the less, it is a very nice pool area with tons of seating to relax and kick back after a long day walking the French Qtr.. The home itself it quite large and very spacious inside. I did see a roll away and a play pen for a baby kept in the closet. Kitchen is fully equipped with just about everything you might need to cook with. We did buy a large pitcher to make kool-aid for the kiddos(donated to the house). There is a TV in the living area and the master bedroom. Ample closet space is available in each room. The drive way has a carport to park under. Full size washer and dryer is a huge plus. The neighborhood immediately surrounding the house seems to be well kept by the other owners. Unfortunately, a few streets sometime in either direction does not lead to the same upkeep. Wal-mart is about 5 miles away for grocery needs. The house is about 7-10 minutes from the french quarter so it was an easy drive each day into town. The house is located in a very quiet neighborhood, not filled with heavy traffic or sirens all night. As mentioned in a previous post, driving to the house seemed sketchy, but once we arrived we felt good about the location and did not encounter any security problems the entire week. We would rent this property again if ever back in NOLA especially in the summer when we could enjoy the pool and deck area. We had an easy transaction with the owner and he was easy to reach via email or phone whenever we needed to speak. NOLA is a great town, just expect to want to eat out more than eat in since the food is so awesome. Driving to the airport was about 30 minutes +/- depending on traffic and time of day. We went to every area of the city while in NOLA, magazine street, hornets game at the convention center, French QTR, downtown, Metarie, City park, Airport, Chalmette ferry. You name it and we probably did it. All from this location away from the hustle and bustle. It was good to get a restful nights rest each and every night. Can't wait to go back.
