House, 11 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 7 Baths, (Sleeps 23)

The Captain Morse House, at the corner of Morse and North Water streets, is one of Edgartown's finest homes. This exquisitely detailed home is perfect for your dream vineyard vacation.

The home features eleven bedrooms and seven baths on three floors, a formal living room and dining room, two family room/game rooms, and two new gourmet kitchens all tastefully decorated with period furnishings and artwork. The home has new central air-conditioning, heat and hot water systems and appliances.

Outside on the North Water side facing the water are two spacious porches with partial water views of Edgartown Harbor. There is a large dock at the end of Morse Street that you can walk out on. Our backyard is one of the most spacious and safe in town and features a bricked patio with seating for ten with a barbecue, croquet and an outdoor shower. There is off street parking for three to four cars. Current accommodations are for up to 23 people in 18 beds.

We are committed to doing whatever we can to make your stay in our family home on Martha's Vineyard a special one. We think that our house is the best in town and offers any visitor a truly unique and authentic island experience. Judging from our sellouts during our first two years on the market our guests agree.

About the Owner

I grew up in the home you are viewing and spent my summers there until I graduated from college. The home was purchased by my father the year I was born and was used by him and my mother until 2008.

Prior to managing this property I owned and ran Island Sports from 1974 until 2007 with my wife Nancy. I am now a Realtor in Southern Florida with Corcoran Group.

It is quite a home and I am proud to be able to share it with you.

A Wonderful Place to Visit and a Great Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5
My family and I (11 total) had a marvelous stay at the Captain Morse House. Its historic charm, perfect setting and gracious hosts made this a week to remember. We still talk about the Vineyard and share fond memories, but they almost all end with our fantastic accommodations! I highly recommend it for your visit as Platt and his wife were terrific to deal with and fun getting to know!

Best family vacation EVER

  • 5 of 5
We picked Captain Morse House because it could hold all 15 of us and I'm so glad we did. It is a very interesting rambling house with an amazing yard and location. The children loved picking out their rooms and it was big enough that we weren't tripping over each other. We played bocci ball, barbequed, walked to a wonderful place each morning for coffee and muffins and back in the afternoon for ice cream. We went to the beach, watched World Cup both at the house and a terrific seafood restaurant and the children loved the back yard. Everything is a short walk and the town is picture perfect.
Before our arrival the owner sent an e-mail so that we had all the schedules for ferries and phone number for crib rentals. I knew nothing about the area and he was very patient with me and made sure I got all the information I needed.
It was a great week and it created some wonderful memories. My four year old granddaughter was very sad this morning that she was home and couldn't go back to the big house where we could all live together.
Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Team Sail Away Retreat

  • 5 of 5
We had a business retreat with 18 women at the Capt Morse Home. We could not have asked for a better setting to hold this retreat. The theme of our retreat was to simplify our businesses and focus on the basics!! This was truly the best setting for that. All of our attendees thoroughly enjoyed their stay! The house was beautiful and clean and provided everything we could possibly need! Everyone was comfortable and loved that we were within walking distance of all shops, dining and sight-seeing. This house is beautiful!!!

Terrific house!

  • 5 of 5
We went to the Vineyard to celebrate our daughter's college graduation with her friends and our sons. Great house for this large group! We used every bit of it- big, family dinners in the dining room, games in the family room, a cocktail party in the living room, a clambake on the lawn, coffee on the porch. Plenty of bathrooms for a big crowd. The kitchens were totally equipped for anything you'd want to make or serve. The closet full of beach towels and shed full of bikes were something I've never seen in another rental and wonderful to have. Loved our week here and look forward to revisiting. The kids definitely want to make it an Annual!

Location

From the Owner

I suppose this is simply fate. Back in 1955 my parents purchased the Captain Morse House and I then spent every summer there until I moved to Newport Rhode Island in 1979. I continued to visit my parents each summer until they passed away. I now spend as much time as I can on island attending to the house and maintaining it. When it was built in 1840 it was perhaps the best home in Edgartown. Now movie stars and celebrities have built larger homes but non with the style and class of the Captain Morse House. Our guests aren't clients so much as they are friends assisting us in maintaining the property and keeping it in our family for future generations.

Amenities

From the Owner

A perfect location. You are right up from the harbor and close to downtown without being in the crowds of summer visitors. I love walking down Morse Street to the boatyard each morning and evening to see what's happening on the waterfront and to talk to the boaters and fisherman. The restaurants and shops are all an easy walk away but it is the waterfront that is the best part of living at the Captain Morse House. After all - it is a whaling Captain's home
