Harlem Hideaway Rocks!

  • 5 of 5
Dennis was wonderful, provided us wth great information and local knowledge. After touring around Manhattan and its busyiness it was great to return to Harlem Hideaway each night. The apartment was nice and cosy compared to the Winter outside. Do yourself a favour and have good soul food at Amy Ruth's. Close to the subway and Central Park. The people of Harlem were very friendly and willing to help out lost tourists.Overall a very pleasant stay of two weeks, if I come back to NYC, I would
definitely return to Harlem Hideaway. Home Away provided a great level of service.

A Cozy Bungalow Getaway in NYC

  • 5 of 5
This was the first time I had ever used a site like VRBO. I was very skeptical, you know what they say, what you see isn't always what you get when it comes to the internet...
In this case, what you see is exactly what you get! Our little bungalow was fabulous, exactly as described. Dennis helped to put all my worries to rest. The location of our apartment was perfect. Harlem, contrary to popular opinion, is safe.. at least in this location. We were close to the subway and some great restaurants, including the Red Rooster and Harlem Shakes (which features some great shakes and tasty jerk fries!) . I loved that I got to experience NYC this way, we felt as if we were truly living in the city. I plan to stay here again and would recommend it to all my friends!! I give it 5++ stars!

HidingAway in Harlem

  • 5 of 5
The Harlem Hideaway was the perfect place to stay for our get-away. It was quiet and peaceful, clean and cozy! With just a few blocks from the subway, we were able to get where we needed to go in no time. Dennis was very accomodating ... one of our favorite parts was him taking a few minutes of his time upon check in to share a few Harlem favorites. Our favorites - Harlem Shake for some delicious burgers and shakes and the Apollo for Ameteur Night. The people of Harlem were friendly and we felt safe when were out and about.
We have already recommended the Harlem Hideaway and hope to get back there soon for another visit!

A cozy home away from home in Harlem

  • 5 of 5
As described, the suite is a fully furnished studio apartment in a Brownstone building in Harlem. Dennis, the proprietor, provided excellent customer service such as new towels, new bedding, and more toilet paper quickly upon request, as well as many great recommendations for eating and entertainment nearby (e.g. Harlem Shake, Amateur Night at the Apollo).

- Air conditioning unit was very quiet and didn't disrupt sleep
- No shortage of hot water, near as we could tell
- Fully furnished means fully furnished, as Dennis thought of pretty much everything you could possibly need.
- Wonderful interior decoration, very very tastefully done
- Plenty of reference material for tourism research
- Very responsive customer service from Dennis
- Short walk from multiple subway stations

(minor) Cons:
- Faint vibration from nearby subway line (may bother some, didn't bother us)
- Some plates and bowls were cracked/broken, kitchen knife dull
- Clothing storage cabinets above the bed could use some organizing totes
- Bathroom vanity a bit small and rickety

A very pleasant and relaxing environment, would definitely stay here the next time we're in NYC. Would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the excellent review! I appreciate that you came here for your honeymoon and I'm glad you had a good time and felt at home. You were wonderful guests.

Response to Cons:
- Faint vibration from nearby subway line (may bother some, didn't bother us)
Actually many feel this the charm of New York City. It is something all New Yorkers may feel that are on any of the bottom 3 floors of a building that is very quiet. The subway is about 1/3 block away.

- Some plates and bowls were cracked/broken, kitchen knife dull
Thank you for letting me know about the knife. I've sharpened/replaced all knives, so this is no longer an issue. Since I have original vintage Fiestaware plates in this apartment, a couple have cracks. But there are many plates and if its an issue, those couple plates may be easily avoided.

- Clothing storage cabinets above the bed could use some organizing totes
Those are the original 120 year old empty cabinets which provide additional storage. I purposely keep them empty to accommodate any type of storage needs. There are also two other high storage cabinets and a step ladder for even more storage.

- Bathroom vanity a bit small and rickety
Thanks for pointing this out. It works perfectly and holds the hairdryer and other items and provides light for the bathroom. But I am continually upgrading all four units, and I will put that on my upgrade list!

Please return for your anniversary and try out one of the other 3 units!

From the Owner

This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.

From the Owner

The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park. I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
