5 Unique Christmas Destinations

Redefine what it means to have a memorable Christmas vacation this year by visiting one of these five unique Christmas destinations.

Hong Kong Christmas Destination

1. Hong Kong

The Chinese are quite enthusiastic about Christmas and folks in Hong Kong are no exception. The city proudly offers up Winterfest, complete with an illuminated tree and carolers, and church services for Christian residents and guests. Lan Khoong, the Santa Claus of the Far East, may even stop by your Hong Kong vacation rental with his seven reindeer! Disneyland Hong Kong has plenty of cheer-inducing rides and events to keep you occupied this time of year, as well. It’s hard to feel too homesick here.

2. Nashville

Nashville takes the months of November and December very seriously, loading them up with a slew of holiday-themed events and bashes. The Opryland Hotel hosts “A Country Christmas,” which includes spectacular lights and a New York City import – the Radio City Rockettes. Can’t imagine winter without snow? You don’t have to at the Adventure Science Center’s indoor snowstorm, the “Winter Wonders” exhibit. As Christmas Eve rolls around, shoppers who procrastinated on Christmas gifts need not worry; Nashville malls understand and they’re open late. In order to feel at home on the holidays, book a Nashville vacation home rental.

3. Rome

Christmas is not the best time to “see the sights” in Italy because most of them are closed. Instead, save your museum tours for the next day when the city, along with its public transportation system, is up-and-running. However, there’s plenty to see and do when the main attractions shut down, so don’t hesitate to plan a winter vacation in Rome. The piazzas are abuzz with Italian families thrilled to spend their favorite holiday together, and shops and streets are elegantly decorated. The lively Christmas Market sums up Rome’s attitude about the season well, with toys for sale and life-size nativity scenes on display. But perhaps the best memory you'll have of Christmas in Rome is attending one of the city’s world-renowned religious ceremonies, like St. Peter’s Midnight Mass.

4. Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas Christmas Destination

The people here are almost as warm as the Baja sun and they’ll wish you a Feliz Compleaños when you come to visit. If you don’t mind lighted palm trees and scuba dives instead of evergreens and snowball fights, Cabo San Lucas is an inspired Christmas destination. In Cabo, fish for marlin, shop until you drop in the Paraiso Mall, tee off along the ocean, and catch some rays on the beach. If you hang around until January, you just might spot a whale on the horizon! Choose from more than one hundred Cabo San Lucas vacation rentals for your stay.

5.  Puerto Rico

Christmas isn’t just a few celebratory days in Puerto Rico. The festivities last from early December to Three Kings Day on January 6th (when children lure the camels of the three wise men with hay, in exchange for gifts). The caroling is exuberant and often accompanied by bongos and maracas. The food includes unique entrees and deserts like coquito, a coconut milk drink; pasteles, a beloved tamale dish; and seasoned rice. Traditionally, Puerto Ricans are a mix of religious and secular folk, so no one’s left out of the fun.
