New Year’s Eve in Times Square represents the ideal celebration for many people, but the recession has forced some to look for cheap New Years Eve vacations. That’s a good thing because there are many other wonderful ways to ring in the New Year across the country besides a trip to New York.

If you want to save money on travel and lodging, choose a celebration that is close to home or plan to stay with friends or relatives if you can. Almost every town in every state has a celebration to ring in the New Year and there are probably several within driving distance of your home. If you do decide to travel for the holiday, booking everything as early as possible will save money—sometimes a lot of money. To save the most and still have a great time, get on the Internet and plan ahead. Americans love to ring in the New Year and there are so many celebrations, it’s hard to choose just one. Orlando, Florida

For those on the east coast, cheap New Years Eve vacations don't get much more fun than Orlando. No matter where you go, the city seems to take on an air of happy celebration. If you live close enough to drive to them, all of the theme parks—Disney World, Universal Studios and the Epcot Center—put on big and beautiful fireworks displays that will make for an economical holiday. Away from the theme parks, there are other celebrations in Orlando like Kissimmee’s Old Town parade, Nick Hotel’s Slime Drop (get slimed to ring in the new year) and Sea World, which puts on one of the best New Year’s celebrations available anywhere.

Richmond, Virginia

Richmond offers several wonderful ways to spend the last day of the year, from winter activities to indoor swimming, shopping and touring holiday decorated neighborhoods. Carytown, a nine block neighborhood in downtown Richmond, hosts a party complete with lots of live music, a beer garden and a ball rising to the top of the Byrd Theater at midnight—with plenty of fireworks too. For views of the ocean, base your trip in Norfolk or Virginia Beach.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas offers more than casinos and gambling on New Year’s Eve. Lights, decorations, entertainment and fireworks make for the perfect holiday. During New Year’s Eve the strip is filled to capacity, so if you like to celebrate by rubbing elbows with other happy people, this is the place to be. You can probably fit in a few rounds on the slot machines or take in one of the celebrity shows while waiting for midnight—and the huge fireworks display—to arrive.


Spend the last day of the year sipping Starbucks coffee, visiting farmers' markets and museums and strolling around the gaily lit downtown streets. The temperate weather in this city means you probably won’t have to worry about snow. At midnight watch thousands of fireworks shoot from the 650-foot tall Space Needle. Seattle’s celebration is becoming one of the most watched in the nation and gets bigger and better every year.

San Diego

San Diego offers several wonderful and family friendly ways to ring in the New Year, including a First Night celebration in Escondido. First Night celebrations, celebrations of community and art, are springing up across the country and Escondido has one of the biggest. There is music on 12 stages, dancing, vendors offering food sample from some of the area’s top restaurants and two fireworks display—a Chinese Dragon parade and the big Extravaganza at midnight.
