Garrison Family’s Easter Egg Hunt

When? Easter Sunday
Where? Homer, Georgia
How Much? Free!

More than 50 years ago, Oscar Garrison thanked the employees of his lumber company with a vast Easter egg hunt that spread 10 acres. It quickly turned into a hometown tradition and although the Garrison Family’s Easter Egg Hunt is no longer the world’s largest, it's the longest running. Several thousand little ones come to the rural town of Homer in search of 100,000 candy-filled eggs, some of which will earn them prizes, like baskets, stuffed bunnies, and real bunnies. The event will be MIA for 2010, however.

White House Easter Egg Roll

When? Easter Monday
Where? Washington, DC
How Much? Free! (See details below)

Well, it’s not an egg hunt, but it is the most famous egg roll in the nation and deserves a notable mention here. President Rutherford B. Hayes began the tradition on the White House lawn and ever since, families have gathered at the Capitol for the egg roll (a race where kids spoon their eggs to the finish line), as well as arts and crafts, magic shows, face painting, and storytelling by cabinet members, athletes, and other notable figures. The National Park Service will distribute tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion the day of the event. Any group is allowed entrance, as long as it has at least one child under the age of 7 and no more than 2 adults. Thanks to events like these, DC rentals are a good pick for the Easter holiday.
