Gorgeous 5 Bedroom, 2 Bath Home, Sleeps up to 12, Close To Campus

Rent this tastefully furnished and beautifully appointed, large 2-story 1908 Craftsman vacation home by the night or by the week. Recently restored and upgraded, decorated with a mix of antiques and artisan furnishings, and outfitted with high quality bedding, this home feels more like an upscale historic inn than a typical vacation rental.

This vacation rental includes the 5-1/2 bedrooms, 2 bath main house, one parking space, and the front porch and front yard.

Also on the property are two studio apartments, each with its own separate entrance, kitchen and bath. The apartments do not have access to the main house, so your rental is private. The owner lives in one of the two studio apartments and the other is offered as a vacation rental. When the rental studio apartment is available (just ask), you can add it to your vacation rental for an additional fee.

The house has a highly coveted location, located approximately 1/2 mile south of University of California, Berkeley; just a few blocks from the popular Telegraph Ave, College Ave, Claremont Ave shops and restaurants; and 10 miles from downtown San Francisco. Public transportation, walkable shops and restaurants, and Zipcars are abundant nearby. Literally right around the corner you'll find delightful shops, restaurants, and grassy parks. This is a perfect place for families visiting their Cal students, professional staff attending conferences, and families on vacation.

We provide everything you need: clean, newish towels, luxury linens, first aid kit, soaps/shampoo, fully equipped kitchen with cooking supplies, free wi-fi, free worldwide phone calling, and a full lineup of cable TV channels, including HBO, sports, and movie channels.

A small, quiet family dinner, brunch, or outdoor BBQ is a great use of this home. But if your group is looking for an event hall or a place to get loud and party, please use a local event venue for those activities or choose another vacation rental. This home is located in a quiet, family neighborhood with school-aged children living next door and limited parking, and we're conscientious about being good neighbors. The two bathrooms cannot accommodate large gatherings. Therefore, we have an upper limit of 20 people on the property at one time (including residents).

We supply families with a basket of toys, children's books, board games, cards, outlet covers, table corner bumpers, and bed-wetting pads. Other baby gear is available for rent, affordably, to help us cover the cost of purchasing and maintaining it. We also have picnic blankets and beach towels you may use for your outings, perhaps to the large, grassy park just 2 blocks away. The spacious front yard is surrounded by a high privacy fence with gate latches, providing plenty of space for kids to run off their excess energy. We're family-friendly but we expect families to keep the running, wrestling, and play-fighting outdoors, to remove shoes indoors, and to take reasonable steps to protect our property.

All of the rooms are super clean and absolutely gorgeous, with comfortable and interesting high quality furnishings in matching color schemes, and completely uncluttered. All bedding is new, with goose down and feather pillows and comforters (and alternatives if you're allergic), pretty duvet covers and bedspreads, and high quality cotton sheets. Each room has its own iron and ironing board, hair dryer, mirrors, hamper or laundry basket, and extra blankets and throws. Several rooms can accommodate more than two (with our futons and cot) and one of our rooms accommodates up to 6 guests.

(Actually a room and a half)

17 ft x15 1/2 ft (263 square feet)

(Sleeps 6 in 4 beds)

This is the largest room, with a king sized bed (sleeps 2), a futon sofa (sleeps 2), a twin futon (sleeps 1), a chair futon (sleeps 1 child, narrower than a twin), a sitting/social area, and a large, walk-in closet converted to a small bedroom. Large windows on two walls flood this room in natural light, which you can block with the curtains. If you're traveling with children, the half room, which we call 'The Little Farm,' is equipped with two small futons (a twin futon and a chair futon) which can sleep two children. The room's namesake, Wildcat Canyon, is a valley just east of the Berkeley Hills where visitors love to go hike and picnic along Jewel Lake and Lake Anza. Wildcat Canyon was named for the mountain lions which used to be fairly common in the area.

14 1/2 ft x 12 1/2 ft (181 square feet)

(Sleeps 3 in 2 beds)

This is a large room with a comfortable queen-sized bed (sleeps 2), a chair futon (sleeps 1, twin sized) that can also serve as a sofa (opened and with back pillows against a wall), a desk and chair, a dresser for your clothes, end tables and lamps. The Muir Woods Room pays homage to Muir Woods National Monument, the cathedral of redwoods located 25 miles west of Berkeley, which was established in 1908 when President Roosevelt signed legislation to protect an old-growth coast redwood forest from destruction.

13 ft x 10 ft (130 square feet)

(Sleeps 2)

This pretty room is furnished with a gorgeous and comfortable queen-sized bed (sleeps 2), an antique Victorian armchair, a dresser for clothes, end tables and lamps. Named after the Berkeley Rose Gardens, it features floral rose decor and antique wooden dressers with hand-painted roses.

21 ft x 10 ft (210 square feet)

(Sleeps 3)

This bright, airy room is a sun room with wrap-around windows, a comfortable queen sized bed (sleeps 2), a folding cot (sleeps 1), a teak cabinet with drawers for your things, which opens to become a desk, a teak chair, and end tables and lamps. This room is an homage to the bay area's coastal environments, from the bay shores at the nearby Berkeley Marina to the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean against the rocky shores along Highway 1.

7.5 ft x 10 ft (75 square feet)

(Sleeps 1)

This room is big enough for just one person. It has a twin bed, an antique secretary desk, a chair, and a small teak hutch that can also open out into a desk. The room is named after Angel Island State Park, a 1.2 square mile island that accommodates over a hundred-thousand visitors annually from all over the world.

We provide green living supports (recycling, composting, chemical-free bath products, etc.). Guests clean up after themselves unless you add optional maid service. The house is deep-cleaned and sanitized between groups. Cleaning products are chemical-free and unscented (Seventh Generation and Dr. Bronners), so you'll smell only the fresh air.

With great public transportation, Zip Cars nearby, and easy walks to amenities, you don't need a car. But if you have one, we provide one off-street parking spot with the rental, and we can sell you one additional street parking pass per day. Street parking is plentiful and free overnight and for 2-hour increments between 9 am and 5 pm. Ask me about nearby parking garages and BART parking for additional cars.

Some of my reviews mention breakfast. Breakfast is not automatically included, but can be added for an additional fee. Other optional services and supports (when available/possible and by advance arrangement) include maid/linen/laundry service, camping gear rentals, gift baskets or flowers for special occasions, and airport pickups. We need at least a week's notice to provide these optional services.

Parties, large events (more than 20); Outside caterers in the kitchen; Rough-housing indoors; Removing items from the home; Smoking, illegal drugs, incense; Toxic products (e.g. pesticides, bleach); Pets (including service dogs).

Please be sure to download the rental agreement prior to paying for your booking. Home Away and VRBO have a clearly visible link to the downloadable rental agreement on the booking page and you're asked to check off a box indicating that you have read it and agree to it before they will accept your credit card.

Because I've received numerous requests from budget travelers for discounts, you may have the option to rent some of the rooms, instead of the whole main house, and share the common areas with other travelers.

This is a wonderful vacation home. There were nine of us so we had rented the whole house. There was more than enough room for all of us. There were only two bathrooms which, at times, was challenging, but it all worked out fine. Our host, Amy, was great! She gave us a tour of the house upon arrival, she answered any emails or texts within 30 minutes and overall, made us feel so welcome. The house has everything you could want - fresh linens, towels, an abundance of kitchen appliances, bread, fruit, plates, cups...the list goes on and on. The location of the home worked out well for us. It's about 30-40 mins from SFO airport and downtown San Francisco. You're also about an hour from Napa Valley. On a side note, if you're new to the SF area, traffic is just terrible during rush hour times (7-9am; 3-6pm) so beware. The house was wonderful and Amy has set the bar pretty high. Thank you Amy!

Spacious comfortable house in great location

  • 5 of 5
My daughter and I spent a morning searching for a five bedroom house in Berkeley for 7 family members to stay in during her wedding. This house was perfect! Each bedroom is beautifully done with super comfy beds, so each guest felt special. The rooms are large and so it was easy to prepare meals and socialize and never feel crowded. And it was just a couple of blocks walk to great food and fun shopping, so we got to enjoy the pretty neighborhood as well. The house was really clean and well outfitted for our stay. It was easy to get to the Gourmet Ghetto section of town on Shattuck Ave, the Berkeley Marina, and UC Berkeley. Amy was easy to work with and responsive. If we go to Berkeley again, I will definitely stay here. Highly recommended!

Amy is a very easy-going, friendly, and approachable host. Her home is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful place to stay. She was very accommodating of our group when final membership fluctuated a bit towards the end, making housing the easiest part of the trip. Couldn't recommend more highly.

Great location, great house, great host

  • 5 of 5
We hosted ten undergraduate and graduate student fellows from across the United States at this house for an event at UC Berkeley. This was a perfect location for them to stay, socialize, and organically learn from one another. The rooms are clean and beautiful, and common areas are spacious and comfortable. Our Host, Amy, was invaluable for providing our group with guidance and accommodations during their stay, and even brought snacks and breakfast foods for our students. I would strongly recommend this house for any large group looking for cozy living in a beautiful location, at a reasonable price with a knowledgable host. 5 stars.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Spark Energy! It was a real honor to host a green nonprofit preparing young people for careers in clean energy, and I was happy to offer the extra supports, since my career is also in the sustainability field. For those wondering about privacy, groups that book private rentals won't normally hear from me after check-in unless you reach out with a question or maintenance need.

Beautiful, comfortable, welcoming!

This was a beautiful, clean and well maintained craftsman home. My family was in Berkeley for a wedding and it accommodated us all comfortably. It was within walking distance of restaurants and stores so other than to the wedding, we rarely needed to drive. The owner was very accommodating and helpful. She really helped us feel at home and had all the amenities we needed - from hair dryers and mirrors in our rooms to a fully stocked kitchen. I particularly loved the front porch. It was a great way to be outside and yet very comfortable.

Nice cozy setting, feel like a home.

We came to Berkeley for a family vacation and summer camp at UC Berkeley. Amy's house is nicely set up made our stay felt like home.
The house is only several blocks away from the campus, making it easy for us to contact our kids on campus. It's also so conveniently located off the college drive, where plenty of restaurants and shops to visit.
The house is neat and clean exactly like shown in the pictures. Amy has arranged every detail for our stay. We will definitely come back or recommend to our friends.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay, Jerry. Your family was a pleasure to meet at check-in and delightful to get to know during the Southern breakfast I catered for you. Thank you for leaving the house in perfect condition and being so punctual with check-in and so responsive with communications. You were the perfect guests and I'd gladly rent to you again.

From the Owner

Berkeley offers the quintessential 'good life.' Berkeley is just across the bay from San Francisco, so we have easy access to its cultural opportunities, festivals, and other advantages, while enjoying a break from the noise, traffic, and crowding of the city. With most every kind of natural area (parks, coastlines, redwood forests, mountains, and even high desert) within a short walk, train ride, or drive, there's no place better to experience the great outdoors. Berkeley neighborhoods have the charm, safety, and ease of access of a small town, while also bringing the benefits of a major metropolitan area. This neighborhood (Elmwood) is one of them.

From the Owner

This property fulfilled my quest for the perfect house in which to host travelers seeking a unique, beautiful, and family-friendly stay during their Bay Area visits. This house stood out to me for its gorgeously restored Craftsman architecture and interior design features, its large and beautifully modernized kitchen and bathrooms, its historic significance (built in 1908 in the Julia Morgan style), the opportunities it provided to furnish and decorate for a sense of both home and luxury, and its location close to UC Berkeley and the Elmwood shopping and dining district. I've created here a unique, old-world inn feeling. I fell in love with the: - Huge, plate glass window in the living room which overlooks the garden, letting in lots of natural light and lush, green views. - The lush gardens and sitting areas to enjoy the sun, read alone, or socialize with friends. - Beautiful, hardwood floors and natural wood elements throughout. - Big, bright windows throughout fill the home with natural light. - Modernized kitchen and bathrooms with contemporary lighting, sinks, commodes, and showers, and a deep, resurfaced antique clawfoot tub, is the perfect merging of the modern and the historic. - Inset lighting, most on dimmers, which allows you to create the ambiance you like best: soft and romantic or bright and alive. - Wide hallways which provide a spacious, open, airy feel as you walk through the house.
